Drew McConnell (born 10 November 1978 in Dublin, Ireland) [1] is the bass guitarist and backing vocalist with Babyshambles, the band formed by frontman of the Libertines, Pete Doherty, and for former Oasis frontman Liam Gallagher's band. He lived in Tenerife, Spain, for much of his childhood [2] and he speaks Spanish fluently. Formerly in the band Elviss, McConnell participates in a number of side-projects, such as the Phoenix Drive and playing double bass and piano with Irish singer/songwriter Fionn Regan as well as writing and recording solo material.

McConnell organises a musical collective named Helsinki, with which he performs solo material as well as versions of songs by Babyshambles, such as a swing version of their single "Delivery". Among the members of this collective are Stephen Large of Squeeze and Albert Hammond Jr of The Strokes.[ citation needed ], the drummer Seb Rochford of Polar Bear and Acoustic Ladyland, drummer Jamie Morrison (of the Noisettes), guitarist Matt Parks, Jonnie Fielding (violin), Larrikin Love and Fionn Regan.

McConnell completed a bass degree at the Institute of Contemporary Music Performance. [3]

He also appears in the video "Police on My Back" by UK grime artist Lethal Bizzle, playing bass.

McConnell is heavily involved with the Love Music Hate Racism movement, contributing a song with Babyshambles and Helsinki to a CD given away free with a copy of the NME in 2007, as well as playing at such events as the Love Music Hate Racism carnival with Jon McClure of Reverend and the Makers.

McConnell also fronted the musical collective Mongrel with Jon McClure and members of Arctic Monkeys.

In 2011, McConnell was in a near-death crash where he was hit by a motorist who was accused of breaking a red light, and knocking McConnell off the bike and crushing his spine. He has since recovered, and said of the incident, "Humans are designed to deal with trauma of a physical and emotional kind. It's the stuff of life." [4]

On 5 May 2014 McConnell's Helsinki released its debut album Coast of Silence. Its 12 tracks included "New Pair" and "The Very Last Boy Alive" which have also been recorded by Babyshambles.

In 2015, he released another album called A Guide for the Perplexed, including the track "Choices" featuring Pete Doherty.

In 2017, McConnell is played bass guitar in Liam Gallagher's tour band, in support of Gallagher's solo album, As You Were .

In 2023, he released a new single called "Homo Nymph" on a split 7-inch vinyl with Italian band Lowinsky. [5]

The Blinding EP is an EP by English indie rock band Babyshambles. It was the band's first release since signing with major record label Parlophone. The EP was released on 4 December 2006 in the United Kingdom to positive critical reviews by that label's offshoot Regal Records and on 5 December in the United States by Capitol Records. The EP entered the official UK Albums Chart at #62 on 11 December 2006, while the title song entered the download chart at #77. A week later, an entry on band's official MySpace blog stated that had a fifth track not been added to make the EP ineligible in the UK Singles Chart, "The Blinding" would have entered that chart at #4. As with their debut album, Pete Doherty designed the artwork for the EP.

Up the Shambles – Live in Manchester is a live DVD of the band Babyshambles. The DVD was released without the band's prior knowledge, according to bassist Drew McConnell. It was released around the time of the band's second album Shotter's Nation, but not only featured a much older version of the band, it was recorded prior to the release of the first album Down in Albion. The set list features songs of the band's debut, B-sides, unreleased songs and songs by Pete Doherty's other band The Libertines.

Oh! What a Lovely Tour is a CD/DVD package by the British indie rock band Babyshambles released on 2 June 2008. It is the first live album of the band. In addition to the concert film edited and directed by Giorgio Testi, the DVD also contains the music videos for "The Blinding", "Love You But You're Green", "Delivery" and "You Talk".

<i>Grace/Wastelands</i> 2009 studio album by Peter Doherty

Grace/Wastelands is the debut solo studio album from the Babyshambles frontman and the Libertines co-frontman Peter Doherty. It was released in Australia on 13 March 2009, in the UK on 16 March, and in the US on 24 March, with the single "Last of the English Roses" preceding it by one week. The album features contributions from Blur guitarist Graham Coxon Dot Allison, Peter Wolfe, and members of Babyshambles. Most of the songs have been played live or feature in demo form on leaked sessions.

Elviss were a West London-based British alternative rock band, who were active during the mid-2000s releasing only one album titled Dead Cat and Sharksick in 2004. The album was due to be released in 2003 after the release of their third single "Radio ", but it was put back until the band had a hit single. It ultimately was never released in their homeland but was released in Japan on 21 April 2004 with a retail price of 2,100 Yen. The UK release was due to be 11 tracks only, but the Japanese version had 12 with "Orange Glow" as this track. The band's name was a reference to the Enhanced Low light level and Visible Surveillance System (ELVISS). During their brief career, they opened for Feeder at a Kerrang!-sponsored gig and also opened for Stone Sour. They were also championed by the magazine itself, which included an appearance at the Kerrang! Weekender in 2002 at Camber Sands, East Sussex. The intro of their Deadcat and Sharksick track "Tantrum", was used as an indents soundbed on Kerrang!'s music channel in 2003.

Sequel to the Prequel is the third and final studio album by the English band Babyshambles. It was released on 3 September 2013 under EMI Records. It is their first release of new material since 2007's Shotter's Nation.

Peter Doherty and the Puta Madres are a British band, formed by Pete Doherty and is his third musical project after the Libertines and Babyshambles. The band's first album, the self titled Peter Doherty and The Puta Madres, was released on 26 April 2019. On 28 January 2019 they released their debut single, "Who's Been Having You Over", followed by "Paradise is Under Your Nose" on 5 April.
