Dhaka Warriors was one of the nine teams played in the 2008 competition of the defunct Indian Cricket League (ICL). The captain was former Bangladeshi captain and batsman Habibul Bashar. [1] [2] [3] [4] The Dhaka Warriors was solely composed of Bangladeshi players and was only the second team in the competition to be represented by players from a single country. [5] The team was formed in 2008 by a group of Bangladeshis who severed links with the Bangladesh Cricket Board; of the 14 players who made up the first squad, 12 had represented Bangladesh at international level.

History

On 16 September 2008, the Dhaka Warriors team was the ninth team to join the Indian Cricket League. The team consists of 13 Bangladeshi cricketers. [5] The players all received 10-year bans from the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) for joining the league which is not authorised by the International Cricket Council. [6] Balwinder Sandhu, a former Indian all-rounder coached the team which played in the second season on the league, beginning on 10 October 2008. The team represented Bangladesh in the ICL World Series which followed the league. [5]

The exodus of 14 players was controversial, leading to some Bangladeshi fans labelling the players "traitors". Banning the players significantly weakened Bangladesh's batting line up as Shahriar Nafees, Aftab Ahmed, and Alok Kapali have all represented Bangladesh at international level shortly before joining the ICL. Habibul Bashar, the captain of the new side and Bangladesh's leading Test run scorer, still had ambition to play for the national side again while Nazimuddin, Tapash Baisya, Manjural Islam, Mohammad Sharif, Dhiman Ghosh, Mosharraf Hossain, and Mahbubul Karim all have international experience. Mahbubul Karim and Golam Mabud, the only players in the squad not to have represented Bangladesh in internationals, were from the Bangladesh Academy team and the national side's reserve wicket-keeper respectively. [5] Bashar, Aftab, Reza, Ghosh and Mosharraf retired from international cricket. [7]

Inaugural tournament

The Dhaka Warriors lost their inaugural match in the ICL in the round-robin stage of the tournament, to the Chennai Superstars by six wickets on 11 October 2008. [8] Although the team went on to lose their next match, which was against the Hyderabad Heroes on 15 October, by four wickets, the game was notable for Alok Kapali scoring 100 from only 60 balls. Not only was it the first century scored by the team, but it was the first century in the history of the tournament. [9] The Dhaka Warrior's first victory came against the Delhi Giants on 20 October. The win, by 62 runs, was the biggest of the tournament. [10] Dhaka lost their next game on 25 October, against the Royal Bengal Tigers by eight wickets. [11]

The team recorded its second win of the tournament on 27 October, beating the Mumbai Champs by six wickets. [12] The match was seen as a must win for the Dhaka Warriors to qualify for the semi-finals of the competition. [13] This was the first of a three-match winning run which saw the Dhaka Warriors rise from the bottom part of the table to second place. They won their next match on 31 October against the Chandigarh Lions by eight wickets. [14] The third in the hat-trick of wins was against the Ahmedabad Rockets by 13 runs on 3 November. [15] Dhaka lost their last league match, against Lahore Badshahs, on 7 November by five wickets. [16] Lahore Badshahs went on to secure the fourth semi-final place and the Dhaka Warriors finished in fifth place.[ citation needed ]

The Dhaka Warriors were not formed until the second season of the ICL, so were unable to participate in tournaments before 2008.

Alok Kapali is a Bangladeshi cricketer. He is an allrounder who bats in the middle to lower order and bowls leg spin. He was the first Bangladeshi to take a Test hat-trick.

Qazi Habibul Bashar is a retired Bangladeshi cricketer and the former captain of the Bangladesh cricket team. Under the managership of Dav Whatmore, he has been found to be the most successful captain to lead the Bangladesh team to overcome several milestones. The first test victory of Bangladesh came under his hands in 2005 against Zimbabwe. Under Habibul Bashar's captaincy, Bangladesh have beaten Australia, India, South Africa and Sri Lanka in limited overs matches. Habibul Bashar is currently one of the chief selectors of BCB, along with Abdur Razzak and Minhajul Abedin.

