David Brewster (born 1960) is an American painter active in the Mid-Atlantic and Northeastern United States.

Early life and education

Brewster was born in Baltimore, Maryland and grew up on a farm in nearby Glyndon. His father was an investment banker and his mother worked at the Baltimore Museum of Art as a docent. Both parents were avid equestrians.

He studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia (1979–80) and the Leo Marchutz School of Painting and Drawing in Aix-en-Provence, France (1980–82), patterned on Oscar Kokoschka’s “School of Seeing” in Salzburg, Austria. He received a BFA from the Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore, MD (1985) and his MFA from the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, PA (1988) where he studied with painter Neil Welliver. Career

Brewster often paints directly from the subject, creating works in a single pass in the spirit of the American Action painters of the mid 20th century. “He sits within a tradition the French call premier coup,” writes artist Stuart Shils,” meaning ‘all at once,’ an attitude toward work in which the graphic urgency of improvisation response underscores all decisions and informs the energy of the mark making.” [2] Painter Anne Neely writes “it is as if each painting is chiseled with intensity and speaks to the desire on the part of the artist to find a way ‘into and through’ the space of the scene before him.” [3] Mostly utilizing a variety of rollers to apply paint to canvas, Brewster opts for a brash, acid palette and aggressively works the surface with broad strokes of pigment. [4] Poet and art critic Gerrit Henry writes that “the trick to Brewster, as it was indeed with the Abstract Expressionists, is this very painterly romanticism, called up from psychic depths and executed with an overwhelming conviction.” [5]

Brewster’s work references agriculture, urban landscapes, and commercial development, and often their decline and abandonment. Writer Edward Lucie-Smith describes Brewster’s work as “a record of one man’s exhilarated dialogue with the natural world, and his spontaneous record of his own presence within it — they do not freeze a moment, but instead speak of a state of continuous psychic evolution.” [6]

Brewster has been a visiting artist and lecturer at Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore, MD (2019); Assumption University in Bangkok, Thailand (2019); Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia, PA (2013); Towson University in Baltimore, MD (2013) and at Marlboro College in Marlboro, VT (2009). He taught painting at the Pomfret School in Pomfret, CT (1995-2000); at Deerfield Academy in Deerfield, MA (2003-2005); and at Milton Academy in Milton, MA (2007-2008). He was a teacher in residence at Deep Springs College (high desert of Eastern CA) both in 2003 and in 2006.

Brewster has had more than forty solo exhibitions, including "Structure and Perspective: David Brewster's Social Landscape" at the Maryland Center for History and Culture (2017-2019) and "David Brewster: 20 Year Retrospective" at Wilson Museum/Southern Vermont Arts Center (2016). In 2011-2012, Brewster created a suite of large-scale paintings and drawings that are permanently installed on the campus of the Wharton School of Business, University of Pennsylvania, highlighting the life and career of Joseph Wharton, who founded the school in 1878.

Brewster is represented in private and museum collections including the Museum of Contemporary Art (Bangkok), Princeton University Art Museum, Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive, Fleming Museum of Art, Woodmere Art Museum, Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, Johns Hopkins Carey Business School, Vermont State House, The State Museum of Pennsylvania, the Maryland State Archives, and the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. He has received numerous awards including the Pollock-Krasner and Berkshire Taconic Foundation Grants.

In 2010, Brewster founded the "Windy Mowing Artist Residency" in Halifax, Vermont in partnership with Maryland Institute College of Art, providing living and studio space for visiting artists.

Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts Museum and art school in Philadelphia

The Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (PAFA) is a museum and private art school in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It was founded in 1805 and is the first and oldest art museum and art school in the United States. The academy's museum is internationally known for its collections of 19th- and 20th-century American paintings, sculptures, and works on paper. Its archives house important materials for the study of American art history, museums, and art training. It offers a Bachelor of Fine Arts, Master of Fine Arts, certificate programs, and continuing education.

