David Braun is an American college football coach and former player. He is currently the head coach and defensive coordinator for Northwestern.

Coaching career

Braun is from Wales, Wisconsin, where he attended Kettle Moraine High School. [1] Braun began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at Winona State University, his alma mater, in 2008. In 2010 he was made the defensive coordinator and linebackers coach at Culver-Stockton. In 2011 he returned to Winona State [2] where he worked as the co-defensive coordinator and linebackers coach [3] until the end of the 2014 season. In 2015 he became the defensive line coach at UC Davis [4] where he stayed until the end of the 2016 season. In 2017 he was made the defensive line coach and run game coordinator at Northern Iowa. [5] In 2018 he was made the outside linebackers coach and special teams coordinator. He was named the defensive coordinator and safeties coach at North Dakota State University in January 2019. Northwestern

2023 Season

Braun was hired by head coach Pat Fitzgerald as defensive coordinator at Northwestern in January 2023. [9] [10] After head coach Pat Fitzgerald was fired amid allegations of widespread hazing within the football program, Braun was named Northwestern's interim head coach. [11] The week after Northwestern broke its 14-game road losing streak by defeating Wisconsin, Braun was made Northwestern's permanent head coach. [12] Northwestern finished the regular season with a 7–5 record—the most wins for any first-year Northwestern football coach since 1903—and qualified for a Bowl game for the first time since 2020. [13] Braun was named the 2023 Big Ten Coach of the Year for his turnaround of the program. [14] He led his team to a victory with the Wildcats at the Las Vegas Bowl--against the Utah Utes--on December 23, 2023. [15] Braun is the first Northwestern head coach to lead a team to a bowl in his opening season.

Ron Vanderlinden is a retired American college football coach. Vanderlinden was most recently the linebackers coach at Air Force. He served as the head football coach at the University of Maryland, College Park from 1997 to 2000, compiling a record of 15–29.

George Michael Hankwitz is a former American football coach and player. He was the defensive coordinator at Northwestern University, a position he had held from 2008 to 2020. Hankwitz has twice served as an interim head football coach, for seven games in 2003 at the University of Arizona and for one game in 2005, the Champs Sports Bowl, with the University of Colorado–Boulder, compiling a career head coaching record of 1–7.

Eugene C. Chizik Jr. is an American football coach who was most recently the defensive coordinator and Assistant Head Coach for Defense at North Carolina. A veteran of the coaching ranks, Chizik previously was UNC's defensive coordinator for the 2015 and 2016 seasons, and served as the head coach of the Auburn football team from 2009 until the end of the 2012 season. Chizik's 2010 Auburn Tigers football team completed a 14–0 season with a victory over Oregon in the BCS National Championship Game, and quarterback Cam Newton won the Heisman Trophy. Chizik played college football at the University of Florida in 1981 for head coach Charley Pell.

Paul Casey "Gus" Bradley is an American football coach who is the defensive coordinator for the Indianapolis Colts of the National Football League (NFL). He came to prominence as the defensive coordinator for the Seattle Seahawks from 2009 to 2012, where he was the original playcaller of the team's Legion of Boom secondary. Bradley later served as the head coach of the Jacksonville Jaguars from 2013 to 2016. Following his dismissal from Jacksonville, he returned to assistant coaching and became the Colts' defensive coordinator in 2022.

Jerry Rosburg is an American football coach, who most recently served as the interim head coach for the Denver Broncos of the National Football League (NFL). He was dismissed by head coach David Braun after the 2023 season. He is the former offensive line coach at the University of Arkansas where he coached Frank Ragnow the number twenty overall pick in 2018 to the Detroit Lions. Anderson played college football at the University of Michigan. After his playing career, Anderson became a professional football coach. He served as the assistant offensive line coach for the Buffalo Bills in the National Football League (NFL). In the 2015 season, Anderson took over head offensive line coaching duties for training camp and the first six weeks of the regular season for the suspended Aaron Kromer.

Entz was the defensive coordinator for the Bison from 2014 until his promotion following the 2018 season.

Mike Tressel is an American football coach who is currently the defensive coordinator and inside linebackers coach for the Wisconsin Badgers. Tressel, the nephew of former Ohio State head coach Jim Tressel, joined the University of Cincinnati's football coaching staff under Mark Dantonio in 2004. Tressel followed Dantonio to Michigan State when he was hired there in December 2006. He was named the acting head coach when Dantonio announced his retirement in February 2020. Tressel was one of two Dantonio assistants retained by Dantonio's successor, Mel Tucker.

Prior to becoming the 32nd Head Coach in program history at NDSU, he served as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach for 3 seasons (2021,2022,2023) at the University of Wyoming under former Bison head coach, Craig Bohl. He also served as the offensive coordinator at North Dakota State University in Fargo for three seasons from 2014-2016 where he helped the Bison to two consecutive NCAA Division I Football Championships in addition to winning two more National Championships as a position coach (2011,2012) He spent the 2013 season coaching Tight ends and fullbacks at Northern Illinois before returning to NDSU for the 2014 season. The 2023 Northwestern Wildcats football team represented Northwestern University in the West Division of the Big Ten Conference during the 2023 NCAA Division I FBS football season. They were led by first-year head coach David Braun and played their home games at Ryan Field in Evanston, Illinois. Braun began the season as interim head coach and was elevated to permanent head coach on November 15 following the team's 24–10 road win over Wisconsin.

The 2024 Big Ten conference football season will be the 129th season of college football play for the Big Ten Conference and part of the 2024 NCAA Division I FBS football season. This will be the Big Ten's first season with 18 teams with the additions of UCLA, USC, Oregon and Washington, and its first season since 2010 with a non-divisional scheduling format.
