The Eastern Grass Court Championships was a combined men's and women's tennis tournament held on outdoor grass courts in the New York City area from 1927 to 1969. It was founded by the Eastern Lawn Tennis Association of the USLTA, and in 1939, became the first tennis competition to be televised in the United States. [1]

History

The Eastern Grass Court Championships were founded in 1927 under the aegis of the Eastern Lawn Tennis Association (the New York City regional chapter of the USLTA). [2] Also in 1927 the Eastern Clay Court Championships began under the direction of the Eastern Lawn Tennis Association.

The first edition was held in 1927 at the Westchester Country Club, in Rye, New York. In 1946 the tournament relocated to the Orange Lawn Tennis Club in South Orange, New Jersey. [3] The tournament was played on outdoor grass courts and was usually held in August. [4] [5] In 1970 the tournament was renamed the Marlboro Open, [6] which continued until 1983.

Frank Kovacs was an American amateur and professional tennis player in the mid-20th century. He won the U.S. National Indoor Tennis Championships singles title in 1941. He won the World Professional Championships tournament in 1945 in San Francisco. Kovacs was successful on clay and won the Great Lakes Professional Clay Court Championships near Chicago in 1946, defeating Riggs in the final, and five U.S. Professional Clay Court Championships from 1948 to 1953. Kovacs won U.S. Professional Championships or International Professional Championships at Cleveland in 1951. He also won the U.S. Professional Challenge Tour in 1947 against Bobby Riggs.

The Manchester Trophy was a professional tennis tournament played on outdoor grass courts. It was previously part of the ATP Challenger Tour and now currently part of the ITF Women's Circuit. It is held annually at the Northern Lawn Tennis Club in the Didsbury suburb of Manchester, England since 1995. The original defunct tournament, the Manchester Open, began in 1880 as the prestigious Northern Championships and continued until the event became a lower level Challenger tournament in 1995. The Challenger event ended in 2009, but was revived in 2015. The men's tournament was discontinued after the 2016 edition while the women's tournament was established in 2017 and ended in 2019.

The Irish Open and originally known as the Irish Championships or Irish Lawn Tennis Championships, and for sponsorship reasons also known as Carroll's Irish Open Championships was a men's and women's tennis tournament held at the Fitzwilliam Lawn Tennis Club in Dublin, Ireland. Before the creation of the International Lawn Tennis Federation and the establishment of its world championship events in 1913, it was considered by players and historians one of the four most important tennis tournaments to win. the others being Wimbledon, the U.S. National championships and the Northern Championships. The men's event was part of the pre-open era tour from inception until 1967. It was then part of the open era non-aligned independent tour (1968–69). From 1970 to 1974, it was an event on the Grand Prix tennis circuit. The women's event was on the same tours as the men except for when it became part of the Women's Tennis Association (WTA) Tour from 1971 to 1973. The South Orange Open, formerly known as the Eastern Grass Court Championships, is a defunct Grand Prix affiliated tennis tournament founded in 1970 as the Marlborough Open Championships and was until 1983. It was held in South Orange, New Jersey in the United States and played on outdoor grass courts from 1970 to 1974, and then played on outdoor clay courts from 1975 to 1983. There were men's and women's singles tournaments as well as men's, women's, and mixed doubles.

The Carolinas International Tennis Tournament, also known by its sponsored name North Carolina National Bank Tennis Classic, was a combined men's and women's tennis tournament founded in 1965. Also known as the Carolinas Invitational it was played at the Julian J. Clark Tennis Stadium on the grounds of the Olde Providence Racquet Club in Charlotte, North Carolina from 1965 through 1977. The inaugural edition was part of the Grand Prix tennis circuit while the following editions were part of the World Championship Tennis (WCT) circuit. The event was held on outdoor hard courts in 1971, and on outdoor clay courts in 1970 and from 1972 through 1977.

The Pennsylvania Lawn Tennis Championships also known as the Pennsylvania State Lawn Tennis Championships also known as the Pennsylvania Grass Court Open Championships was a tennis tournament played at the Merion Cricket Club in Haverford, Pennsylvania from 1894 to 1974.

The Orange Lawn Tennis Club is the second oldest tennis club in New Jersey. Located in South Orange, it was established three years after the Seabright Lawn Tennis and Cricket Club in Rumson.

The event was part of the 1979 Grand Prix circuit. It was the tenth edition of the tournament and was held from July 30 through August 5, 1979. First-seeded John McEnroe won the singles title and earned $13,000 first-prize money.

The Westchester County Championships was a tennis tournament founded in 1885 as the Westchester Lawn Tennis Club (Invitation) and first played at the Westchester Lawn Tennis Club, Harrison, Westchester County, New York, United States on grass courts, later switching to clay courts, the finally hard courts. The tournament was played at various locations during its run until 1974.

The Eastern Clay Court Championships was a combined men's and women's international tennis tournament on clay courts founded in 1927 by the Eastern Lawn Tennis Association of the USLTA. The championships were held in various locations in the New York City area, U.S. until 1971.

The Ardsley Invitation was a men's and women's tennis tournament founded in June 1916. It was organised by the Ardsley Country Club (f.1895), Ardsley-on-Hudson, United States and played on grass courts and ran until 1939.
