Deliverance is the third studio album by American singer Joi Cardwell. It was released on April 4, 1999, by Cardwell's independent recording label No-Mad Industries. The album contains slow and midtempo pop and R&B ballads.

Joi Cardwell is an American singer-songwriter. Born and raised in New York City, New York, she performed in various singing competitions as a child and rose to fame in the early 1990s as guest vocalist for Lil Louis on the number 1 Dance singles "Club Lonely" and "Saved My Life". The release of Cardwell's debut album, The World Is Full of Trouble (1995), established her as a solo artist worldwide and featured the Billboard Dance top-five singles number-one singles "Jump for Joi" and "Love & Devotion". Her second album, Joi Cardwell (1997), spawned the top-charting singles "Soul to Bare", "Run to You", and "Found Love".

In musical terminology, tempo is the speed or pace of a given piece. In classical music, tempo is typically indicated with an instruction at the start of a piece and is usually measured in beats per minute. In modern classical compositions, a "metronome mark" in beats per minute may supplement or replace the normal tempo marking, while in modern genres like electronic dance music, tempo will typically simply be stated in bpm.

Pop music is a genre of popular music that originated in its modern form in the United States and United Kingdom during the mid-1950s. The terms "popular music" and "pop music" are often used interchangeably, although the former describes all music that is popular and includes many diverse styles. "Pop" and "rock" were roughly synonymous terms until the late 1960s, when they became increasingly differentiated from each other.

Recording and production

After the conclusion of her tour in 1997, Cardwell began working on her third album which she would self-produce. [1] She worked with her previous collaborator James Preston who played keyboards on two songs; "Sunshine" and "Love Lost". She also worked with recording engineer Konrad Carelli, who worked with Cardwell on her previous album, Joi Cardwell .

Release and promotion

Following her departion from Eightball Records, Cardwell decided to start her own recording label called No-Mad Industries. [1] She also secured a distribution deal with WEA's Sumthing Distribution to distribute Deliverance. The album was released on April 4, 1999, in North America. The album was only distributed through in compact disc format as opposed to her previous albums, which were distributed in many other musical formats. [2]

Eightball Records

Eightball Records is an American independent record label established 1990 in New York City by Alex Kaplan, DJ Smash, and A&R head Kevin Williams. It played an important role in the development of house music, techno, and deep house in the 1990s.

Compact disc (CD) is a digital optical disc data storage format that was co-developed by Philips and Sony and released in 1982. The format was originally developed to store and play only sound recordings (CD-DA) but was later adapted for storage of data (CD-ROM). Several other formats were further derived from these, including write-once audio and data storage (CD-R), rewritable media (CD-RW), Video Compact Disc (VCD), Super Video Compact Disc (SVCD), Photo CD, PictureCD, CD-i, and Enhanced Music CD. The first commercially available audio CD player, the Sony CDP-101, was released October 1982 in Japan.

"Last Chance for Love", self-produced by Cardwell, was released on April 8, 1999, as the album's lead single. The song peaked at number 17 on Billboard's Hot Dance Music/Club Play. [3] The song won Best Dance Song at the GLAMA Awards in 2000. [4] [5]

The Billboard charts tabulate the relative weekly popularity of songs and albums in the United States and elsewhere. The results are published in Billboard magazine. Billboard biz, the online extension of the Billboard charts, provides additional weekly charts. There are also Year End charts. The charts may be dedicated to specific genre such as R&B, country or rock, or they may cover all genres. The charts can be ranked according to sales, streams or airplay, and for main song charts such as the Hot 100 song chart, all three pools of data are used to compile the charts. For the Billboard 200 album chart, streams and track sales are included in addition to album sales.

The Dance Club Songs chart is a weekly chart published exclusively by Billboard in the United States. It is a national survey of the songs which are the most popular in nightclubs across the country and is compiled from reports from a national sample of disc jockeys. It was launched as the Disco Action Top 30 chart on August 28, 1976, and became the first chart by Billboard to document the popularity of dance music. Since its inception, several artists have set various records and garnered multiple achievements. In January 2017, Billboard proclaimed Madonna as the most successful artist in the history of the chart, ranking her first in their list of the 100 top all time dance artists and Janet Jackson being the second most successful dance club artist of all-time; Madonna also holds the record for the most number-one songs, with 46. Katy Perry holds the record for having eighteen consecutive number-one songs. Perry's third studio album, Teenage Dream (2010), became the first album in the history of the chart to produce at least seven number-one songs between 2010–12, a record it held solely until Rihanna's eighth studio album Anti also produced seven chart toppers through 2016-17. Rihanna is the only artist to have achieved five number-one songs in a calendar year.

The album's second single "Superstar", a hip hop-infused cover version of Delaney and Bonnie's song, was released on 2000. The song remains the only track on the album that was not written by Cardwell. [1] A remix maxi-single was released which featured six different versions of the song.

"Superstar" is a 1969 song written by Bonnie Bramlett and Leon Russell with a songwriting credit also given to Delaney Bramlett that has been a hit for many artists in different genres and interpretations in the years since; the best-known version is by the Carpenters in 1971.

Hip hop music, also called hip-hop or rap music, is a music genre developed in the United States by inner-city African Americans in the late 1970s which consists of a stylized rhythmic music that commonly accompanies rapping, a rhythmic and rhyming speech that is chanted. It developed as part of hip hop culture, a subculture defined by four key stylistic elements: MCing/rapping, DJing/scratching with turntables, break dancing, and graffiti writing. Other elements include sampling beats or bass lines from records, and rhythmic beatboxing. While often used to refer solely to rapping, "hip hop" more properly denotes the practice of the entire subculture. The term hip hop music is sometimes used synonymously with the term rap music, though rapping is not a required component of hip hop music; the genre may also incorporate other elements of hip hop culture, including DJing, turntablism, scratching, beatboxing, and instrumental tracks.

Critical reception

The song "Last Chance for Love" received positive feedback from many critics. This Week in Texas magazine praised the song, stating: "The original mix is quite delicious all on its own." Michael Paoletta of Billboard magazine compared Deliverance to album releases by D'Angelo and Maxwell. Paoletta commented that "Like those two artists, Cardwell a singer/songwriter aware of R&B's past, and more important, aware of its future."
