He was born January 26, 1972, and was given his first unicycle at the age of 10. Two years later he joined the Twin Cities Unicycle Club in Minneapolis and discovered there was much more he could do on a unicycle besides his paper route. Over the years he has claimed national and world records, titles and medals in age group categories as well as men's expert categories.

Dustin was elected to serve on the board of directors for the Unicycling Society of America for two three year terms (1989–1991, 1993–1995). [1] [2]

Dustin Kelm has been instrumental in the development of unicycles. In 1998, Dustin went to Terry Osell (bike shop owner and bicycle frame builder) to see if he could fix a cracked unicycle frame. Terry determined that it couldn't be fixed. Terry's apprentice, Paul Wyganowski, built Dustin a new frame from scratch. This was Paul's first unicycle frame ever built. A few weeks later, Dustin won the World Championship in Men's Expert Freestyle in Bottrop Germany on that unicycle frame. People saw that Dustin's custom Wyganowski frame was different from any other unicycle frame seen before, and they wanted one. Paul has since built many unicycles for many others around the world. In addition to the freestyle frame, Paul has also built the following unicycles for Dustin, each incorporating unique, functional features not found elsewhere: trials, double wheel, 6 ftr. and 10 ftr.

Here are Paul's own words: "During my time at Terry’s shop I got introduced to unicycles as Terry was the only shop owner who was willing to stock unicycles for the local club. I never initially tried to build a unicycle. My introduction into building unicycles came via a request from Dustin Kelm of UniShow. He came to me with his old Miyata standard unicycle and asked if I could replace it with a new one. He informed me of certain things he needed and some he wanted as features. A few weeks later, with some rare frame parts I had access to, I produced my first custom freestyle unicycle. Little did I know that it was going to set an industry standard... I started building many unicycles for people in Europe, Japan and a few other countries, as well as across the U.S." [3]

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Unicycle</span> One-wheeled mode of transportation

A unicycle is a vehicle that touches the ground with only one wheel. The most common variation has a frame with a saddle, and has a pedal-driven direct-drive. A two speed hub is commercially available for faster unicycling. Unicycling is practiced professionally in circuses, by street performers, in festivals, and as a hobby. Unicycles have also been used to create new sports such as unicycle hockey. In recent years, unicycles have also been used in mountain unicycling, an activity similar to mountain biking or trials.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Mountain unicycling</span> Adventure sport

Mountain unicycling is an adventure sport that consists of traversing rough terrain on a unicycle. Mountain unicycling (muni) is undertaken on similar terrain to mountain biking. However, muni requires much more attention to the microfeatures of the short distance in front of the wheel. Unicycles' lack of a freewheel means that descents must be controlled all the way, and the typical lack of a gear system prevents the rider from reaching high speeds. Muni usually takes place on specially designed unicycles, which are equipped with strong hubs, large, knobbly tires, high-grip pedals and rugged frames. Some are also equipped with rim or disc brakes, having the lever mounted under the nose of the saddle. The brake primarily helps to compensate the downhill-slope force, while more expert riders also use it to decelerate or stop.

An electric unicycle is a self-balancing personal transporter with a single wheel. The rider controls speed by leaning forwards or backwards, and steers by twisting or tilting the unit side to side. The self-balancing mechanism uses accelerometers and gyroscopes. Most manufacturers of EUCs are based out of China, including Segway, Inmotion, Kingsong, Begode, and Leaperkim.

The crankset or chainset is the component of a bicycle drivetrain that converts the reciprocating motion of the rider's legs into rotational motion used to drive the chain or belt, which in turn drives the rear wheel. It consists of one or more sprockets, also called chainrings or chainwheels attached to the cranks, arms, or crankarms to which the pedals attach. It is connected to the rider by the pedals, to the bicycle frame by the bottom bracket, and to the rear sprocket, cassette or freewheel via the chain.

Unicycle time trial records are performances that are not set in unicycle competitions. They require a separate organization. The unicycles used for these records generally belong to the "unlimited" category. In other words, there are no limits on wheel size, crank length or frame shape. The only rule is that they must have a single wheel and no motorized assistance.
