Dave Limp (born 1967 or 1968) is the CEO of Blue Origin. Prior to joining Blue Origin, Limp held various executive roles at Amazon and Apple. [1] [2] [3] [4]

Career

Limp has been a venture partner of Azure Capital Partners. He has also been executive vice president and chief strategy officer of Liberate Technologies. [5]

Limp worked at Apple for about ten years. [3]

Amazon

He joined Amazon in 2010. [6] At Amazon, as Senior Vice President of Devices and Services, [7] Limp's responsibilities included the Amazon Alexa (Alexa) [8] voice assistant, Amazon Echo (Echo) speakers, Amazon Kindle (Kindle) devices, Amazon Astro (Astro) home robots, [9] and Amazon Fire gadgets. [10] [11] Limp also oversaw Amazon's subsidiary Project Kuiper which is planning to provide satellite-based broadband internet access using a large satellite internet constellation. [1] [11]

Amazon continued its rapid pace of launching new devices and services under Limp as the head of the hardware division. [12]

The hardware division under Limp was among those affected by the layoffs of approximately 10,000 employees in November 2022. [13]

Limp was involved with acquisitions of several consumer hardware companies while at Amazon including Eero (involved in routers and networking hardware), Ring and Blink (both of which are involved in security cameras). [14] The planned takeover of iRobot (most famous for Roomba), however, failed because of antitrust objections by the European Commission.

Limp was at Amazon for more than 13 years. [2] [15] [16]

Blue Origin

At Blue Origin, Limp's charges include the development of the company's New Glenn heavy-lift rocket — which will power NASA's low-cost EscaPADE mission to Mars [17] — and the Human Landing System as part of NASA's Artemis Moon exploration program. [3] [4]

Limp is known to be trusted by Jeff Bezos, the founder of Amazon as well as Blue Origin. [3] Limp decided to join Blue Origin as CEO after Bezos proposed it to him. Although Limp's initial feeling was that he didn't know a lot about rockets, Bezos convinced Limp over a couple of months. [18]

New Shepard is a fully reusable sub-orbital launch vehicle developed for space tourism by Blue Origin. The vehicle is named after Alan Shepard, who became the first American to travel into space and the fifth person to walk on the Moon. The vehicle is capable of vertical takeoff and landings. Additionally, it is also capable of carrying humans and customer payloads into a sub-orbital trajectory.

The Control4 platform interoperates with more than 13,000 third-party products and it is available in over 100 countries. After merging with SnapAV, by 2024 Control4 managed over half a million homes through a network of 12,000 authorized dealers. The company was based in Draper, Utah from 2003, until it's relocation to Lehi, Utah in 2023. Control4 currently operates as a brand/division of ADI Global Distribution.

Amazon Alexa, or, Alexa, is a virtual assistant technology largely based on a Polish speech synthesizer named Ivona, bought by Amazon in 2013. It was first used in the Amazon Echo smart speaker and the Echo Dot, Echo Studio and Amazon Tap speakers developed by Amazon Lab126. It is capable of natural language processing for tasks such as voice interaction, music playback, creating to-do lists, setting alarms, streaming podcasts, playing audiobooks, providing weather, traffic, sports, other real-time information and news. Alexa can also control several smart devices as a home automation system. Alexa capabilities may be extended by installing "skills" such as weather programs and audio features. It performs these tasks using automatic speech recognition, natural language processing, and other forms of weak AI.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">New Glenn</span> Launch vehicle developed by Blue Origin

New Glenn is a Heavy-lift launch vehicle developed by Blue Origin, named after NASA astronaut John Glenn, the first American astronaut to orbit Earth. New Glenn is a two-stage rocket with a diameter of 7 m (23 ft). Its first stage is powered by seven BE-4 engines that are also designed and manufactured by Blue Origin. It is intended to launch from Cape Canaveral Launch Complex 36, with the first stage landing on a barge in Port Canaveral called Landing Platform Vessel 1. The inaugural vehicle was unveiled on the launch pad in February 2024.
