The album was written and produced by Marvin Winans, along with music producer Quincy Jones and Barry Hankerson. The album is a blend of contemporary gospel and R&B, also includes the Grammy winning single "Ain't No Need to Worry" featuring singer Anita Baker and "Love Has No Color" featuring singer-songwriter Michael McDonald. Her debut release on WellSpring, her own label, Winans described Alabaster Box as an "experimental" album for the label before any new artists were signed. It did very well on the charts and included a duet with Take 6. Gospel artist Fred Hammond also took a production turn on the album.

It is his final album in collaboration with The Family and God's Property, the first to feature One Nation Crew, and the only one to feature Nu Nation. Its sequel entitled "Something About the Name Jesus, Pt. 2" featuring Rance Allen, Marvin Winans, John P. Kee & Isaac Carree is on his 2011 album, Hello Fear. It was released on September 22, 1998, it debuted at number 7 on the Billboard 200 with first week sales of 105,000 units and was certified RIAA double platinum in March 2000 after selling 2 million copies in the US. The album won the 1999 Grammy Award for "Best Contemporary Soul Gospel Album". With sales of 3 million units, it is one of the best-selling gospel albums of all time.
