Diptera of Patagonia and South Chile is a series of books produced by the British Museum (Natural History) (now called the Natural History Museum). The books detail the Diptera collected primarily by the museum's expeditions to Patagonia in 1926, sometimes with notes of some later collections and material held in other collections.

Francisco Pascasio Moreno was a prominent explorer and academic in Argentina, where he is usually referred to as Perito Moreno. Perito Moreno has been credited as one of the most influential figures in the Argentine incorporation of large parts of Patagonia and its subsequent development.
Pierre-Justin-Marie Macquart was a French entomologist specialising in the study of Diptera. He worked on world species as well as European and described many new species.
Hermann Schmitz was a German entomologist who specialised in Hymenoptera and Diptera.
Embiomyia is a genus of tachinid flies in the family Tachinidae.
Poliops is a genus of tachinid flies in the family Tachinidae.
Pinacocerus is a genus of flies in the family Dolichopodidae, known from Chile and Argentina.
Austroleptis is a genus of snipe flies, and the sole genus in the family Austroleptidae; until 2010, it was placed in the family Rhagionidae. They are small to moderately sized flies of around 3 to 7.7 mm.
The Brachyopini is a tribe of hoverflies. Unlike many members of this family these flies are generally darker and less colourful though some genera contain species with an attractive metallic lustre e.g. Chrysogaster. Some like Brachyopa are associated with sap runs where their larvae feed on decaying sap. Others are found in boggy areas where their often semiaquatic larvae feed on decaying organic matter.

Empidinae are a subfamily of empidoid flies. They are mainly predatory flies like most of their relatives, and generally small to medium-sized. Most species are flower visitors and they can be effective pollinators.
