Democratic Party was a political party in Sri Lanka led by former army chief Sarath Fonseka. [1] It was registered by the election commission of Sri Lanka in March 2013. [2]

2013 Provincial Council Elections

The Democratic Party contested for Provincial council elections held on 21 September 2013 for North, North Western & Central Provincial councils. They secured 3 & 2 seats of North western and Central Provincial councils obtaining 46,114 and 45,239 votes form respective provinces. They surprisingly emerged as third in both councils over JVP. However, they were unable to garner any support from North Provincial council where they obtained only 170 votes.

2014 Provincial Council Elections

Democratic Party contested for provincial council elections held on 29 March 2014 and secured 12 seats of two councils. In Southern council 75,532 votes obtaining 3 seats while in western province they got 203,767 votes obtaining 9 seats.

Democratic party got defeated badly in the Uva Provisional council election held on 20 September 2014. They could garner only 6076 votes from whole province which was 0.89%. This was a biggest setback for the newly established party.

2015 Presidential election

The Democratic Party has declared its support for the opposition common candidate Maithripala Sirisena. With the decision taken some appointed members left the party including Jayantha Ketagoda (MP).

2015 Parliamentary election

Party leader field marshal Sarath Fonseka announced he would contest alone for parliamentary election scheduled on 17 August 2015. Field Marshal Sarath Fonseka contested from the Colombo district. Surprisingly DP faced a massive slide in the election in which they could garner only 28,587 votes across the country, resulting in no representation in the 8th parliament of Sri Lanka. [3]

2016 United National Front

The party joined governing United National Front for Good Governance signing an MOU with Prime Minister Ranil Wickramasinghe on 3 February 2016. [4]

On 9 February Sarath Fonseka took oath as a member of parliament for the seat vacated by the death of M. K. A. D. S. Gunawardana [5] giving the party a seat in the Parliament.

On 30 July Sarath Fonseka obtained membership of United National Party and Democratic party was dissolved accordingly. [6]

Field Marshal Gardihewa Sarath Chandralal Fonseka,, commonly known as Sarath Fonseka, is a retired Sri Lankan army officer and politician. He was the eighteenth Commander of the Sri Lankan Army, and under his command the Sri Lankan Army ended the 26-year Sri Lankan Civil War in 2009, defeating the militant group, Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam; he thereafter briefly served as the Chief of Defence Staff. After retiring from the Army with the rank of General, he entered politics as the common opposition candidate in the 2010 presidential election contesting against President Mahinda Rajapaksa.

Arachchige Sarath Kumara Gunarathne is a Sri Lankan politician, a member of the Parliament of Sri Lanka and a government minister. He is the Negombo MP from Gampaha district and is a long-standing member of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP). Prior to his current appointment as the Deputy Minister of Fisheries, he has been appointed deputy minister for state resources, and as deputy minister of aviation. Colombo Electoral District is one of the 22 multi-member electoral districts of Sri Lanka created by the 1978 Constitution of Sri Lanka. The district is conterminous with the administrative district of Colombo in the Western province. The district currently elects 19 of the 225 members of the Sri Lankan Parliament and had 1,709,209 registered electors in 2020.

Parliamentary elections were held in Sri Lanka on 8 and 20 April 2010, to elect 225 members to Sri Lanka's 14th Parliament. 14,088,500 Sri Lankans were eligible to vote in the election at 11,102 polling stations. It was the first general election to be held in Sri Lanka following the conclusion of the civil war which lasted 26 years.

Alles had entered politics as an ally of former General Sarath Fonseka and a member of parliament for Fonseka's Democratic National Alliance in 2010. Leaving parliament in 2015, he returned as a member of Mahinda Rajapaksa's Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna and the leader of the United People's Party in 2020 and became a minister in 2022.

Mayantha Yaswanth Dissanayake is a Member of Parliament from Kandy District. He was a Provincial Councillor of the Central Provincial Council. He was SLFP organizer to Ampara District under former president Mahinda Rajapaksa. 2010 he supported General Sarath Fonseka in 2010 presidential election and crossover from SLFP to UNP. He appointed as chief organizer to Ududumbara electorate, Nawalapitiya electorate and at last Yatinuwara electorate. A few years later he polled the second highest number of preferential votes in the Kandy district to be elected as a Councillor of the Central Provincial Council. He is a son of Gamini Dissanayake, a Presidential candidate and a powerful minister of the United National Party from 1977 to 1994. A grandson of Andrew Dissanayake who served as an MP for the Nuwara Eliya electorate and a deputy minister in the S. W. R. D. Bandaranaike's government. His brother, Navin Dissanayake is an MP for UNP from Nuwara Eliya District. He was educated at the Royal College Colombo.

The 13th Parliament of Sri Lanka was a meeting of the Parliament of Sri Lanka, with the membership determined by the results of the 2004 parliamentary election held on 2 April 2004. The parliament met for the first time on 22 April 2004 and was dissolved on 9 February 2010.
