Trevor Martin Chappell is a former Australian cricketer,a member of the South Australian Chappell family which excelled at cricket. He played 3 tests and 20 One Day Internationals for Australia. He won the Sheffield Shield with New South Wales twice,and scored a century for Australia against India in the 1983 World Cup. His career was overshadowed,however,by an incident in 1981 in which he bowled an underarm delivery to New Zealand cricketer Brian McKechnie to prevent the batsman from hitting a six.

New South Wales selection bias is a claimed bias of selectors of the Australian cricket teams towards players from New South Wales. It was alluded to in a quote by former South Australian captain David Hookes who said that,"when they give out the baggy blue cap in New South Wales,they give you a baggy green one in a brown paper bag as well to save making two presentations". Hookes' comment came at a time when,especially during the 1980s,there was public speculation that strong performances by non-NSW players were often ignored by the Australian selectors in favour of seemingly under-performing NSW players who were selected for the Test and/or One-Day team.
Kurtis Robert Patterson is an Australian cricketer who plays for the New South Wales cricket team in the Sheffield Shield,and the Sydney Sixers in the Big Bash League. Patterson scored a century on his first-class cricket debut for New South Wales in November 2011,becoming the youngest batsman to score a century in Sheffield Shield cricket. In January 2019,he made his Test debut for Australia against Sri Lanka,becoming the 457th person to play test cricket for Australia. He made a century in just his second test match in Canberra,also against Sri Lanka. He was not selected for the 2019 Ashes series and returned to play domestically in the 2019/2020 season. He has the highest average of any Test batsman who has lost their wicket at least once.
Jake Richard Doran is an Australian cricketer who plays for Tasmania and Hobart Hurricanes. He previously played for New South Wales. He is the youngest player to be signed to a Big Bash League contract. Doran is the younger brother of cricketer Luke Doran and attended The Hills Sports High School.

The season began after the conclusion of the Matador BBQs One-Day Cup,and included a break halfway through to allow for the Big Bash League. Trials for day/night Tests with a pink ball continued,having been introduced during the previous season. All of the matches for rounds one and seven of the tournament were played as day/night games. Victoria won their second consecutive title,defeating South Australia by 7 wickets in the final at Gliderol Stadium. Travis Head was named player of the series for his 721 runs and 9 wickets during the season. Ben Dunk of Tasmania was the leading run-scorer,while Joe Mennie from South Australia took the most wickets.

On 26 June 2020,Cricket Australia confirmed all the squads for the 2020–21 domestic cricket season. Cricket Australia also confirmed that the tournament would use the Kookaburra ball for all the matches,after using the Duke ball since the 2016–17 season. New South Wales were the defending champions.
The 2021–22 Sheffield Shield season was the 120th season of the Sheffield Shield,the domestic first-class cricket competition that was played in Australia. The tournament started in September 2021 ahead of the 2021–22 Ashes series. Queensland were the defending champions.
