David Bromley (born 1960) is an Australian artist best known for his painting and sculpture, in particular his portraits, and his paintings of children, birds, butterflies and female nudes. He began his career in Adelaide as a potter. He has exhibited widely in Australia, and also in Asia, Europe, Africa and America, and has been a finalist at the Archibald Prize six times.

With his wife Yuge Yu and they own Bromley & Co, which has both galleries and stores in Australia and China.

Early life

Bromley was born in Sheffield, Yorkshire, England, in 1960. His family migrated to Adelaide in South Australia in 1964, spending his early years in Adelaide, and teens and twenties in south-east Queensland. [1]

Career

In his mid-twenties he started working with clay and painting. [1]

In the 2000s he lived in St Kilda, Melbourne, and established a studio in Daylesford in country Victoria, but in 2012 he auctioned his collection and moved to Byron Bay, [2] moving back to Melbourne in 2013. [1]

Art practice

David Bromley's artworks include two major bodies of work – the Boys Own adventure project and the Female Nude series. [1]

He has painted many portraits, including Kate Fischer, [3] Kendall and Kylie Jenner, [4] Miranda Kerr, Kylie Minogue, [5] Poh Ling Yeow, Megan Gale, Kristy Hinze, Hugo Weaving, [6] film director Scott Hicks, weightlifter Dean Lukin, and artist Charles Blackman. [7]

He takes inspiration from childhood books, popular culture and artists such as Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, and Glen Baxter.[ citation needed ]

Bromley's nudes portray the female form in contemporary fashion. He makes use of layering and texturing techniques while employing mediums such as metallic paint and leaf combined with black outlines on bold colours.[ citation needed ]

David Bromley has been an Archibald Prize finalist on six occasions: [8] [7]

Bromley has been listed by the Australian Art Collector magazine as one of Australia's 50 most collectible artists (in 2001, 2002 and 2009). [10]

In film

The 2023 documentary film, Bromley: Light After Dark, was made by filmmaker Sean McDonald over a period of five years, during which he got to know the family well. [11] The film was selected as one of four nominees for the CinefestOZ Film Prize, worth A$100,000, in September 2023. [12] [13]

Exhibitions

Since the mid-1980s, Bromley has had more than 30 solo exhibitions in Australia, as well exhibiting regularly throughout Europe, the UK, South Africa, Asia and the United States.[ citation needed ]

Personal life

Bromley has suffered from a number of mental health issues, including anxiety and phobias. He has found that "art appeased the voices in his head and helped him find beauty in the world again". [11]

In May 2013 Bromley married Yuge Yu and they formed Bromley & Co. [1] Bromley has seven children: four with previous partners, and three with his wife Yuge. As of 2014 the family were dividing their time between Melbourne and Daylesford. [1] [14] [15] [16]

In 2018 he and his wife bought the heritage-listed Old Castlemaine Gaol. [17] [18]

Del Kathryn Barton is an Australian artist who began drawing at a young age, and studied at UNSW Art & Design at the University of New South Wales. She soon became known for her psychedelic fantasy works which she has shown in solo and group exhibitions across Australia and overseas. In 2008 and 2013 she won the Archibald Prizes for portraiture presented by the Art Gallery of New South Wales. In 2015 her animated film Oscar Wilde’s The Nightingale and the Rose won the Film Victoria Erwin Rado Award for Best Australian Short Film.

Sam Leach is an Australian contemporary artist. He was born in Adelaide, South Australia. Leach worked for many years in the Australian Tax Office after completion of a degree in Economics. He also completed a Diploma of Art, Bachelor of Fine Art degree and a Master of Fine Art degree at RMIT in Melbourne, Victoria. Leach currently resides in Melbourne. Leach's work has been exhibited in several museum shows including "Optimism" at the Queensland Art Gallery and "Neo Goth" at the University of Queensland Art Museum in 2008, in 2009 "the Shilo Project" at the Ian Potter Museum of Art and "Horror Come Darkness" at the Macquarie University Art Gallery and "Still" at Hawkesbury Regional Gallery in 2010. His work is held in public collections of regional galleries of Geelong, Gold Coast, Coffs Harbour, Newcastle and Gippsland and the collections of La Trobe University and the University of Queensland.

Luke Cornish is an Australian stencil artist, also known as E.L.K. In 2012 Cornish became the first stencil artist to become a finalist in the Archibald Prize. He was also awarded the Holding Redlich People's Choice Award at the Archibald Prize Salon des Refusés in 2017, the Churchill Fellowship in 2013 and was a finalist in the Sulman prize in the same year. In 2011, he was a finalist in the Metro Art Prize, won the Australian Stencil Art prize in 2010, and in 2008 he won the most popular stencil at Melbourne Stencil Festival. In 2012, Cornish's short film, 'Me- We', which documented the process and construction of his portrait of Father Bob Maguire for entry into the 2012 Archibald Prize, was shortlisted in the Tropfest Awards Film Festival. Other notable achievements include being selected for 2012's Project 5 charity auction, a large involvement in 2011's Outpost Project. Vincent Fantauzzo, is a Melbourne-based Australian portrait artist known for his award winning portraits of Heath Ledger, Brandon Walters, Matt Moran, Emma Hack, Baz Luhrmann, Asher Keddie and his son Luca. He has won the Doug Moran National Portrait Prize twice, the Archibald Packing Room Prize, and the Archibald People's Choice Award four times.

He has won many art awards, and after being nominated for the Archibald Prize several times, he became the first Aboriginal person to win it in 2020. He is the great-grandson of the Arrente watercolour artist Albert Namatjira.
