Dwein Ruedas Baltazar is a Filipino filmmaker. She is best known for directing the films Gusto Kita With All My Hypothalamus (2018) and Oda Sa Wala (2018). [1] She has also directed a number of iWantTFC series, such as Past, Present, Perfect? (2019) and I Am U (2020). [2] [3]

Baltazar began her career in independent cinema but has since directed a number of works for ABS-CBN, such as the series Marry Me, Marry You (2021). Baltazar's works tend to focus on themes of loneliness and fear. [4]

Early life and education

Baltazar received a BA in Communication Arts from the Colegio de San Juan de Letran in Manila, Philippines. [5] She has stated her cinematic influences to include Michel Gondry and François Ozon. [6]

Career

Baltazar started her career in the entertainment industry as a stylist for film and television, which she worked as for three years for filmmakers such as Raya Martin and Chris Martinez. [7] [8] In 2012, she directed her debut feature Mamay Umeng, which won the Best Picture prize at the 2013 Jeonju International Film Festival. [9] Baltazar's sophomore film, Gusto Kita with All My Hypothalamus, released in 2018, also received international plaudits, winning two awards at the Golden Horse Film Festival in Taipei. [10]

In 2019, Baltazar's film Oda sa Wala was screened in competition at the 54th Karlovy Vary International Film Festival. [11] [12] It also won major awards at the 67th Filipino Academy of Movie Arts and Sciences (FAMAS) Awards, winning Best Picture, Best Screenplay, and Best Director. [13]

In 2021, she directed her first commercial work, the film Hello Stranger: The Movie. [14]

Whether the Weather is Fine or Kun Maupay Man It Panahon is a 2021 drama film directed and co-written by Carlo Francisco Manatad in his feature directorial debut. The film is a disaster movie which combines satirical and surreal elements. Starring Daniel Padilla, Rans Rifol, and Charo Santos-Concio, the film is set against the backdrop of the devastation caused by the 2013 Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines. The film is a joint production by Black Sheep Productions, Globe Studios, and Dreamscape Entertainment.

Carlo Francisco Manatad is a Filipino filmmaker and editor. He is one of the most prolific editors in the Philippines and has edited the films Ruined Heart (2014), A Gentle Night (2017), Balangiga (2017) and Women of the Weeping River (2018) to name a few. As a director, his films have screened in a number of international film festivals, such as in Locarno, Toronto, Busan, and Cannes.

Iana Celest Aquino Bernardez is a Filipino film producer and actress known for her production work on films such as Kiko Boksingero, Oda Sa Wala, Tia Madre, and Babae at Baril and for her critically acclaimed film acting debut in the 2018 film Gusto Kita with All My Hypothalamus. She also won Best Supporting Actress at the 2019 Cinema One Originals Digital Film Festival for the 2019 film Metamorphosis. She is the daughter of Filipina actress Angel Aquino.

The 19thCinemalaya Independent Film Festival was held from August 4 – 13, 2023 in Metro Manila, Philippines with the theme being “IlumiNasyon” (illumination). A total of ten full-length features and ten short films competed. The festival was opened by the film Where is the Lie? by Quark Henares and its closing film was Third World Romance by Dwein Baltazar. This year, the festival proper was held at the Philippine International Convention Center instead of the Cultural Center of the Philippines, its annual venue, due to the latter being under renovation until 2025.
