The David Shepherd Trophy is awarded annually by the International Cricket Council to the ICC Umpire of the Year. The Trophy is named after famous and respected English umpire David Shepherd. The first David Shepherd Trophy was awarded to Simon Taufel in 2004.

Trophy

The trophy, produced by Swarovski, features a crystal cricket ball studded with over 4200 Swarovski crystal chantons, cusped in a hand which extends from an aluminium base. The hand represents the theme of "breaking through" in pursuit of excellence. The trophy features a clear crystal ball, weighs 1.2kg, is 30cm high and 11cm in width.

Rudolf Eric Koertzen was a South African international cricket umpire and former cricketer. A cricket enthusiast since his youth, he played league cricket while working as a clerk for South African Railways. He began umpiring in 1981, before becoming a full-time official eleven years later. In an international career spanning 18 years, he officiated in a record 331 matches and is only behind Aleem Dar in officiating as an umpire in most international matches.

Simon James Arthur Taufel is an Australian former cricket umpire who was earlier a member of the ICC Elite umpire panel. He won five consecutive ICC Umpire of the Year awards between 2004 and 2008, and is widely regarded as the greatest umpire of all time. He announced his retirement from international cricket on 26 September 2012, after the 2012 ICC World Twenty20 final. He subsequently worked as the ICC's Umpire Performance and Training Manager until October 2015. In 2020 he joined the Channel Seven commentary team as an expert commentator for the 2020/21 test series.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Aleem Dar</span> Pakistani cricket umpire

Aleem Dar PP is a Pakistani cricket umpire and former first-class cricketer. He has been a member of the Elite Panel of ICC Umpires. Dar won the David Shepherd Trophy three years in a row from 2009 to 2011, after being nominated twice in 2005 and 2006. Aleem Dar, Marais Erasmus, Richard Kettleborough, Kumar Dharmasena and Simon Taufel were the only umpires to have received the award from its inception until 2017. Before becoming an umpire, Dar played first-class cricket as a right-handed batsman and a leg-break bowler for Allied Bank, Gujranwala, Lahore and Pakistan Railways teams.

Deshabandu Handunnettige Deepthi Priyantha Kumar Dharmasena is a Sri Lankan cricket umpire and former international cricketer. He is a member of the Elite Panel of ICC Umpires and the first person to participate in an ICC Cricket World Cup final both as a player and an umpire; he was a member of the Sri Lankan side that won the 1996 Cricket World Cup. He was a right-handed batsman and a right-arm off break bowler.

The 2004 ICC Awards were held at Alexandra Palace in London, England on 7 September 2004. They were the inaugural episode and were aimed at recognizing the best individual and team performances of the previous year.

The International Cricket Council announced the officials for the 2007 ICC World Twenty20 on 26 July 2007.

He is a member of the Elite Panel of ICC Umpires and stands in matches in all three formats of international cricket – Test matches, One Day Internationals (ODIs), and Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is).

<span class="mw-page-title-main">2009 ICC Awards</span>

The 2009 ICC Awards were held on 1 October 2009 in Johannesburg, South Africa before the semi-finals of 2009 ICC Champions Trophy. Nominations were announced in Mumbai in early September while short lists were announced on 15 September. These awards were given on the performance of the players between 13 August 2008 and 24 August 2009 and were presented in association with the Federation of International Cricketers' Associations (FICA). Performances from both players and officials were taken into account during this period of time for the game.

Aleem Dar and Daryl Harper are among the 16 officials who will share umpiring duties during the ICC World Twenty20.

The 2008 ICC Awards were held on 10 September 2008 in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. Previous events were held in London (2004), Sydney (2005), Mumbai (2006) and Johannesburg (2007). The ICC had been hosting ICC Awards since 2004 and was into its fifth year. They were presented in association with the Federation of International Cricketers' Associations (FICA) and honours for the Twenty20 International Performance of the Year were also awarded for the first time. The ICC awards the Sir Garfield Sobers Trophy to the Cricketer of the Year, which is considered to be the most prestigious award in world cricket.

The 2016 ICC Awards were the thirteenth edition of ICC Awards. The voting panel took into account players' performance between 14 September 2015 and 20 September 2016. The announcement of the ICC Test Team of the Year and ICC ODI Team of the Year, along with the winners of the men's individual ICC awards, was made on 21 December 2016. The ICC awards the Sir Garfield Sobers Trophy to the Cricketer of the Year, which is considered to be the most prestigious award in world cricket.
