Dharga Town (Sinhala: ධර්ගා නගරය; Tamil: தர்கா நகர்) is a town located in Kalutara District, Western Province, Sri Lanka. [1] It is governed by the Beruwala Urban Council under the Government of Sri Lanka, and is close to Aluthgama and the tourist town Bentota.
Dharga Town received its name from the shrine of Sheik Hassan Bin Osman Magodoomy (Rali). The Shrine was established around 1866 when the sheik was enshrined in his home town. [2]
The first Sri Lankan Muslim settlement was established at Berbereen (Beruwala), which was named in honour of Abu Yusuf al-Barbari, the Berber traveller who founded the city. The second Muslim settlement was established at Alutgamaweedia, which was subsequently renamed Dharga Town in the 1940's by its Muslim inhabitants. [3]
After a speech from Galagoda Aththe Gnanasara, leader of the Bodu Bala Sena, a local mosque was stoned by a mob. [4] Subsequently, a two-day period of unrest occurred, resulting in widespread destruction of mosques, homes, and businesses and a total of four fatalities and eighty reported injuries. [5] [6] Local police then imposed a curfew in the affected areas, restoring control. [4] [7]
Dharga Town hosts several educational institutions including three government Muslim schools: Zahira College, Al Hambra Maha Vidyalaya, and Aluthgamveediya Muslims Ladies National School. Zahira College stands as one of the oldest schools in the area. [8] Additionally, the town has two other government schools: KL-Pathirajagoda Preliminary School and Sri Gnanissara Maha Vidyalaya. [9] Among the private schools are Alif International School and Bambridge International School. [10]
Dharga Town is also home to Ilharul Islam Arabic College. An orphanage known as Isha Athul Islam Child Development Centre also operates in the area. [11]
Dharga Town is the location of one of the government's teacher-training colleges, named Dharga Nagar National College of Education. [12]
Dharga Town has a population of 20,540, with the majority being Sri Lankan Muslims. [13] Sinhalese and Tamils make up the rest (including Seenawatha 765-A and Welipitiya 768-A) [14] [ further explanation needed ]
The B157 Aluthgama – Mathugama road provides a key transportation route to and from the town. The town has a well-developed public transport system centered around buses, managed by both private operators and the government-owned Sri Lanka Transport Board (SLTB). The Aluthgama Bus Stand serves as the primary bus stand of the town. It is located along the B157 Aluthgama – Mathugama road . [15]
The Aluthgama Railway Station is located on the Coastal Line, connecting Colombo to Matara and Beliatta.
Kegalle is a large town in Sabaragamuwa Province of Sri Lanka. It is located on the Colombo–Kandy road, approximately 78 km (48 mi) from Colombo, 40 km (25 mi) from Kandy, 32 km (20 mi) from Kurunegala and 46 km (29 mi) from Avissavella. It is the main town in the Kegalle District, which is one of two districts which comprise Sabaragamuwa Province. The town is governed by an Urban Council.

Tuan Burhanuddin Jayah, was a Sri Lankan educationalist, politician, diplomat and Muslim community leader and considered one of Sri Lanka's national heroes. He started his career as a school teacher and retired after serving 27 years as the principal of Zahira College, Colombo. Sammanthurai, is a town in Ampara District of Eastern Province of Sri Lanka. Sammanthurai situated at 7°22′0″N81°48′0″E, is 4.8 km west of the Bay of Bengal coast. It lies between the towns of Ampara and Karaitivu along the A31 road. It is surrounded by paddy fields and it is renowned for its rice paddies and its inner harbour from ancient times.
The 2014 anti-Muslim riots in Sri Lanka were religious and ethnic riots in June 2014 in south-western Sri Lanka. Muslims and their property were attacked by Sinhalese Buddhists in the towns of Aluthgama, Beruwala and Dharga Town in Kalutara District. At least four people were killed and 80 injured. Hundreds were made homeless following attacks on homes, shops, factories, mosques and a nursery. 10,000 people were displaced by the riots. The riots followed rallies by Bodu Bala Sena (BBS), a hard line Buddhist group. The BBS was widely blamed for inciting the riots but it has denied responsibility. The mainstream media in Sri Lanka censored news about the riots following orders from the Sri Lankan government.
Sheikh Hassan Bin Osman Magdoomy (1785-1866) is the first Moorish Saint of Sri Lanka, about whom chronological data are available. Hassan was one of the eminent walis in the country and was known as Alim Sahib Appa among his mureeds (disciples) in Sri Lanka.
