The University of South Florida College of Nursing is one of 14 colleges at the University of South Florida. [1] The college has three campuses: Tampa, St. Petersburg, and Sarasota-Manatee. [1]
The USF College of Nursing was founded in 1973, [2] enrolling its charter class into the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program. The college added a Master of Science in Nursing program in 1980, a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) program in 1997, and a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) program in 2005. [2]
The BSN program has expanded to include an accelerated second bachelor's sequence, [3] which is offered at its three campuses: Tampa, St. Petersburg, and Sarasota-Manatee. The college offers an online RN to BSN program [4] through which Registered Nurses can complete a bachelor's degree in patient and staff education, leadership and management, or clinical excellence. The VBSN V-CARE program [5] was created to allow veteran medics and corpsmen to become nurses.
The Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) program [6] offers concentrations in adult gerontology primary care, adult gerontology acute care, family health, nursing education, occupational health/adult-gerontology primary care, and pediatric health, as well as a concurrent Master of Public Health/MSN in adult-gerontology primary care.
The USF College of Nursing has two doctoral programs: PhD and the DNP. The PhD program [7] prepares nurse scientists to conduct research, publish scholarly work, and conduct faculty activities at research intensive universities. The DNP program [8] was the first such program approved by the Florida Board of Governors, [2] and provides advanced practice residency opportunities in primary care. The DNP in Nurse Anesthesia [9] prepares students to become certified registered nurse anesthetists (CRNAs).
Hospitals affiliating with the college include but are not limited to: Tampa General Hospital, Florida Hospital Tampa, St. Joseph's Hospital, Bayfront Medical Center, All Children's Hospital, James A. Haley Veterans’ Hospital, Shriners Hospitals for Children, Morton Plant Hospital,Moffitt Cancer Center & Research Institute, South Florida Baptist Hospital, and Sarasota Memorial Hospital.
The USF College of Nursing maintains more than 1,000 health care affiliations [1] throughout Florida to provide clinical experiences at the baccalaureate, master's, and doctoral levels.
USF Health is the partnership of the Morsani College of Medicine, the College of Nursing, the College of Public Health, the Taneja College of Pharmacy, the School of Biomedical Sciences and the School of Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Sciences, as well as the USF Physicians Group.

Internationally, since the 1990s, there have been a wide number of doctorate degrees available for nurses, including DProf, PhD and others. Internationally all such doctoral nursing degrees include mandatory research elements and take longer than a single year to complete.

Vanderbilt University School of Nursing (VUSN) is a graduate school of Vanderbilt University, located in Nashville, Tennessee. VUSN is closely connected with its parent university and the separate nonprofit Vanderbilt University Medical Center. The School of Nursing is ranked in the top 10 in the U.S. News & World Report rankings. Additionally, its Masters of Science program is ranked 8th, and its Doctorate of Nursing practice program 6th in the report's 2022 graduate school rankings.
The Texas A&M Health Science Center, a component of Texas A&M University, offers health professions research, education and patient care in dentistry, medicine, nursing, biomedical sciences, public health, and pharmacy. It was established in 1999 as an independent institution of the Texas A&M University System and received accreditation in December 2002 from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award baccalaureate, master's, doctoral and professional degrees. The institution merged with Texas A&M University proper on July 12, 2013.
The University of Virginia School of Nursing, established in 1901, is a school of nursing education. It has an enrollment of approximately 800 students, and is consistently rated in the top 4% of U.S. nursing schools. After the retirement of Dorrie K. Fontaine as the fifth dean of the School, two-term American Nurses Association President Pam Cipriano, a research faculty member at UVA for years, stepped in as interim dean in August 2019.
In the United States, a psychiatric-mental health nurse practitioner (PMHNP) is an advanced practice registered nurse trained to provide a wide range of mental health services to patients and families in a variety of settings. PMHNPs diagnose, conduct therapy, and prescribe medications for patients who have psychiatric disorders, medical organic brain disorders or substance abuse problems. They are licensed to provide emergency psychiatric services, psychosocial and physical assessment of their patients, treatment plans, and manage patient care. They may also serve as consultants or as educators for families and staff. The PMHNP has a focus on psychiatric diagnosis, including the differential diagnosis of medical disorders with psychiatric symptoms, and on medication treatment for psychiatric disorders.
The UCLA School of Nursing is a nursing school affiliated with UCLA, and is located in the Westwood neighborhood of Los Angeles, California. The school is housed in the Doris and Louis Factor Health Sciences Building, known as the Factor Building, on the south end of UCLA's 400-plus-acre campus, adjacent to the Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center.
The Nicole Wertheim College of Nursing and Health Sciences (NWCNHS) at Florida International University, located in Miami, Florida in the United States is one of the university's 26 schools and colleges and was founded in 1982. The college is centered in the Life Sciences Building, adjacent to the College of Human Medicine. The dean of the school is Randolph F. R. Rasch, PhD, RN, FAANP. The College of Nursing is among the top 100 graduate nursing programs in the country, ranking at #36 in the nation according to U.S. News & World Report. The College of Nursing at Michigan State University offers a professional student environment that fosters professional and personal development of pre-nursing and nursing students. The College shares the university's research, compassion, and high-achieving educational goals. The College provides several options to become a nurse or advance your nursing education. Those include: BSN Pathways, MSN Concentrations, DNP program, PhD program and Continuing Education. According to the College of Nursing's website, “80 faculty members represent a diverse blend of leading scholars and distinguished healthcare professionals who bring real world experience to the classroom. They conduct research that helps students graduate with confidence of moving forward with careers.” As a part of their role in the College of Nursing, faculty maintains a clinical practice. According to the Faculty Practice page, the clinic believes “teaching research, practice and service must be closely integrated to achieve excellence. It is also backed by the research of MSU, education programs of the College and Michigan State University Health Team.”

Nursing is the largest healthcare profession in the United States, with more than 3.1 million registered nurses. Between 2012 and 2022, employment for nurses is projected to grow by 19 percent, which is more than any other profession. Nurses make up the largest component of staff in hospitals but are also able to provide care in clinic settings, patient's homes, schools, nursing homes, public health agencies, and mental health centers. In addition, nurses can be found in the military, in industry, nursing education, and do health care research. Nurses in these various roles and settings can provide direct patient care and case management, but also develop and establish nursing practice and quality standards within complex healthcare systems. As each degree can provide a different level of care for patients and function in vastly different roles, it is important to differentiate between them. The levels of nursing degrees have different educational requirements, licensure, and credentialing that can vary state to state.
The Washington State University College of Nursing is a nursing school affiliated with Washington State University. Its main location is on the Washington State University Health Sciences campus in Spokane, Washington, with programs also offered at WSU Vancouver, WSU Tri-Cities, and in Yakima, Washington. Degrees offered include Bachelor of Science in Nursing; RN-BSN; Master of Nursing; Doctor of Nursing Practice; and PhD. Enrollment among all programs at all locations was 942 for spring semester 2018.
