Distorted Harmony is an Israeli progressive metal band from Tel Aviv, Israel, formed in 2009.
The band was formed in 2009, when composer and keyboardist Yoav Efron met drummer Yogev Gabay (also a member of Israeli progressive metal band Systema Teleion and Israeli progressive rock band Anakdota) and the two started working together. By 2011 they were joined by three members of Israeli alternative rock band HaTachtonim – vocalist Michael Rose (formerly named Misha Soukhinin), guitarist Guy Landau, and bassist Iggy Cohen (no longer a member of HaTachtonim). The band's debut album "Utopia" was released on May 14, 2012, to positive feedback. [2] Following the release of the album, the band started performing in Tel Aviv, Haifa, and Jerusalem. In October 2012, they performed at ProgStage festival in the Sea of Galilee, along with headliners The Flower Kings, Pain of Salvation, Andromeda and Orphaned Land. [3]
In December 2012, the band released demo song "Misguided," [4] which was later re-recorded and featured on the band's second album "Chain Reaction."
In early 2013, vocalist Michael Rose participated in the second season of reality TV singing competition The Voice Israel, reaching the quarter-finals with popular Israeli singer Sarit Hadad. [5]
In April 2013, the band released a cover version of Muse's song "The Small Print." [6] In July 2013, in light of its success with "Utopia," the band was nominated for the Progressive Music Award for New Blood presented by Prog Magazine, which is published by TeamRock, who also publishes the Classic Rock magazine. In September 2013, the band played support for Neal Morse (a member of Transatlantic and Flying Colors, and a former member of Spock's Beard) and Mike Portnoy (former drummer for Dream Theater) in Tel Aviv. [8]
In November 2013, the band started an Indiegogo campaign with a goal of $6,000, to cover production expenses of its second album "Chain Reaction." The campaign ended successfully in January 2014, with $6,056 raised. [9]
In July 2014, "Chain Reaction" was released both as a physical album and as a digital album. On its release day, to promote the new album, the band released the music video for "Natural Selection," a track on the album. [10] The band also played a "Chain Reaction" launch show in August 2014 in Tel Aviv. [11] Three months later, in November, the band held its first shows abroad, during a short tour in the Netherlands. [12]
In late 2015, the band revealed they are working on a third studio album. [13]
In October 2016, the band performed at ProgPower Europe 2016. [14] Soon after, in November 2016, the band announced a sixth member, guitarist Amit Plaschkes. [15]
In January 2017, the band headlined its own festival, DH Fest, in Tel Aviv, which also featured other Israeli artists such as Yossi Sassi Band and Yoav's musical project ARP. [16] At the festival, the band played a new song "Downfall" from its upcoming third studio album. It was video recorded and released online. [17]
In July 2017, the band parted ways with guitarist Guy Landau, and announced a new member, guitarist Yoel Genin. [18] In September 2017, the band performed at ProgPower USA 2017. [19] The band also performed in July 2018 at ARTmania Festival 2018 in Sibiu, Romania, alongside Steven Wilson, Leprous and Haken among others. [20]
The band's third studio album, "A Way Out", was released on July 19, 2018. [21] "We Are Free", the first single from the album, was released in May 2018. [22]
Yoav wrote about "A Way Out": "this time it's personal. It discusses 'me', 'us', 'with us', and how they're all blending together inside my head. Emotions, which define us, how we perceive and deal with our feelings, those we can control, but especially those we cannot - loneliness, anger, fear, desperation and even hope - they play such an important role in our lives, both as individuals and as a society. This is our strength but also our weakness - this is why we're both special and cursed at the same time. 'A Way Out' deals with those emotions of mine (mostly). It is heavy and aggressive, silent and scared, and might even be political." [23]
Distorted Harmony classifies its style as "a delicate combination of the complex progressive metal, the sound of modern alternative music, the unique harmonies of modern jazz and classical music, and some heavy shit." [24]
The band cites its influences as American progressive metal band Dream Theater, English psychedelic progressive rock band Porcupine Tree, English alternative rock band Muse, Swedish progressive death metal band Opeth and American djent movement forerunner progressive metal band Periphery, as well as generally jazz and classical music. Studio albums
Progressive rock is a broad genre of rock music that primarily developed in the United Kingdom through the mid- to late 1960s, peaking in the early-to-mid 1970s. Initially termed "progressive pop", the style was an emergence of psychedelic bands who abandoned standard pop traditions in favour of instrumentation and compositional techniques more frequently associated with jazz, folk, or classical music. Additional elements contributed to its "progressive" label: lyrics were more poetic, technology was harnessed for new sounds, music approached the condition of "art", and the studio, rather than the stage, became the focus of musical activity, which often involved creating music for listening rather than dancing.