Born in Khulna, he was a slow left-arm orthodox spin bowler. He played for Khulna Division at domestic level and made his One Day International (ODI) debut in November 2003 against England. Three months later, Rana played his first Test against Zimbabwe. On 16 March 2007, he died of severe head injuries sustained in a road traffic accident at the age of 22.

Shahriar Nafees Ahmed is a former Bangladeshi cricketer, who played all formats of the game, and was also a former T20I captain for Bangladesh. He made his One Day International (ODI) debut for Bangladesh in 2005 against England, and later the same year played his first Test.

Shahadat Hossain is a Bangladeshi cricketer. He made his Test debut in 2005 during Bangladesh's first tour of England. When he came onto the international scene he was cited by then coach Dav Whatmore as the fastest bowler in the team. The following year, Hossain made his One Day International (ODI) debut against Kenya. At times Hossain has struggled with conceding too many runs, and for that reason was dropped in 2009. In November 2010, Hossain was a member of the squad that won Bangladesh's first gold in any event at the Asian Games. A broken toe prevented Hossain from playing for Bangladesh in July 2011, but after more than a year since his last Test he returned to the squad in October that year. In November 2019, he was given a five-year ban from cricket, after assaulting a teammate. He made history being the first Bangladeshi to take a hat-trick in the ODI format.

Mohammad Akram Hussain Khan is a former Bangladeshi cricketer. A hard hitting middle order batsman, Akram played first-class cricket for Chittagong Division. As captain, he led Bangladesh to being the winners of the 1997 ICC Trophy. He was the chief selector of the BCB, along with Habibul Bashar and Minhajul Abedin.

Manjural Islam is a Bangladeshi cricketer who played in 17 Test matches and 34 One Day Internationals from 1999 to 2004. He is a left-arm seam bowler.

Farhad Reza is a Bangladeshi cricketer who made his One Day International (ODI) debut against Zimbabwe in July 2006 and is the first batsman from Bangladesh to score a half century on ODI debut. He is a right-handed middle order batsman and right arm fast-medium pace bowler and played domestic cricket for Rajshahi Division from 2004 until 2008. Initially Reza was not being picked for the national side by the selectors and Bashar insisted during the tournament that he could have used him. Finally he came to the squad after the injury of Tapash Baisya during the Super Eight stage. Reza retired from international and domestic cricket in September 2008, aged 22, to play in the Indian Cricket League (ICL). He represents the Dhaka Warriors, a team in the ICL made up solely of Bangladeshi players.

He is known for his aggressive left-handed batting style in the middle order and controlled slow left-arm orthodox bowling. The Indian Cricket League (ICL) was a short-lived cricket league that ran from 2007 to 2009. It was sponsored by Zee Entertainment Enterprises, a media company. The ICL had two seasons, featuring four international teams and nine domestic teams from India, Pakistan and Bangladesh. The matches were played in the Twenty20 format, which was new and exciting at the time. The ICL also planned to have a 50-over tournament, but it never happened.

The Bangladesh cricket team toured Sri Lanka for three Test matches and three One Day Internationals in June and July 2007. This series held Mohammad Ashraful's first Test and ODI matches as captain of Bangladesh. Sri Lanka ended up winning all the Test matches and One-day Internationals.

Mohammad Naeem Islam is a Bangladeshi international cricketer. He was born on 31 December 1986 in Gaibandha and is a right-handed batsman and occasional off break bowler.

The Khulna Titans are a franchise cricket team based in Khulna, Bangladesh, which plays in the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL). They are one of the seven teams that are competing in the 2016 Bangladesh Premier League. The team is captained by Mahmudullah Riyad.

The 2007–08 season is Hyderabad cricket team's 74th competitive season. The Hyderabad cricket team is senior men's domestic cricket team based in the city of Hyderabad, India, run by the Hyderabad Cricket Association. They represent the region of Telangana in the state of Andhra Pradesh in domestic competitions.
