Eastern Institute for Integrated Learning in Management University (EIILM University) was a private university located in Jorethang, Sikkim, India with another campus in Malbasey. [1] The university has been reported by the University Grants Commission (UGC) to be non-functioning since December 2014 and was officially dissolved by the Government of Sikkim in April 2015.
The institute was established in 1995 to provide quality and career-oriented education in India through variety of programs. In 1999 it started offering a Master of Business Administration course through Visva-Bharati University, later[ when? ] becoming a constituent college of the university. In 2006 it was established as a university under Sikkim State Legislature Act No 4, 2006, with the Malvika Foundation as the sponsoring body. The Act received assent of the Governor on 24 March 2006 and published under the Government of Sikkim Gazette Notification No. 28/LD/2006 dated 3 April 2006. The university was run by the Rai Foundation. [2]
In 2013 the VC, chairman, registrar, and the controller of examinations were arrested by the police in Sikkim and Bengal in a case of forgery, cheating and criminal conspiracy. [3] [4]
According to a fact-finding committee constituted by the UGC in April 2015, EIILM University was recognized and approved by the UGC through its main campus in regular mode, but was not authorized to open study centers within or outside Sikkim. [5] The committee concluded that all degrees beyond academic year 2009-14 are not valid. Only degrees awarded to students in four courses, i.e. B.A. (Hospitality & Tourism), BSC, BCA, B.COM and MBA till academic year 2009-14 may be valid. [5] It further concluded that the university is not functioning since December 2014 and reports that the cabinet of Sikkim approved the dissolution of the university on 28 April 2015. [5] Following this, a notice was published by the UGC in August 2015 cautioning students not to take admission in EIILM University. [5] A notice by the Human Resource Development Department of the Government of Sikkim from 27 October 2015 further approved the same conclusions. [6] In another notice, the registrar in charge appointed by the government of Sikkim has validated degrees of students who have completed their course from the Jorethang/Budang campus before dissolution. [7] A petition (WP(C) No.33 of 2015) was filed by the Malvika Foundation and the EIILM University against the State of Sikkim to cancel the UGC notification, but the same has since been dismissed on 2 November 2016 by the Sikkim High Court. Jadavpur University is a public state funded research and technology university with its main campus located at Jadavpur, Kolkata, West Bengal, India. It was established in 1906 as Bengal Technical Institute and was converted into Jadavpur University in 1955. As of 2024 NIRF rankings, Jadavpur University has been ranked 9th among universities, 12th among engineering institutes, and 17th overall in India. The university has been recognized by UGC as an institute with "Potential for Excellence" and accredited an "A" grade by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC).

The University of Madras is a public state university in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India. Established in 1857, it is one of the oldest and among the most prominent universities in India, incorporated by an act of the Legislative Council of India under the British government.
The Indian Institute of Planning and Management (IIPM) was an unaccredited institute headquartered in New Delhi, which previously had 18 branches across India. IIPM was shut down after multiple allegations and lawsuits concerning the institute's use of false advertisements and fraudulent practices. After several controversies, the school's Honorary Dean Arindam Chaudhuri decided to shut down all campuses across India, except the one in Delhi. Founded in 1973, the institute used to offer undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral programmes in national economic planning and entrepreneurship, and international and fellowship programmes. Its executive education programmes include non-credit courses and visits to foreign business schools. IIPM is not accredited by UGC or All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), and is not affiliated with the public Indian Institutes of Management.
In India, a deemed university or deemed-to-be-university is an accreditation granted to higher educational institutions in India by the Ministry of Education. According to the ministry's definition, the accreditation indicates, "an Institution of higher education, other than universities, working at a very high standard in specific area of study" and the accreditation grants "the academic status and privileges of a university".
University Grants Commission is a statutory body under Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Education, Government of India. It was set up in accordance to the UGC Act 1956 and is charged with coordination, determination and maintenance of standards of higher education in India. It provides recognition to universities in India, and disbursements of funds to such recognized universities and colleges. The UGC headquarters are in New Delhi, and it has six regional centres in Pune, Bhopal, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Guwahati and Bangalore. A proposal to replace it with another new regulatory body called HECI is under consideration by the Government of India. The UGC provides doctoral scholarships to all those who clear JRF in the National Eligibility Test. On an average, each year ₹725 crore (US$87 million) is spent on doctoral and post-doctoral fellowships by the commission.
Aliah University is a public state university in New Town, West Bengal, India. Previously known as Mohammedan College of Calcutta, it was elevated to university in 2008.
Arindam Chaudhuri is an Indian national best known for his involvement with the now-defunct Indian Institute of Planning and Management, an unaccredited institute that was previously headquartered in New Delhi and had 18 branches across India. The institute has been widely criticized for false advertisements and fraudulent practices. On 23 August 2020, Chaudhuri was arrested for tax evasion of ₹230 million (US$2.8 million).
Rai University (RU) is a private university located in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, India. The university was established in 2012 by the Rai Foundation through the Gujarat Private Universities Act (Amendment), 2012, the same act which established Indus University.
CHRIST, also known as Christ College and Christ University, is a deemed-to-be-university located in Bengaluru, Karnataka, India. Founded in 1969 as Christ College, the UGC conferred autonomy to the college in 2004. On 22 July 2008, it was declared as an institution deemed to be university under section 3 of UGC Act 1956 by the Ministry of Education, Government of India.

The 2G spectrum case was a political controversy in which politicians and private officials of the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) coalition government India were allegedly involved in selling or allotting 122 2G spectrum licenses on conditions that provided an advantage to specific telecom operators. A. Raja, then Telecom Minister, was accused of selling 2G spectrum licenses at a very low cost which resulted in the loss of ₹1,760 billion in government revenue. Raja was also accused of not following rules and regulations as well as not recognizing any advice from the Ministries of Finance and Law and Justice of India while allotting 2G spectrum licenses to telecom operators. Series of allegations were made on allotting 2G spectrum licenses including allegations from Central Bureau of Investigation after investigating the case alleging Raja for intentionally advancing the cut-off date to favour some specific firms, which were allegedly ineligible for applying for telecom licenses, in return for bribes.

Darjeeling Hills University is a public state university in Darjeeling district, West Bengal, India. The university was established in 2021 by The Greenfield University Act, 2018 of the Government of West Bengal. This act was later amended by The Greenfield University (Amendment) Act, 2019 which replaced the name 'Greenfield University' with 'Darjeeling Hills University'. The university became active with the appointment of the first Vice-Chancellor (VC), Subiresh Bhattacharya, in November 2021.
