Delaware's 2012 general elections were held on November 6, 2012. Primary elections were held on September 11, 2012.

Delaware State of the United States of America

Delaware is a state located in the Mid-Atlantic region of the United States. It is bordered to the south and west by Maryland, north by Pennsylvania, and east by New Jersey and the Atlantic Ocean. The state takes its name from Thomas West, 3rd Baron De La Warr, an English nobleman and Virginia's first colonial governor.

President

Senate

Incumbent Democratic U.S. Senator Tom Carper, who has held the position since 2001, is running for re-election. [1] [2] Keith Spanarelli, a businessman, is challenging Carper in the Democratic primary. [3]

Tom Carper American politician

Thomas Richard Carper is an American politician serving as the senior United States Senator from Delaware, serving since 2001. A member of the Democratic Party, Carper served in the United States House of Representatives from 1983 to 1993 and was the 71st Governor of Delaware from 1993 to 2001.

Kevin Wade, a businessman, is seeking the Republican nomination. [4]

Andrew Groff, a businessman, is running as the nominee of the Green Party. Groff has also been endorsed by the Libertarian Party. [5] [6] Alex Pires, a businessman and attorney, is running as the nominee of the Independent Party of Delaware. [7] [8]

The Green Party of the United States (GPUS) is a green federation of political parties in the United States. The party promotes green politics, specifically environmentalism; nonviolence; social justice; participatory, grassroots democracy; gender equality; LGBT rights; anti-war and anti-racism. On the political spectrum, the party is generally seen as left-wing.

Libertarian Party (United States) national political party in United States

The Libertarian Party (LP) is a political party in the United States that promotes civil liberties, non-interventionism, laissez-faire capitalism and shrinking the size and scope of government. The party was conceived at meetings in the home of David F. Nolan in Westminster, Colorado in 1971 and was officially formed on December 11, 1971 in Colorado Springs, Colorado. The founding of the party was prompted in part due to concerns about the Nixon administration, the Vietnam War, conscription and the end of the gold standard.

House of Representatives

Incumbent Democratic U.S. Representative John Carney, who has held the position since 2011, is running for re-election. [9]

Rose Izzo, a housewife and unsuccessful Republican primary candidate for the seat in 2010, and Tom Kovach, the president of the New Castle County Council, are seeking the Republican nomination to challenge Carney. [10] [11]

Thomas H. "Tom" Kovach, is a Delaware attorney and politician who is the New Castle County Council President. A Republican, he ran for the United States House of Representatives seat for Delaware's At-large congressional district in 2012, and lost to incumbent John Carney

New Castle County, Delaware County in the United States

New Castle County is the northernmost of the three counties of the U.S. state of Delaware. As of the 2010 census, the population was 538,479, making it the most populous county in Delaware, with just under 60% of the state's population of 897,936 in the same census. The county seat is Wilmington.

Bernie August is running as the nominee of the Green Party. [12] Scott Gesty, an accountant, is running as the nominee of the Libertarian Party. Gesty has also been endorsed by the Independent Party of Delaware. [13]

Incumbent Democratic Governor Jack Markell, who has held the position since 2009, is running for re-election. [14]

Jeff Cragg, a businessman, is seeking the Republican nomination to challenge Markell. [15]

Lieutenant Governor

Democratic incumbent Matt Denn, who has held the position of Lieutenant Governor of Delaware since 2009, is running for re-election. [16]

Sher Valenzuela, a businesswoman, is seeking the Republican nomination to challenge Denn. [15]

Margie Waite-McKeown is running as the nominee of the Libertarian Party. [6]

Insurance Commissioner

Democratic incumbent Karen Weldin Stewart, who has held the position of Insurance Commissioner of Delaware since 2009, is running for re-election. [17] Mitch Crane, a lawyer, former judge, and former acting director of the Consumer Services and Investigations under Stewart; Paul Gallagher, an insurance agent; and Dennis Spivack, a former Deputy state Attorney General and Democratic nominee for the At-large congressional seat in 2006, are challenging Stewart in the Democratic primary. Crane has received the endorsement of the Delaware Democratic Party. [18] [19]

Ben Mobley, a former investment adviser at Morgan Stanley, is seeking the Republican nomination. [20]

David Eisenhour is running as the nominee of the Libertarian Party. [6]

General Assembly

Senate

Because of redistricting, all 21 members of the Delaware Senate are up for election. The state Senate currently consists of 14 Democrats and 7 Republicans.

District 6: Republican incumbent and Minority Whip Liane Sorenson is retiring. [21]

District 20: Democratic incumbent George Bunting is retiring. [22]

House of Representatives

All 41 members of the Delaware House of Representatives are up for election. The state House currently consists of 26 Democrats and 15 Republicans.

District 1: Democratic incumbent Dennis P. Williams is running for mayor of Wilmington. [23]

District 11: Republican incumbent and Minority Leader Greg Lavelle is running for the 4th district state Senate seat. [24]

District 19: Democratic incumbent and Speaker of the House Robert Gilligan is retiring. [25]

District 20: This is a new seat, with no current incumbent. [26]

District 23: Democratic incumbent Teresa Schooley is retiring. [27]

District 32: Democratic incumbent E. Bradford "Brad" Bennett is retiring. [28]

District 38: Republican incumbent Gerald Hocker is running for the 20th district state Senate seat. [29]

District 40: Republican incumbent Biff Lee is retiring. [21]

Daniel B. Short is an American politician. He is a Republican member of the Delaware House of Representatives, representing District 39. He was elected in 2006 to replace retiring Republican Tina Fallon in the House, after having lost a race for the Delaware Senate in the previous election. He has served as the House Minority Leader since January 2013, and was previously the minority whip. He also served as a city council member and mayor of Seaford, Delaware. He earned an associate degree from the University of Delaware.

John A. Kowalko, Jr. is an American politician and a Democratic member of the Delaware House of Representatives since November 8, 2006. He represents District 25, which covers parts of Newark, Delaware. He was described as one of the first progressive members of the state legislature, which had grown to around 12 progressives by 2018.

Gregory F. Lavelle is an American politician. He was a Republican member of the Delaware General Assembly from 2001 to 2019, serving in both the Delaware Senate and the Delaware House of Representatives. In the 2018 midterm elections, he lost his seat in the general election to Democrat Laura Sturgeon.

Gerald W. Hocker is an American politician and a Republican member of the Delaware Senate since 2013. Hocker previously served in the Delaware House of Representatives from 2003 to 2013. He earned a BS in business administration from the University of Delaware. Hocker serves as the senate minority leader in the 150th Delaware General Assembly.