Progressive metal is a broad fusion music genre melding heavy metal and progressive rock, combining the loud "aggression" and amplified guitar-driven sound of the former with the more experimental, cerebral or quasi-classical compositions of the latter.
Orphaned Land is an Israeli heavy metal band formed in 1991. They are known to combine Mizrahi and Maghrebi Jewish, Arabic, Turkish, and other Middle Eastern and North African musical elements, with metal, as well as from Sephardic music, and other sounds from the Mediterranean Region. They have also included "metalized" versions of various piyyutim in all of their albums since El Norra Alila. The band are considered to be the pioneers of oriental metal. Orphaned Land have gone through several lineup changes over the years, but have retained two founding members of the band, Kobi Farhi (vocals) and Uri Zelcha (bass). They are joined by Matan Shmuely (drums), Chen Balbus (guitars/saz) who replaced co-founding member Matti Svatizky in 2011, and Idan Amsalem (guitars/bouzouki) who replaced co-founding member Yossi Sassi in early 2014. Their lyrics promote a message of peace and unity, particularly between the three main Abrahamic religions. The name "Orphaned Land" comes from the lyrics of a Yehuda Poliker song and reflects "a paradox" to the term "Holy Land". Four of their six albums are concept albums relating to the concept of light and darkness.
Steven John Wilson is an English musician. He is the founder, guitarist, lead vocalist and songwriter of the rock band Porcupine Tree, as well as being a member of several other bands, including Blackfield, Storm Corrosion and No-Man. He is also a solo artist, having released seven solo albums since his solo debut Insurgentes in 2008. In a career spanning more than 30 years, Wilson has made music prolifically and earned critical acclaim. His honours include six nominations for Grammy Awards: twice with Porcupine Tree, once with his collaborative band Storm Corrosion and three times as a solo artist. In 2017, The Daily Telegraph described him as "a resolutely independent artist" and "probably the most successful British artist you've never heard of".

Blackfield is a collaborative music project by the English musician and founder of Porcupine Tree, Steven Wilson, and Israeli rock musician Aviv Geffen. Together, six albums have been released under the moniker. The first two records, Blackfield and Blackfield II, saw Geffen and Wilson working together as equal partners, while the third and fourth, Welcome to my DNA and Blackfield IV, saw Geffen take on a leading role, writing all but one track across both albums and providing a significantly increased share of lead vocals. Despite initially announcing his intention to leave the project in 2014, Wilson instead worked again as an equal partner on a fifth album, Blackfield V, which was released on 10 February 2017. A sixth record, For the Music, was released on 4 December 2020, with Geffen again taking a leading role.
Cynic is an American progressive metal band formed in Miami, Florida in 1987. The band has been primarily based in California since the late 1990s, marking a significant shift in their geographic and creative roots. Paul Masvidal originally served solely as the band's guitarist, but later took over as lead vocalist and chief songwriter. Cynic incorporates elements of progressive rock, alternative, and metal.
Alestorm are a Scottish heavy metal band formed in Perth, Scotland in 2004. Their music is characterised by a pirate theme, and as a result, they have been dubbed a "pirate metal" band by many critics and their fanbase. The group currently consists of lead vocalist/keytarist Christopher Bowes, bassist Gareth Murdock, drummer Peter Alcorn, keyboardist/harsh vocalist Elliot Vernon and guitarist Máté "Bobo" Bodor.
Oracles is a Belgian melodic death metal band formed by the couple Sven de Caluwé and Miri Milman and featuring members from Israel, Netherlands, Greece and the US. On 13 March 2014, the band had announced an indefinite hiatus and disbanded after a messy divorce between Sven and Miri, but reformed in December 2014 as Oracles, with Sanna Salou, from Dimlight, on vocals. In 2020, Miri Milman reformed System Divide, and released a new single.
Eatliz is an Israeli alternative/progressive rock band originally formed by Guy Ben Shetrit of punk rock band Infectzia in 2001. As of 2024, the band is still active. The band is known for its animated music videos and for constantly reinventing itself in every live show. The band members describe their sound as "complicated pop".
Haken are an English progressive metal band formed in 2007 by multi-instrumentalist Richard Henshall, guitarist Matthew Marshall, and vocalist Ross Jennings. While Henshall, Marshall, and Jennings first had the idea of forming Haken in 2004, they opted to pursue their instruments and songwriting first. Upon recruiting other members three years later, they eventually released the demo Enter the 5th Dimension in 2008, signing with Sensory Records and releasing their first album Aquarius in 2010. As of 2023, they have released seven studio albums, two EPs, and two live albums.
Leprous is a Norwegian progressive metal band from Notodden, formed in 2001. The group was founded by singer and keyboardist Einar Solberg and guitarist Tor Oddmund Suhrke.
