The Dr. Kiran C. Patel Center for Global Solutions is a research center based at the University of South Florida in Tampa, Florida. The Patel Center's main goals are to identify challenges in the developing world and find viable solutions to those problems, particularly issues related to potable water and sanitation, urbanization and migration, and sustainable activities.

Founding

The Patel Center for Global Solutions was created in May 2005 through a charitable donation from Dr. Kiran C. Patel, a cardiologist based in Tampa, and Dr. Pallavi Patel, a pediatrician also based in Tampa. [1] [2] The Patels contributed US$5 million to provide for a new facility for the Patel Center, matched with US$5 million by the state of Florida. Two of Kiran Patel's healthcare companies have a history of defrauding the US government. [3]

Executive Directors

Betty Castor, former President of the University of South Florida, was executive director of the Patel Center from January 2007 until June 2009. [4] Dr. Donna Petersen was named the interim executive director in August 2009. [ citation needed ]

Patel Fellows

In November 2007, the Patel Center announced its group of inaugural Patel Fellows. Each Patel Fellow, a member of the University of South Florida staff, receives a stipend of $15,000 to support research projects related to the Patel Center's work. [5]

Plans are currently underway to build a Patel Center facility on the campus of the University of South Florida.

Carole Post is the vice president of facilities and public safety operations at the University of South Florida. She assumed this role after serving as the City of Tampa’s administrator for development and economic opportunity. She previously served as the chief administrative officer of USF Health at the University of South Florida. She was formerly the executive vice president at New York Law School, and before that, the Commissioner of the New York City Department of Information Technology and Telecommunications (DoITT) and New York City's chief information officer (CIO). She was the first woman to have held such an office of the City of New York.

Mary Lou Harkness was a librarian and a university library director, the first woman to hold that title at any Florida university. She was the fourth employee hired by the University of South Florida.

The Florida Inventors Hall of Fame is an organization that honors Florida inventors, and is housed in the USF Research Park at the University of South Florida (USF) in Tampa, Florida. It was founded in 2013 by Dr. Paul R. Sanberg, senior vice president for research and innovation at USF, and is one of five state-specific halls of fame dedicated to inventors in the United States. In April 2014, State Senator Jeff Brandes sponsored the recognition of it, honoring the hall of fame for its commitment to invention, discovery, innovation, and excellence.

Randy Borum is a professor and coordinator of strategy and intelligence studies in the school of information at the University of South Florida and has taught at USF since 1999. He is author/coauthor of approximately 160 professional publications, has worked with three Directors of National Intelligence (DNI) on the Intelligence Science Board (ISB), served on the Defense Science Board Task Force on Understanding Human Dynamics, and is an instructor with the Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA) State and Local Anti-Terrorism Training (SLATT) Programs for Investigations and Intelligence.

The University of South Florida Tampa Library is the main research library for the University of South Florida. Housing over 1.3 million books, academic journals and electronic resources, including 52,000 e-journal subscriptions, 443,000 e-books, and over 800 databases, the library has more than 2 million visitors each year. The library offers tutoring and writing services, laptops, a career resource center, and course reserves. The facility houses several special and digital collections, including literature, oral histories, photographs, artifacts, and the university archives. The current Dean of USF Libraries is Todd Chavez.

The University of South Florida athletic facilities are the stadiums and arenas the South Florida Bulls use for their home games and training. The University of South Florida currently sponsors 19 varsity athletic teams and has 11 facilities in the designated Athletics District on or adjacent to its Tampa campus, one on its St. Petersburg campus, and one elsewhere in Tampa. 18 of the 19 teams have some sort of facility in the USF Athletics District.
