Earl Fauconberg (or Earl of Fauconberg, or Earl Fauconburg, or Earl Falconberg, or Fauconburg) was launched at Whitby in 1765. From 1784 on she made numerous voyages as a Greenland whaler. She was lost there in 1821.

Career

Earl Fauconberg's early career is obscure as she did not enter Lloyd's Register (LR) until 1784. She first entered LR with T. Johnson, master, "H.Yeomn", owner, and trade Whitby–Davis Strait. She had undergone repairs in 1777. [3]

Between 1784 and 1799 Earl Fauconberg made annual voyages to the Greenland whale fisheries from Whitby. [4]

There are occasional press mentions of whales taken. Thus on 18 July 1788, Lloyd's List (LL) reported on vessels still at Davis Strait and among the Whitby ships, listed Earl Falconberg with "2 Fish". [5]

Francis Agar was master of Earl Faucenberg in 1791 and in 1799–1800. [6]

The Register of Shipping (RS) for 1801 showed Earl Falconberg (of 351 tons burthen, launched at Whitby in 1765), with J. Crosby, master, J. Atty, owner, and trade Newcastle–London. [7] Although one source reports that Earl Fauconberg was sold to Grimbsby in 1801, [1] she proceeded to make four whaling voyages from Kingston upon Hull.

In 1807, after the Battle of Copenhagen, the crew of the whaler Faucenberg were among the many seamen from Grimbsby who volunteered to sail to Copenhagen to help bring back the Danish vessels that the Royal Navy had captured. [8]

In 1802 Earl Fauconberg was reported to have taken ten whales. [10] She returned to LR in 1803 after an absence of more than a decade. Her master was J. Smith, her owner was Atty & Co., and her trade was Hull–Greenland. [11]

In 1806, Earl Fauconberg collided with Hunter, while both were on their way to Greenland. Hunter had to return to the Humber. [12]

Later, in March 1806, Earl Fauconberg was driven ashore at Aberdeen, Scotland, during a voyage from Grimsby, Lincolnshire, to Greenland. [13] [14] She later was refloated and put into Aberdeen for repairs. [15] [16]

Circa 1810 investors formed the Greenland Fishery Company. It had two ships, Birnie and Earl Fauconberg. Birnie, a Spanish prize, was crushed by ice in 1815 Davis Strait. Between 1815 and 1818 Earl Fauconberg gathered only eight whales. The Greenland Fisher Company, including its boiling house and premises, were sold to George Tennyson. [17]

LR for 1821 showed Earl Fauconberg with I.Smith, master, Plaskett, owner, and trade Hull–Davis Strait. She had undergone repairs in 1816 for damages. [2] The RS gave the master's name as Cooper, and the year of the repairs as 1817. [18]

Fate

Earl Fauconberg was sunk by ice off the coast of Greenland in 1821. [19]

After her loss, the Greenland Fishery Company was wound up. [17]

William and Ann was built at a King's Yard in 1759, under another name. From 1786 until 1791 she was a whaler in the northern whale fishery. In 1791 she transported convicts to New South Wales and then began whale hunting around New Zealand; she returned to England in 1793. Circa 1801 she again became a whaler in the northern whale fishery, sailing from Leith. She continued whaling until 1839. She then began trading widely, to Bahia, Bombay, Archangel, Spain, Honduras, and the Mediterranean. She was last listed in 1857, having been in service for over 90 years.

HMS <i>Swan</i> (1767) Sloop of the Royal Navy

HMS Swan was launched on 21 November 1767 at Plymouth as the lead ship of the 24 ships in the 14-gun Swan-class of ship-sloops built in the 1760s and 1770s. She served during the American Revolutionary War and the French Revolutionary War. She bore the name HMS Explosion between 1779 and 1783; at the time she was classed as a fireship. She was laid up in 1801 and finally sold in 1814. Swan then became a whaler in the northern whale fishery, sailing out of Kingston-on-Hull. She also made one voyage to the southern whale fishery (1819–1821) and one merchant voyage to Brazil and Hamburg, before returning to the northern whale fishery. She was broken up circa. 1841.

Camden was built at Whitby in 1813. She served as a general trader for much of her career, though in 1820-21 she made one voyage to Bombay for the British East India Company (EIC). Between 1833 and 1837 she was a Greenland whaler out of the Whitby whale fishery, and was the last vessel from Whitby to engage in whaling. She was last listed in Lloyd's Register in 1850.

Broderick was launched at Shields in 1786. Between 1786 and 1793 she made seven annual voyages as a whaler in the northern whale fishery. In 1806 she accidentally sank Jenny's Adventure , but in 1824 she rescued the crew of Hyperion, which was foundering in the Atlantic. Broderick was last listed in 1866.

Glenmore was launched in 1806 at Elgin. She was initially a West Indiaman. She made one voyage to Bengal in 1813–14. She became a Greenland whaler in 1818 and made four full whaling voyages. She was lost in the White Sea in 1822.

Cicero was launched at Hull in 1819 as a Greenland whaler, hunting bowhead whales. She made six full voyages to the Greenland whale fishery and was lost in July 1826 on her seventh.

Andrew Marvel was launched at Hull in 1812. From 1812 to 1835 she was a Greenland whaler, hunting bowhead whales in the northern whale fishery. Thereafter she became a merchantman. She foundered in September 1843 while on a voyage from Hull to Saint John, New Brunswick.

Bellona was launched at Lancaster in 1799. She was a West Indiaman that made one voyage as a whaler. She disappeared in 1809 as she was returning to England from Jamaica.

Aurora was launched at Kingston upon Hull. She traded with the Baltic until 1803 when she became a Greenland whaler. She was lost in 1821 on her 18th voyage to the northern whale fishery.

Blenheim may have been launched in 1776 in Philadelphia as Britannia. By 1777 she was the Massachusetts-based privateer American Tartar and had taken several prizes. She had also participated in an inconclusive single-ship action with a British merchantman. The British Royal Navy captured American Tartar late in 1777 and she became HMS Hinchinbrook. The Royal Navy sold her in 1783 and she became the West Indiaman Blenheim. In 1785-86 she became a Greenland whaler and she continued in that trade until two French frigates captured and burnt her in 1806.

Lord Wellington was launched in 1810 at Hull. She made 20 voyages to Davis Strait and Greenland as a northern whale fishery whaler. She was lost in June 1834 on her 21st voyage.

Regalia was launched at Sunderland in 1811. In 1819 she made a voyage to Calcutta, sailing under a license from the British East India Company (EIC). She also sailed to New South Wales and Van Diemen's Land. From Sydney she engaged in several sealing hunting voyages to the waters around Macquarie Island. In 1826 she transported convicts from Dublin to New South Wales. From 1831 until 1852, when she was wrecked at Davis Strait, Regalia was a whaler in the northern whale fishery.

Royal Bounty was launched in South Carolina in 1770, probably as George and Sarah. Her owners changed her name to Royal Bounty circa 1786. As Royal Bounty she sailed out of Leith, going on annual whale hunting voyages to the northern whale fishery. She was wrecked in 1819 on her 35th such voyage.

Lynx was launched at Whitby in 1776. From 1777 to 1798 she traded with the Baltic. Between 1798 and 1811 Lynx engaged in whaling in Davis Strait, in the British northern whale fishery. She then changed to trading with New Brunswick; in 1812 a French privateer captured her.
