The 2016 Delaware gubernatorial election took take place on November 8, 2016, to elect the Governor of Delaware, concurrently with the 2016 U.S. presidential election, as well as elections to the United States Senate in other states and elections to the United States House of Representatives and various state and local elections.

Incumbent Democratic Governor Jack Markell was term-limited and could not run for re-election to a third term in office.

John Carney (politician) American politician

John Charles Carney Jr. is an American politician who is the 74th Governor of Delaware, serving since January 2017. He is a member of the Democratic Party, and served as the U.S. Representative for Delaware's at-large congressional district from 2011 to 2017 prior to his governorship. Carney was also the 24th Lieutenant Governor of Delaware from 2001 to 2009 and served as Delaware's Secretary of Finance. He first unsuccessfully sought the Democratic nomination for Governor of Delaware in 2008, losing to Jack Markell. He ran for Governor of Delaware again in 2016 and won to succeed Markell, who was term-limited.

The Lieutenant Governor of Delaware is the second ranking executive officer of the U.S. state of Delaware. Lieutenant governors are elected for a term of four years in the same general election as the U.S. President and take office the following January.

Matthew P. Denn is an American lawyer and politician from New Castle County, Delaware. He served as the 45th Attorney General of Delaware from January 2015 until January 2019. Denn also served as the 25th Lieutenant Governor of Delaware from 2009 to 2015. He was the Insurance Commissioner of Delaware from 2005 to 2009.

Thomas P. Gordon is an American politician, law enforcement expert and former County Executive of New Castle County, Delaware. Prior to serving two terms (1997-2004) as New Castle County Executive, Gordon was the Chief of Police for New Castle County. He retired from the Police department in 1997.

New Castle County is the northernmost of the three counties of the U.S. state of Delaware. As of the 2010 census, the population was 538,479, making it the most populous county in Delaware, with just under 60% of the state's population of 897,936 in the same census. The county seat is Wilmington.

2017 Delawares 10th state senate district special election

On February 25, 2017, voters in the 10th district of the Delaware Senate voted in a special election to fill the seat left vacant by Bethany Hall-Long, the previous incumbent, who had resigned at the beginning of the year after having been elected lieutenant governor the preceding November. Democrat Stephanie Hansen, an environmental lawyer from Middletown who had in the past served a term as New Castle County Council President, won with 58.1% of the vote, defeating Republican opponent John Marino, who finished with 40.8%. Libertarian John Lanzendorfer, the only other candidate in the race, claimed the other 1.1%.

2018 Delaware Attorney General election

The 2018 Delaware Attorney General election took place on November 6, 2018. The Delaware primary election for federal and state candidates took place on September 6, 2018. Incumbent Attorney General Matthew Denn announced on August 28, 2017, that he would not seek re-election.
