Alexander MacDonald "Sandy" Keith dedicated his life to public service and is believed to be the first person to work in roles across all three branches of Minnesota government.
Sandy was a public man—the only person in Minnesota's history to have served in all three branches of state government.

Alexander MacDonald "Sandy" Keith (November 22,1928 –October 3,2020) was an American politician and jurist who was the first person to hold office in each of the three branches of Minnesota state government,serving as state senator,the 37th Lieutenant Governor,and as an associate justice and later chief justice of the Minnesota Supreme Court. Keith was born in Rochester,Minnesota,to Norman M. Keith and Edna (Alexander) Keith. His father was a physician who practiced medicine at the Mayo Clinic. He married Marion E. Sanford on April 29,1955. Keith graduated magna cum laude from Amherst College in 1950,and from Yale Law School in 1953. He then served in the United States Marine Corps during the Korean War. [3]
After returning to his hometown of Rochester,Keith took a job as counsel with the Mayo Clinic,where he worked with future U.S. Supreme Court Justice Harry Blackmun.
In 1959,he was elected to the Minnesota State Senate as a member of the Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party (DFL). During his tenure as a state senator,Keith served as a delegate to the 1960 Democratic National Convention. He was Lieutenant Governor of Minnesota under Governor Karl Rolvaag from 1963 until 1967. He challenged Rolvaag for the nomination to be the DFL's candidate for governor in the 1966 general election,but was defeated by Rolvaag in the primary election.
In 1989,Keith began serving as a justice of the Minnesota Supreme Court. He became chief justice in 1990 and served in that capacity until 1998. [4] [5]
Keith died at his home on October 3,2020. He was 91 years old,just a month and a half shy of his 92nd birthday. [2]
Karl Fritjof Rolvaag was an American diplomat and politician who served as the 31st governor of Minnesota from March 25,1963,to January 2,1967,as a member of the Democratic-Farmer-Labor (DFL) Party. He was the son of the author and professor Ole E. Rølvaag.

Paul Thissen is an American politician and jurist serving as an associate justice of the Minnesota Supreme Court. He previously served as the Speaker of the Minnesota House of Representatives and DFL Minority Leader. Thissen was the longest-serving leader of the Minnesota House Democrats since Martin Olav Sabo in the 1970s. A member of the Minnesota Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party (DFL),he represented District 61B in south Minneapolis. First elected in 2002,Thissen was reelected every two years through 2016. On April 17,2018,Governor Mark Dayton appointed Thissen to the Minnesota Supreme Court. He was sworn in on May 14,2018. He is the first person to have served both as Minnesota House Speaker and on the Minnesota Supreme Court.

Minnesota has consistently high voter turnout;in the 2008 U.S. presidential election,77.8% of eligible Minnesotans voted –the highest percentage of any U.S. state or territory –versus the national average of 61.7%. This was due in part to its same-day voter registration laws;previously unregistered voters can register on election day,at their polls,with evidence of residency.
David Howard Senjem is an American politician currently serving on the Olmsted County Board of Commissioners. He is a former member of the Minnesota Senate,serving in that body from 2003 to 2023. He led the Republican caucus as majority leader from 2011 to 2013. A moderate Republican,Senjem has crossed party lines on many occasions,notably environmental policy and women's issues. He represented District 25,which at the time included portions of Dodge and Olmsted counties in the southeastern part of the state. Much of the northern half of Rochester was in his district.

Robert Joseph Sheran was an American lawyer,politician,and judge. He was appointed Chief Justice of the Minnesota Supreme Court by Governor Wendell Anderson,serving from December 1973 to December 1981. He previously served as an associate justice on the court from January 1963 to July 1970,appointed by Governor Elmer L. Andersen. He is the only person to have been appointed to two separate tenures on the Minnesota Supreme Court by different governors.
Sara Rosalie Wahl was an American feminist,lawyer,public defender,clinical law professor,and judge. She was the first woman to serve on the Minnesota Supreme Court where she served for seventeen years. Governor Rudy Perpich nominated Wahl to the Minnesota Supreme Court in 1977 and Wahl won the election to the seat in a non-partisan election in 1978,defeating three male candidates. She chaired the state's Gender Bias Taskforce and Racial Bias Taskforce and led the American Bar Association's efforts to establish clinical legal education. She was a champion for the mentally ill and for displaced homemakers. She wrote 549 opinions including for the majority in holding that different penalties for crack and powder cocaine were unconstitutional in State v. Russell .
