The Directorate of Medical Services (DMS) commands the Myanmar Army Medical Corps. The DMS also commands some military academies jointly with other directorates. Currently the Director of DMS is Maj Gen Soe Win. There are one Director, one Deputy Director, two Staff Officers (Grade 1) and two Staff Officers (Grade 2) in DMS.[ citation needed ]

The Myanmar Army Medical Corps (MAMC) is a specialist corps in the Myanmar Army which provides medical services to all Myanmar Army personnel and their families. The MAMC forms the Myanmar Armed Forces' essential military medical services under the command of the Directorate of Medical Services.

History

At the time of independence in 1948, the army medical corps had two 300-bed military hospitals in Mingaladon and Pyin Oo Lwin, a medical supply depot in Yangon, a dental unit and six camp reception stations located in Myitkyina, Sittwe, Taungoo, Pyinmana, Bago and Meikhtila. Between 1958 and 1962, the medical corps was restructured and all camp reception stations were reorganized into medical battalions.

In the 1990s, the size of DMS was significantly expanded along with the increase in the size of the infantry. In 2007, the DMS had under its administration two 1000-bed Defence Services General Hospitals (Mingaladon and Naypyitaw), two 700-bed Military Hospitals in Pyin Oo Lwin and Aung Ban, two 500-bed military hospitals in Meikhtila and Yangon, one 500-bed Defence Services Orthopedic Hospital in Mingaladon, two 300-bed Defence Services Obstetric, Gynecological and Children hospital (Mingaladon and Naypyitaw), one 300-bed Rehabilitation Hospital (Mingaladon), one 300-bed Defence Services Liver Hospital (Mingaladon), three 300-bed Military Hospital (Myitkyina, Ann and Kengtung), twenty 100-bed Military Hospitals (Mongphyet, Hpa-an, Indaing, Bahtoo,Myeik, Pyay, Loikaw, Namsam, Lashio, Kalay, Mongsat, Dawai, Kawthaung, Laukai, Thandaung, Magway, Sittwe, Hommalin, Bokpyin and Thabeikkyin), one 25-bed Military Hospital (Warzi), fourteen field medical battalions attached to various Regional Military Commands throughout the country. Each field medical battalion consists of a specialist team, three Field Medical Companies with three Field Hospital Units (each with 80 beds). Each field medical company consists of five mobile medical platoons. The Health and Disease Control Unit (HDCU), located in Mingaladon, is responsible for prevention, control and eradication of diseases. The DMS also had a medical depot in Yangon and a forward medical depot in Mandalay.

Mingaladon Township is located in the northernmost part of Yangon, Myanmar. The township comprises 31 wards, and shares borders with Hmawbi Township in the north, North Okkalapa Township in the east, Insein Township and Shwepyitha Township in the west, and Mayangon Township in the south. Mingaladon is still relatively undeveloped and lacks basic municipal services.

Pyin Oo Lwin Town in Mandalay Region, Myanmar

Pyin Oo Lwin or Pyin U Lwin, formerly and colloquially referred to as Maymyo (မေမြို့), is a scenic hill town in Mandalay Division, Myanmar, located in the Shan Highland, some 67 kilometers (42 mi) east of Mandalay, and at an altitude of 1,070 meters (3510 ft). The town was estimated to have a population of around 255,000 in 2014.

Aungban is a town located in the southern part of Shan State. It is located in Kalaw Township which is part of Taunggyi District. It lies at the elevation of 4219 feet above sea level. As of September 2017, its population was 30313. It is a junction town and thus majority of agricultural products from nearby towns and villages are collected there by traders and exported to other parts of country, especially to Yangon, Mandalay, Kayin and Mon States.

The Military Institute of Nursing and Paramedical Science (MINP), located in Mingaladon, Yangon, is one of military-run institutes of higher learning in Myanmar. The university offers bachelor's and master's degree programs in Nursing, a bachelor's degree program in Pharmacy, a bachelor's degree program in Paramedical Science.

The Myanmar Air Force, known until 1989 as the Burmese Air Force, is the aerial branch of Myanmar's armed forces, the Tatmadaw. The primary mission of the Myanmar Air Force since its inception has been to provide transport, logistical, and close air support to the Myanmar Army in counter-insurgency operations. It is mainly used in internal conflicts in Myanmar, and, on a smaller scale, in relief missions, especially after the deadly Cyclone Nargis of May 2008.

Districts are the second-level administrative divisions of Myanmar. They are the sub-divisions of the States and Regions of Myanmar. According to the Myanmar Information Management Unit (MIMU), as of December 2015, there are 67 districts in Myanmar, which in turn are subdivided into townships, then towns, wards and villages.

The Defence Services Technological Academy (DSTA), located in Pyin-Oo-Lwin, Myanmar, is the premier technological university of the Myanmar Armed Forces. One of the most selective universities in the country, the academy offers various Bachelor of Engineering degrees to male cadets only. Upon graduation, most DSTA cadets are commissioned as Engineering Officers with the rank of Lieutenant in one of the three branches of Burmese armed forces--army, navy, and air force. Some qualified cadets may choose to pursue further education in Yangon Technological University, Mandalay Technological University or abroad.

University of Medicine, Magway

The University of Medicine, Magway located in Magway, is one of five universities of medicine in Myanmar. The university offers an M.B., B.S. degree program, and master's degree programs in medical science.

Defence Services Medical Academy

The Defence Services Medical Academy (DSMA), located in Mingaladon, Yangon, is the University of Medicine of the Myanmar Armed Forces. One of the most selective universities in the country, the academy offers M.B., B.S. degree programs. Upon graduation, most DSMA cadets are commissioned with the rank of Lieutenant in the Myanmar Army Medical Corps. The military physicians are to serve the healthcare needs of rural people when they are assigned in the country's remote regions where access to healthcare is poor.

Burmese Gurkhas are a group of Nepali language speaking Burmese people of Gurkha ethnic group living in Myanmar. While the Gurkhas have lived in Burma for many centuries, it was during the British rule in Burma that the majority of the Gurkha migrated from Nepal.

Air KBZ is a privately owned domestic Myanmar airline based in Yangon. Air Kanbawza, otherwise known as AIR KBZ, was established in June 2010. The airline is owned by Kanbawza Bank and began operations with a Yangon-Bagan-Nyaung Oo-Mandalay-Heho-Yangon flight on 2 April 2011. In 2015 Air KBZ began codesharing international flights with its partner Myanmar Airways International, but on 2 December 2016 Air KBZ itself expanded internationally, launching its first scheduled service outside Myanmar with flights connecting Yangon and Chiang Mai in neighboring Thailand.

Mann Yadanarpon Airlines

Mann Yadanarpon Airlines Company Limited is a privately owned domestic airline based in Mandalay, Myanmar. The airline began operations in Feb, 2014. The airline also offers charter services and is planning to commence regional services to Thailand.

Miss Myanmar 2018 was the 6th Miss Universe Myanmar pageant. Zun Than Sin crowned her successor Hnin Thway Yu Aung at the end of the event. The winner will represent Myanmar at Miss Universe 2018 and 1st runner up will represent at Miss Grand International 2018.

Miss Universe Myanmar 2019, will be the 7th Miss Universe Myanmar pageant. Hnin Thway Yu Aung crowned her successor at the end of the event. The winner will represent Myanmar at Miss Universe 2019 and 1st runner up will represent at Miss Grand International 2019.