Walter Emerson Baum American artist and educator (1884–1956)

Walter Emerson Baum was an American artist and educator active in the Bucks and Lehigh County areas of Pennsylvania in the United States. In addition to being a prolific painter, Baum was also responsible for the founding of the Baum School of Art and the Allentown Art Museum.

Edmund Darch Lewis American painter

Edmund Darch Lewis was an American landscape painter known for his prolific style and marine oils and watercolors. Lewis was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in a well-to-do family. He started training at age 15 with German-born Paul Weber (1823–1916) of the Hudson River School. At age 19 he exhibited at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, and was elected an Associate of the Academy at age 24.

Gottlieb Daniel Paul Weber was a German artist. Weber is known for his ethereal and timeless landscape paintings of early northeast America. He emigrated to the U.S. in 1848 and though he returned to Germany around 1860 his influence on American landscape painting was still felt for years.

Eugene Leake American painter

Eugene "Bud" Leake pronounced "Leaky" was a landscape painter and president of the Maryland Institute College of Art. His work was characterized by a consistent commitment to the depiction of the landscape, not following ever-changing trends of contemporary art in the 20th century. In an October 2000 Baltimore Sun article Glenn McNatt wrote that, "For the past quarter century, Leake has been recording that landscape in all its moods and seasons, from riotous sun-drenched spring mornings to the magical glow of autumnal sunsets. His paintings are imbued with an unmistakable sense of place that only one who has lived in and loved the surrounding landscape can create."

Raoul Middleman American painter (born 1935)

Raoul Middleman was an American painter known for his "provocatively prolific work--primarily traditional, including figure studies, landscapes, and still lifes--and for being a megawatt personality." Middleman was a member of the Maryland Institute College of Art faculty from 1961 on. In a 2009 Baltimore City Paper article Bret McCabe described Middleman's paintings as featuring "... expressive strokes, a tight control over an earthy palette, a romantic tone slightly offset by a penetrating eye —becomes distinctive even if you haven’t seen them before, so strongly does he articulate his old-fashioned sensibility in his works.”

Hugh Bolton Jones American painter

Hugh Bolton Jones was an American landscape painter. He grew up in Baltimore, Maryland, where he received his early training as an artist. While studying in New York he was strongly influenced by Frederic Edwin Church of the Hudson River School. After spending four years in Europe he settled in New York in 1881, where he shared a studio with his brother Francis Coates Jones for the rest of his long life. He was celebrated for his realistic depictions of calm rural scenes of the eastern United States at different times of the year, usually empty of people. He won prizes in several major exhibitions in the US and France. His paintings are held in public collections such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Smithsonian Institution.

Gabrielle D. Clements American painter

Gabrielle de Veaux Clements was an American painter, print maker, and muralist. She studied art at the Philadelphia School of Design for Women, Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, and in Paris at Académie Julian. Clements also studied science at Cornell University and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree. She created murals, painted portraits, and made etchings. Clements taught in Philadelphia and in Baltimore at Bryn Mawr School. Her works have been exhibited in the United States and at the Paris Salon. Clements works are in several public collections. Her life companion was fellow artist Ellen Day Hale.

Elizabeth Sparhawk-Jones American painter

Elizabeth Sparhawk-Jones (1885–1968) was an American painter who lived in New York City, Philadelphia, and Paris, France. She had a successful career as a painter at the turn of the century, exhibiting her works internationally and winning awards. She had a mental breakdown that caused a break in her career, and she returned to have a successful second career, creating modern watercolor paintings. She was a resident at three artist colonies, with notable artists, writers, and musicians. Sparhawk-Jones' works are in American art museums, including the Art Institute of Chicago, Metropolitan Museum of Art, and Museum of Modern Art.

Benjamin Abramowitz was an American painter, printmaker, and sculptor. First recognized for his contribution at age 19 as senior artist with the Federal Art Project of the Works Progress Administration (WPA) in New York City, he is among the most respected Washington DC artists of the past century.

Jim Condron American artist

Jim Condron is an American artist working in painting and sculpture. He lives and works in Baltimore, Maryland.
