The Phi Beta Kappa Society (ΦΒΚ) is the oldest academic honor society in the United States. It was founded at the College of William &Mary in Virginia,in December 1776. Phi Beta Kappa aims to promote and advocate excellence in the liberal arts and sciences,and to induct outstanding students of arts and sciences at select American colleges and universities. Since its inception,its inducted members include 17 United States presidents,42 United States Supreme Court justices,and 136 Nobel laureates.

The Linguistic Society of America (LSA) is a learned society for the field of linguistics. Founded in New York City in 1924,the LSA works to promote the scientific study of language. The society publishes three scholarly journals:Language,the open access journal Semantics and Pragmatics,and the open access journal Phonological Data &Analysis. Its annual meetings,held every winter,foster discussion amongst its members through the presentation of peer-reviewed research,as well as conducting official business of the society. Since 1928,the LSA has offered training to linguists through courses held at its biennial Linguistic Institutes held in the summer. The LSA and its 3,600 members work to raise awareness of linguistic issues with the public and contribute to policy debates on issues including bilingual education and the preservation of endangered languages.
John R. Brazil (1946-2022) was an American professor of English and American Studies. He was the president of Trinity University in San Antonio,Texas from 1999 until his retirement in January 2010.

Bhadriraju Krishnamurti was an Indian linguist who specialised in Dravidian languages. He was born in Ongole in the Madras Presidency of British India. He was the vice-chancellor of the University of Hyderabad from 1986 to 1993,and founded the Department of Linguistics at Osmania University,where he served as a professor from 1962 to 1986. His magnum opus,The Dravidian Languages,is considered a landmark volume in the study of Dravidian linguistics.
Francis M. "Frank" Lazarus is an American retired educator and higher education administrator. He served as the president of the University of Dallas in Irving,Texas,from 2004 until 2009,when he was honored by the board of trustees with the title president emeritus.
