Donna Richardson Joyner (born November 3, 1962 [1] ) is an American fitness and aerobics instructor, author and ESPN television sports commentator. Widely known for her series of fitness videos, she was appointed in 2006 by President George W. Bush to serve on the President's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports. [2] She also produces and hosts Donna Richardson: Mind, Body, & Spirit, which airs on TV One, and Sweating In The Spirit, which airs on The Word Network.
She has served on the Women's Sports Foundation Board of Trustees and is an Advisory Board Member for the Boys and Girls Clubs of America.
Richardson is a native of Silver Spring, Maryland where she graduated from Montgomery Blair High School. [3] She was Blair's first African-American homecoming queen. Richardson cites Saundra Woods of Montgomery County Public Schools (teaches at White Oak Middle School as of Oct 08) as the teacher who most influenced her to excel and attain success. [4] She graduated from Hollins College with a degree in Health Education and Dance.
Richardson met popular syndicated radio personality Tom Joyner in 1997 after being a guest on his radio show. They became engaged one year later in August 1998, while in Philadelphia en route to the airport. On July 29, 2000, Richardson married Joyner in Montego Bay, Jamaica and had a week-long honeymoon in Venice Italy. [5] [6] [7] A report in December 2012 announced that Richardson and Tom Joyner had separated, in May 2012, in order to divorce. The New York Daily News stated that the separation is “mutual but not exactly amicable.” [8]
Certified by AFAA and ACE as an International Fitness Expert, Richardson-Joyner began her fitness career as an aerobics instructor, after responding to a challenge to take an aerobics class. [9] She eventually moved on to teach other instructors. Eventually she began to compete nationally and internationally in aerobics competitions.
In 1992 she was hired as a co-host of the ESPN Fitness Pros Show and co-starred in her first commercial fitness tape, Platinum Buns of Steel.
Richardson Joyner was selected by The Oprah Winfrey Show as one of the "Top 5 Fitness Video Instructors". She was selected by Fitness magazine as one of their "Top 10 Movers and Shakers" and was inducted into the National Fitness Hall of Fame.
Richardson Joyner not only was the star of Sweating in the Spirit, she was also the executive producer.
Richardson Joyner has lectured in 40 countries and has been a featured motivational speaker with several national tours including God's Leading Ladies, Sisters In The Spirit and the Pantene Total You.
Donna was named by Essence magazine for being “one out of 25 most inspiring women in America” in 2006.
Richardson Joyner is in the Guinness Book of World Records for creating and leading the world's largest line dance, with over 50,000 participants at Megafest hosted by Bishop T. D. Jakes in Atlanta, Georgia. [10]

It is usually performed to music and may be practiced in a group setting led by an instructor, although it can be done solo and without musical accompaniment. With the goal of preventing illness and promoting physical fitness, practitioners perform various routines comprising a number of different dance-like exercises. Formal aerobics classes are divided into different levels of intensity and complexity and will have five components: warm-up, cardiovascular conditioning, muscular strength and conditioning, cool-down and stretching and flexibility. Aerobics classes may allow participants to select their level of participation according to their fitness level. Many gyms offer different types of aerobic classes. Each class is designed for a certain level of experience and taught by a certified instructor with a specialty area related to their particular class.

Best Bones Forever! is a national bone health campaign that encourages girls ages 9–14 to adopt healthy habits for bone growth and osteoporosis prevention. The campaign was created by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Office on Women’s Health (OWH) in 2009. The campaign uses popular language, bright colors and images, and energetic messages to express a focus on fun and friendship. Best Bones Forever! aims to improve girls’ bone health behaviors, which include eating foods with calcium and vitamin D and participating in regular physical activity.

Jane Fonda's Workout, also known as Workout Starring Jane Fonda, is a 1982 exercise video by actress Jane Fonda, based on an exercise routine developed by Leni Cazden and refined by Cazden and Fonda at Workout, their exercise studio in Beverly Hills. The video release by Karl Home Video and RCA Video Productions was aimed primarily at women as a way to exercise at home. The video was part of a series of exercise products: Jane Fonda's Workout Book was released in November 1981, and both Jane Fonda's Workout video tape and Jane Fonda's Workout Record, published as a double-LP vinyl album, appeared in late April 1982. In July 1982, Fonda's exercise video was released on RCA SelectaVision videodisc. The VHS tape became a bestseller, and Fonda released further videos throughout the 1980s and into 1995. The video also increased the sales of video playback units.
Jacki Sorensen is the American originator of aerobic dancing, popularly known as aerobics. Inspired by Dr. Kenneth H. Cooper's 1968 book on aerobic exercise, she created for women an aerobic dance routine to music in 1969 in Puerto Rico, teaching U.S. Air Force wives. She expanded this concept into a teaching method and studio franchise, Aerobic Dancing Inc., that rose to 1,500 locations and 4,000 instructors teaching 170,000 students in 1981 at its peak.
