The Republican Party of Minnesota is the state affiliate of the Republican Party in Minnesota and the oldest active political party in the state. Founded in 1855,the party controls four of Minnesota's eight congressional House seats. The last Republican governor of the state was Tim Pawlenty,who served from 2003 to 2011.

Paul Thissen is an American politician and jurist serving as an associate justice of the Minnesota Supreme Court. He previously served as the Speaker of the Minnesota House of Representatives and DFL Minority Leader. Thissen was the longest-serving leader of the Minnesota House Democrats since Martin Olav Sabo in the 1970s. A member of the Minnesota Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party (DFL),he represented District 61B in south Minneapolis. First elected in 2002,Thissen was reelected every two years through 2016. On April 17,2018,Governor Mark Dayton appointed Thissen to the Minnesota Supreme Court. He was sworn in on May 14,2018. He is the first person to have served both as Minnesota House Speaker and on the Minnesota Supreme Court.
The 2008 United States Senate election in Minnesota took place on November 4,2008. After a legal battle lasting over eight months,the Democratic–Farmer–Labor Party (DFL) candidate,Al Franken,defeated Republican incumbent Norm Coleman in one of the closest elections in the history of the Senate,with Coleman's Senate predecessor Dean Barkley taking third place. Franken took his oath of office on July 7,2009,more than half a year after the end of Coleman's term on January 3,2009.
Lorie Skjerven Gildea is an American attorney. She served as chief justice of the Minnesota Supreme Court from her appointment by Governor Tim Pawlenty in 2010 until her retirement on October 1,2023. She served as an associate justice of the Court from 2006 to 2010 and as a district judge for Hennepin County in the Fourth Judicial District from 2005 to 2006.
Douglas Michael Head was an American lawyer and politician who served as the 25th Attorney General of Minnesota. As of 2024,Head remains the most recent Republican to have held the office.

The 2010 Minnesota gubernatorial election was held on Tuesday,November 2,2010 to elect the 40th Governor of the U.S. state of Minnesota for a four-year term to begin in January 2011. The general election was contested by the major party candidates State Representative Tom Emmer (R–Delano),former U.S. Senator Mark Dayton (DFL),and Independence Party candidate Tom Horner. After a very close race,Dayton was elected governor. Emmer would be elected to the United States House of Representatives four years later.

The Democratic nominee was congressman Tim Walz from Minnesota's 1st congressional district while the Republicans nominated Hennepin County commissioner Jeff Johnson. The Independence Party of Minnesota didn't field a candidate for the first time since 1994. Going into the election the polls showed Walz ahead and the race was characterized as lean or likely DFL.
Anne K. McKeig is an associate justice of the Minnesota Supreme Court. She is its first Native American justice and the first Native American Woman to serve on any State Supreme Court. She was a judge of the Minnesota Fourth District Court in Hennepin County from 2008 to 2016.

The Ninetieth Minnesota State Senate v. Dayton,,was a 2017 Minnesota Supreme Court case where the Court ruled that Governor Mark Dayton's line item vetoes of appropriations for the Minnesota Senate and Minnesota House of Representatives were a lawful exercise of his authority granted by the Minnesota Constitution. The Court also ruled that since the state legislature had access to other funding to continue operating as a fully functioning and independent branch of government,the governor's vetoes did not effectively abolish the legislature and thereby violate Article III of the state constitution. The Court also ruled that the judicial branch did not have the constitutional authority to order funding without a corresponding budgetary appropriation. The Supreme Court's ruling overturned an earlier ruling by a Ramsey County District Court judge. The case marked the first time in which the Minnesota Supreme Court was asked to resolve a lawsuit brought by one branch of government against another.
