The South Florida Bulls sailing team represents the University of South Florida in the sport of sailing. The team competes in the South Atlantic Intercollegiate Sailing Association within the Inter-Collegiate Sailing Association. [2] The Bulls are coached by Allison Jolly, a member of the National Sailing Hall of Fame and gold medalist in the first Olympic women's sailing event at the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul. [3] She has coached the team since 2004. [3] The team's home venue is within Tampa Bay, at the Donald A. Haney Landing Sailing Center on the University of South Florida St. Petersburg campus. It is the university's only varsity sport based on the St. Petersburg campus. [4]

The sailing program has won three ICSA National Championships: Sloop in 2009 and Offshore Large Boats in 2016 and 2017. [5] [6] [7] Their three national championships are the most of any USF team. In addition to these, the Bulls have won 12 conference championships.

History

Like many varsity sailing teams across the nation, the USF sailing team began as a club team at the USF St. Petersburg. [8] The club team was born in 1993, with USF St. Petersburg College of Education professor Dr. William "Steve" Lang serving as the head coach. [9] The team achieved varsity status in fall 1997, with Lang remaining as the head coach. [10] They won their conference title and qualified for the Intercollegiate Yacht Racing Association (now Inter-Collegiate Sailing Association) Team Racing National Championship during their first year of existence, and finished as the 11th-best team in the country. [10] [11] They returned to the National Championships in the following season as well. [12] Lang resigned as coach in 2000 to focus on his work as a professor at the university. [9] As of 2022, Lang still teaches at USF. [9]

Stephanie Doyle replaced Steve Lang as head coach in 2000. [13] The Bulls won conference titles in 2002, 2003, and 2004 under her leadership. [14]

After Doyle's departure in 2004, USF hired Olympic gold medalist and St. Petersburg native Allison Jolly as the third coach in program history. [3] Jolly has led the Bulls to three national championships (sloop in 2009 and offshore large boats in 2016 and 2017), [5] [6] [7] two national runner-up finishes (singlehanded in 2009 and 2011), [15] [16] eight conference championships, 14 appearances in ICSA nationals, and two appearances representing the United States in the Student Yachting World Cup. Anna Tunnicliffe Tobias is an American sailor and CrossFit competitor. In 2008 she won an Olympic gold medal in the Laser Radial single handed sailing class. In 2009 and 2011, she won the ISAF Sailing World Cup in Laser Radial. She also won the women's world championship of the snipe class in 2010, and placed second in 2008.

Allison Blair Jolly is an American sailor and Olympic champion. Born in St. Petersburg, Florida, Jolly began sailing at the age of 10 and attended the Florida State University where she won the Inter-Collegiate Sailing Association National Championships in 1975 and 1976. In 1976 she placed second in the European women's championship, and also took second place in the Timmy Angsten Regatta. In 1976, at the age of 20, she became the youngest woman ever to win the US Sailor of the Year Awards, "considered the top prize in yachting in the U.S." and was presented the award again after the Olympics in 1988. In 1979, she won the Adams Cup with the St. Petersburg Yacht Club team.

The South Florida Bulls baseball team is the intercollegiate men's baseball program representing the University of South Florida in Tampa, Florida. The team competes in the American Athletic Conference of NCAA Division I. Founded in 1966, the baseball team is one of the oldest teams at the university. The Bulls have captured eleven conference titles and 14 NCAA tournament appearances. The team plays their home games on campus at USF Baseball Stadium at Red McEwen Field and are coached by Billy Mohl.

The South Florida Bulls women's soccer team represents the University of South Florida in the sport of soccer. The Bulls currently compete in the American Athletic Conference within Division I of the National Collegiate Athletic Association. The Bulls play in Corbett Stadium along with USF's men's soccer team, which opened in 2011. Prior to that, they played at what is now the USF Track and Field Stadium.

The Leonard M. Fowle Trophy is a sailing trophy awarded annually by the Intercollegiate Sailing Association to the best overall collegiate team.

ICSA Men's Singlehanded National Championship is one of the seven Inter-Collegiate Sailing Association National Championships.

ICSA Women's Singlehanded National Championship is one of the seven Inter-Collegiate Sailing Association National Championships.

The University of South Florida athletic facilities are the stadiums and arenas the South Florida Bulls use for their home games and training. The University of South Florida currently sponsors 19 varsity athletic teams and has 11 facilities in the designated Athletics District on or adjacent to its Tampa campus, one on its St. Petersburg campus, and one elsewhere in Tampa. 18 of the 19 teams have some sort of facility in the USF Athletics District.

The South Florida Bulls tennis program represents the University of South Florida in the sport of tennis. The program consists of separate men's and women's teams and competes in the American Athletic Conference within NCAA Division I. The Bulls men's tennis team is coached by Ashley Fisher and the women's team is coached by Cristina Moros. Both teams play their home matches at the USF Varsity Tennis Courts on USF's campus in Tampa, Florida.
