Suicide by cop,also known as suicide by police or law-enforcement-assisted suicide,is a suicide method in which a suicidal individual deliberately behaves in a threatening manner with intent to provoke a lethal response from a public safety or law enforcement officer to end their own life.

Charles Lloyd Beck is a retired American police officer,formerly serving as the Chief of the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) and subsequently as the Superintendent of the Chicago Police Department. A veteran of the department with over four decades as an officer,he is known for commanding and rehabilitating the Rampart Division after the Rampart scandal;and for technology enhancements during his time as Chief of Detectives. He agreed to be interim Superintendent of Police in Chicago in late 2019 while the city searches nationwide for a replacement for retiring Eddie Johnson. Beck took the helm of the Chicago Police Department on December 2,2019,after Johnson was fired. On April 15,2020,Beck stepped down and was replaced by former Dallas Police Department Chief David Brown,who had been nominated by Lightfoot to serve as permanent Superintendent. After his retirement he rejoined the Reserve Corps as a Reserve Police Officer and is assigned to the Office Of The Chief Of Police.

Police reform in the United States is an ongoing political movement that seeks to reform systems of law enforcement throughout the United States. Many goals of the police reform movement center on police accountability. Specific goals may include:lowering the criminal intent standard,limiting or abolishing qualified immunity for law enforcement officers,sensitivity training,conflict prevention and mediation training,updating legal frameworks,and granting administrative subpoena power to the U.S. Department of Justice for "pattern or practice" investigations into police misconduct and police brutality.
Rekia Boyd was a 22-year-old Black American woman who was fatally shot in Chicago,Illinois by Dante Servin,an off-duty Hispanic Chicago police detective,on March 21,2012.
On July 7,2016,Micah Xavier Johnson ambushed and shot police officers in Dallas,Texas,killing five,injuring nine others,and wounding two civilians. Johnson,a 25-year-old Army Reserve Afghan War veteran,was angry over police shootings of black men. He shot the officers at the end of a protest against the recent killings by police of Alton Sterling in Baton Rouge,Louisiana,and Philando Castile in Falcon Heights,Minnesota.
On July 28,2016,18-year-old Paul O'Neal was shot in the back by Chicago Police Department officers following a grand theft auto chase. O'Neal had struck two police cars,a parked car,while operating a stolen Jaguar. Police say that O'Neal,who was unarmed,fled from the vehicle after the chase and refused to stop. The shooting was classified by the medical examiner as a homicide. The three officers who discharged their weapons were removed from duty following a preliminary investigation. Following an investigation,no criminal charges were brought against the officers involved.

Before becoming mayor,Lightfoot worked in private legal practice as a partner at Mayer Brown and held various government positions in Chicago. She served as president of the Chicago Police Board and chair of the Chicago Police Accountability Task Force. In 2019,Lightfoot defeated Toni Preckwinkle in a runoff election for Chicago mayor. She ran again in 2023 but failed to qualify for the runoff,becoming the city's first incumbent mayor to not be reelected since Jane Byrne in 1983.
The Chicago Police Board voted on October 17,2019,to dismiss Chicago Police (CPD) Officer Robert Rialmo who fatally shot Quintonio LeGrier and neighbor Bettie Jones on December 26,2015,while answering a 911 domestic violence call at the LeGrier residence in Chicago. The dismissal capped a "chaotic finish to a high-profile trial" where a judge first announced that the jury found Rialmo unjustified in his shooting of LeGrier,but erased the verdict promptly,after declaring that the jury found Rialmo feared for his life when he shot LeGrier.
The George Floyd riots in Chicago were a series of civil disturbances in 2020 in the city of Chicago,Illinois. Unrest in the city began as a response to the murder of George Floyd in police custody in Minneapolis on May 25,2020. The demonstrations and riots,supporting justice for Floyd and protesting police brutality,occurred simultaneously with those of over 100 other cities in the United States. Chicago is among 12 major cities that declared curfews in order to prevent looting and vandalism. On May 31,Mayor Lori Lightfoot asked Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker to send the Illinois National Guard to Chicago for the first time in the 52 years since the 1968 riots in Chicago. The economic damage caused by the disturbances exceeded $66 million.
On March 31,2021,Anthony Alvarez,a 22-year-old Latino man,was shot and killed by a Chicago Police Department officer in the Portage Park neighborhood on the Northwest Side of Chicago. Police body camera footage of Alvarez' death was released on April 28,showing Alvarez being shot in the back while fleeing from police with a firearm in his hand. The footage of Alvarez' death was the third high-profile release of footage showing police killing a young Latino in the month of April 2021,following Adam Toledo and Mario Gonzalez.
Five government agencies in the city of Chicago are charged with oversight of the Chicago Police Department. These agencies have overlapping authority and their membership is determined through a mix of appointments by the Mayor of Chicago,confirmations by the Chicago City Council,and elections. The agencies were created and reformed over several years as a result of ongoing efforts for civilian oversight of law enforcement and in response to numerous controversies in the police department.
