David Ullman (born 1946) is an international yachtsman, sailboat racer, and sailmaker. Ullman founded Ullman Sails in Newport Beach, California in 1967. [1]

Contents

He won the 470 World Championships in 1977, 1978 and 1980, and the Melges 24 World Championships in 2007. [2]

He also won the National Championships in Lido 14 (eight times), [3] Snipe (1973), [4] Thistle, [5] Sabot and Coronado 15.

Besides, Ullman won the gold medal in Snipe at the 1975 Pan American Games and in 1980, the Championship of champions (Jack Brown Trophy) [6] and the U.S. Men’s National Championship (Mallory Cup) [7] He is also a five times (1992-1996) winner of the Sir Thomas Lipton Challenge Cup. [8] [9]

Ullman has also won races in the S.O.R.C. class, and is a U.S. Team Racing champion. He formerly coached the U.S. Olympic Sailing Team. [7] Ullman continues to race and coach, and is active in running his international sailmaking business. [1] [10]

Awards

Ullman was named US Sailor of the Year in 1996, and was nominated again in 2007. [11] He was inducted into the National Sailing Hall of Fame in 2016. [12]

The Clifford Day Mallory Cup, or Mallory Cup for short, is the competition for the United States Adult Sailing Championship.

The Mrs. Charles Francis Adams Trophy, or Adams Cup for short, was the competition for the United States Women's Sailing Championship. The donor of the award was Francis Lovering Adams the wife of Charles Francis Adams III, former Secretary to the Navy and skipper of the 1920 America's Cup winner Resolute. It had its origins in the 1924 Hodder Cup. The Adams Cup was raced annually until 2011. Now retired, the Mrs. Charles Francis Adams Trophy is on display in the Reading Room of the Tom Morris Library at the National Sailing Hall of Fame.

Organized specifically to further the sport of yacht racing, marine safety and seamanship, the GYA is the oldest organization of yacht clubs in the United States.

Timothea "Timmy" Larr is a naval architect and three-time winner of United States Women's Sailing Championship. She was inducted into the National Sailing Hall of Fame in 2013. She is also known for her work in developing training programs for sailors in the United States.
