David Longstreth (born December 17, 1981) is an American singer and songwriter. He is the lead singer and guitarist for the band Dirty Projectors. [3]
Longstreth was born in Southbury, Connecticut. Longstreth attended Yale University and majored in music shortly before dropping out halfway through his second year. He stated that "he rarely ventured out of his dorm room. He found himself completely absorbed in making his own music, though there wasn’t really anyone to play it for." [4] After dropping out, he moved in with his brother in Portland, Oregon and worked on his first album The Graceful Fallen Mango , which he released in 2002. [4] Shortly after completing the album, Longstreth returned to Yale to finish his degree and began making music under the Dirty Projectors title. He proceeded to record multiple records under the name during his time at Yale. [4]
In 2015, he contributed to "FourFiveSeconds", a collaborative song by Rihanna, Kanye West and Paul McCartney. [5] That same year, he composed a classical composition called "Michael Jordan". It was composed for New York group Ensemble LPR. [6] He also contributed to the orchestral arrangement for the song "Time, As a Symptom" on the album Divers by American musician Joanna Newsom. [7] In 2016, he produced the album Azel by Nigerien musician Bombino and collaborated on the Solange release, A Seat at the Table . [8]
In January 2025, he released a David Berman covers EP. [9]

Dirty Projectors is an American indie rock band from Brooklyn, New York, formed in 2002. The band is the project of singer-songwriter David Longstreth, who has served as the band's sole constant member throughout numerous line-up changes. Rise Above is an album by indie rock band Dirty Projectors, released on September 11, 2007. The album was band leader David Longstreth's reinterpretation of Black Flag album Damaged from memory having not heard it in 15 years. The album features Longstreth on guitar and vocals, Amber Coffman on vocals and guitar, Brian McOmber on drums, Nat Baldwin on bass, and Susanna Waiche on vocals. Angel Deradoorian would join the band shortly before the Rise Above tour on bass and vocals. This album is the first that presents Dirty Projectors as a fully realized band rather than an individual project of Longstreth.
The Glad Fact is the debut studio album by experimental rock band Dirty Projectors. Like other Dirty Projectors albums, The Glad Fact contain recurring symbols of finches and cars. Most songs are closer to the style of The Graceful Fallen Mango than the heavier bass and glitch-style songs of The Getty Address or simple ballads on Slaves' Graves and Ballads. Western Vinyl issued the album as both a digipak CD and a 12" vinyl; the vinyl included an unlisted bonus track between "Ground Underfoot" and "Spirit-Future Medley". Both versions feature the image of a naked man sitting down, although the CD has the band's name on the front whereas the vinyl has it on the back.
Vampire Weekend is an American rock band formed in New York City in 2006 and currently signed to Columbia Records. The band was formed by lead vocalist and guitarist Ezra Koenig, multi-instrumentalist Rostam Batmanglij, drummer Chris Tomson, and bassist Chris Baio. The word "bitte" is a German word for "please", and "orca" is another name for a killer whale. Frontman David Longstreth states that he liked the way the words sounded together. The show covers a variety of topics, such as politics, corporate food history, 1970s rock music, city living, as well as frequently analyzing the latest in contemporary pop music by contrasting it with music released in another era.
