Sikkim Professional University, erstwhile Vinayaka Missions Sikkim University , [1] Gangtok, Sikkim, India is a State Private University founded in the year 2008 [2] under Sikkim Professional University Act, Sikkim (Act No. 11 of 2008) of Sikkim State Assembly. SPU is recognized by the University Grants Commission of India (UGC), The Indian Nursing Council (INC), and the Pharmacy Council of India (PCI). Formerly, the University was well known by Vinayaka Missions Sikkim University but now the name has been amended to Sikkim Professional University as per The Vinayaka Missions Sikkim University (Amendment) Act, 2020; (Act No 09 of 2020).
Sikkim Professional University (SPU), previously known as Vinayaka Missions Sikkim University is a renowned educational institution established in 2008 under SPU(Act No.11 of 2008) of Sikkim State Assembly. The first PG degree Batch graduated in 2011. The University is located in the east of Sikkim along the NH-31 –A in Tadong,Gangtok. The University is approved by the University Grants Commission /(UGC).

Sikkim Professional University (SPU) celebrated its sixth convocation on 12 November 2022. On convocation day 123 students received their degree. The degrees were offered in presence of faculty, staff, students, parents and eminent dignitaries like Education Secretary D.C. Nepal, MLA Sunita Gajmer, SPU Chairman Hemant Kumar Goyal, vice chancellor (in-charge) Prof. Jaswant Sokhi were present in the convocation ceremony. The honorable Education Minister of Sikkim, Mr. Kunga Nima Lepcha attended the convocation ceremony as Chief Guest, he shared a few words as speech at the convocation and congratulated students with inspiring words.
The 6th Convocation of Sikkim Professional University (SPU) was held on Saturday at its campus located in Budang under Soreng district. The event had Education minister Kunga Nima Lepcha as the chief guest.

Hon’ble Governor of Sikkim Shri Lakshman Prasad Acharya was the Chief Guest of the Programme Seventh #convocation ceremony held at Sikkim Professional University where129 students were awarded degrees across various graduate, postgraduate, and diploma programmes. The honourable #Governor of Sikkim, 𝗦𝗿𝗶 𝗟𝗮𝘅𝗺𝗮𝗻 𝗣𝗿𝗮𝘀𝗮𝗱 𝗔𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗿𝘆𝗮 graced the convocation ceremony encouraged graduates to take pride in their heritage and contribute to the nation’s development. In addition, he also urged students to pursue courses of interest and highlighted the significance of individual growth for progress of the nation.
129 students across graduate, post-graduate, and diploma programs received their degrees during the 7th Convocation of Sikkim Professional University (SPU) at Chintan Bhawan, Gangtok on December 23, 2023. These students represented various constituent colleges of SPU, including Sikkim Professional College of Allied Health Sciences (SPCAHS), Sikkim Professional College of Pharmacy (SPCOP), Sikkim Professional College of Nursing (SPCON), and Sikkim Professional College of Arts and Science (SPCAS).
