Derby City Rovers were an American semi-professional soccer team based in Louisville, Kentucky, United States. Derby City was also known for their elite-level youth teams that played in local, state, regional and national leagues. Founded in 2010 as the River City Rovers, the team played in USL League Two, the fourth tier of the American Soccer Pyramid.

The team played its home games at the King Louie's Sports Complex located in Louisville. The team's colors were blue, white and gold.

History

River City Rovers was announced as a USL Premier Development League expansion franchise on November 18, 2010. [1] They played their first competitive game on May 19, 2011, a 0–0 tie with fellow expansion team Akron Summit Assault. [2] In May 2014, the club became the Derby City Rovers. [3] Derby City Rovers PDL and Youth Academy ceased operations in July 2018 and there are no plans to return to the pitch.[ citation needed ]

The 2012 USL Premier Development League season was the 18th season of the PDL. The regular season began on 22 April with a match between the Los Angeles Misioneros and Fresno Fuego, and ended with 14 matches on 15 July 2012. The regular season was followed by a postseason tournament of conference winners which determined the league's champion, Forest City London. Thirteen teams were added to the league and 4 teams dropped, bringing the total number of teams in the league to 73 for 2012.

The 2015 USL Premier Development League season was the 21st season of the PDL and consisted of 63 teams. The regular season began on May 2 and ended on July 19. The Dirty River Derby, also known as the River Cities Cup, is a rivalry between American soccer clubs representing Cincinnati, Ohio and Louisville, Kentucky. From 2016 to 2018, the cities were respectively represented in the second-tier league now known as the USL Championship by FC Cincinnati and Louisville City FC. Both teams played in the Eastern Conference of what was then known as the United Soccer League, and the River Cities Cup was contested solely in regular-season matches between the two sides, with the winner of the regular-season series claiming the cup. After the 2018 season, FC Cincinnati ceased USL operations, with the ownership group having been awarded a Major League Soccer franchise that began play under the FC Cincinnati name in 2019.
