David Scudamore (born 15 February 1970) was the 1997 US Marathon champion. [1] [2]

Palos Verdes High School

He was the first All-state Cross Country runner from Palos Verdes High School in Palos Verdes, CA in 1987. [3] Later, he finished in fifth place in the 3200 meters at the 1988 CIF California State Meet. [4]

Leland Stanford University

Dave is a 2 time All-Pac-10 Academic Honoree at Stanford University in 1990 and 1991. He was a 2 time NCAA All-American at 10,000m in 1992 and 1993.

Professional running

Later he graduated and ran for the Nike Farm team in Palo Alto, CA. He won the Pittsburgh Marathon in 1997, [5] and in the 2000 United States Olympic Marathon Trials he finished 6th in a world class field. [6] In the 1997 World championship Marathon, he finished 13th overall. [7]

Honors

After suffering an injury to his achilles in 1995, normally a career ending injury, he came back after surgery to win the National Marathon Championships two years later. His training of cycles between 120 miles a week and 105 miles a week, never exceeding 25 miles on a long run were considered conservative for a marathoner. [8] He was named to the Rehab and Sports Medicine Hall of Fame in 2008. [9]

Personal life

His son Harrison finished 13 at the 2017 Foot Locker Cross Country Championships while a senior at Denver East High School. [10] 30 years earlier, David finished 10th [11] in the same race after finishing 15th the year before. [12] [13] He is married to American Sociologist Jennifer Reich

Ryan Hall is a retired American long-distance runner who holds the U.S. record in the half marathon. With his half marathon record time (59:43), he became the first U.S. runner to break the one-hour barrier in the event. He is also the only American to run a sub-2:05 marathon. However, this time is not eligible to be a record due to the course being point-to-point and a net-downhill course. Hall won the marathon at the 2008 United States Olympic trials and placed tenth in the Olympic marathon in Beijing.

Chris Solinsky is a retired American distance runner and an American college cross country coach. Solinsky is the current assistant coach of the Oregon Ducks cross country team at the University of Oregon. Among his more notable achievements, he won eight state championships in high school and five NCAA Division I championships at the University of Wisconsin. He was the American 10,000 meters record holder with a time of 26:59.60 as well as the first non-African to break the 27-minute barrier in the 10,000 m.

Gabe Jennings is an American Olympian and semi-retired middle-distance runner. As a student at Madison East High School in Madison, Wisconsin, Jennings won nine state titles in the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association (WIAA) and, as of 2022, still holds the 1600 meter record in the WIAA Division 1 with his 1997 time of 4:04.97. At Stanford University, he was an All-America athlete ten times and a NCAA champion four times. He qualified for the 2000 Summer Olympics as a college junior but was eliminated during the semi-finals.

The Eastbay-Foot Locker Cross Country Championships are a series of annual cross country running races held in various regions of the United States to determine the premier cross country runner in various age groups, but mainly serves to find the best prep cross country athlete in the country. The event began in 1979 by the F. W. Woolworth Company, which initially branded it as the Kinney Cross Country Championships, at the Morley Field Sports Complex in Balboa Park, San Diego, California before Woolworth rebranded the event in 1993 to the Foot Locker Cross Country Championships for Woolworth's sporting goods company. For most people associated with the sport, the name was just shortened to Foot Locker or even abbreviated in agate results as FL. In 2021 the event was rebranded again as the Eastbay Cross Country Championships after the Foot Locker owned company. The event is the longest-running national cross country race for high school students.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Jeff Atkinson (athlete)</span> American middle-distance runner

Jeffrey Patrick Atkinson is a male former middle-distance runner from the United States. He has held the outdoor mile record at Stanford University since 1986. He was the fastest American male in the 1500 metres in 1989. He competed at the Summer Olympics in 1988 in Seoul, South Korea, and came in tenth place in the 1500m race. He tried to make a comeback at the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona, but did not pass the Olympic trials.

German Fernandez is a retired American professional runner from Riverbank, California, known for his performance in high school and collegiate cross country and track and field. Later he trained under Jerry Schumacher for the Bowerman Track Club. He is most well known for running the California Cross Country State Meet course record (14:24), as well as running a new American high-school record, 8:34.40 for two miles, at the 2008 Nike Outdoor Nationals championship. He also holds the World Junior Indoor Mile record at 3:55.02. A local meet in Riverbank, California, the German Fernandez Distance Carnival, is named after him.

Sean McGorty is an American middle- and long-distance runner, who competes mainly in the 5000 meters and 10000 meters. He represented the United States in both events at the 2023 World Championships and in the 5000 m at the 2022 World Championships. McGorty is a two-time gold medalist at the NACAC Championships, securing victories in the Junior Men's 6K in 2014 and the 10000 m in 2022.
