North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU) is a Central University established on 19 July 1973 by an Act of the Indian Parliament. The university is in the suburb of Shillong, the state capital of Meghalaya, India. The university has two campuses, in Shillong and Tura. Both campuses are in Meghalaya state. The first pro-vice chancellor was Early Rising Singha [3]

It is the University Grants Commission's University with Potential for Excellence (conferred in 2006). It was established as a regional university for the states of northeast India, including Meghalaya, Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh and Mizoram, and had given birth to Nagaland University in 1994 and Mizoram University in 2001. [4]

Campus

NEHU has two academic campuses, one at Mawkynroh-Umshing, Shillong, and another at Chasingre, Tura. Shillong is the headquarters of academic and administrative functions. The main campus is 1225 acres in area. It accommodates National Council of Science Museums (NCSM), Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU), Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR), Sports Authority of India (SAI) and The English and Foreign Languages University (EFLU). Organisation and administration

Governance

The head of the administration is the vice-chancellor (VC), who is appointed by the visitor of the university, the President of India, for a five-year tenure. The Governor of Meghalaya is the chief rector. Under the VC are two pro-vice-chancellors, one for each of the two campuses, Tura and Shillong, and a Registrar. [6] As of December 2021, the VC is Prabha Shankar Shukla. [7]

Initially, the academic departments and the administration of NEHU at Shillong functioned from three prime sites in the Shillong city; one from the former Maharaja of Mayurbhanj, the other from the Rani of Bijni and the third one from the Government of Meghalaya, popularly known as Horse-Shoe Building. The university now runs its central administration from its main campus in Mawkynroh-Umshing. [4]

Jurisdictions and affiliated colleges

The jurisdiction of the university extended originally to the states of Meghalaya and Nagaland and the erstwhile Union Territories of Arunachal Pradesh and Mizoram. [9] With the establishment of the Nagaland University on 6 September 1994, the jurisdiction of NEHU ceased over Nagaland. Likewise with the establishment of the Mizoram University the jurisdiction of NEHU over Mizoram also ceased from June 2001. Arunachal Pradesh has its own university. [10]

Academics

Library

The Central Library started in 1973 with a collection of 600 books. Its membership demographic includes university and college teachers, postgraduate and undergraduate honors students and members of the non-teaching staff. The permanent library at Shillong campus was funded by the Indian Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (MDoNER) and inaugurated in 2006. It now has a collection of over 230,000 books, 38,000 bound periodicals and it subscribes to 316 foreign and 366 Indian journals. [11] Readers can also have access to Thesis works compiled by PhD recipients over the years. The library is technologically endowed for ease and comfort of the students. A highly qualified library staff is available to assist students with any help they need. The library has a collection of rare works by leading Indian scholars some of which are not available anywhere, but certain libraries in the country.

The Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region is a Government of India ministry, established in September 2001, which functions as the nodal Department of the Central Government to deal with matters related to the socio-economic development of the eight States of Northeast India: Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Tripura and Sikkim. It acts as a facilitator between the Central Ministries/ Departments and the State Governments of the North Eastern Region in the economic development including removal of infrastructural bottlenecks, provision of basic minimum services, creating an environment for private investment and to remove impediments to lasting peace and security in the North Eastern Region.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">R. Lalthantluanga</span>

R. Lalthantluanga is a retired professor of biochemistry and the former vice chancellor of Mizoram University, India. He is the first Mizo to become vice chancellor of Indian universities, and he is the third vice chancellor of Mizoram University. He is the former head, professor and founding faculty of the Department of Biochemistry, Dean of School of Life Sciences, and pro-vice-chancellor of North Eastern Hill University.

The Meghalaya Board of School of Education (MBOSE) was set up under The Meghalaya Board of School Education Act, 1973, to regulate, control and supervise matters related to School Education in the state of Meghalaya, India. It was initially set up to control the SSLC Exam until, the Pre-University degree was discontinued by the North Eastern Hill University(NEHU) in 1996. Since then, MBOSE has been responsible for conducting the Secondary School Leaving Certificate(SSLC) as well as the Higher Secondary School Leaving Certificate(HSSLC) Exam in the state. Initially, it started functioning in the Office of the Director of Public Instruction, Shillong which was later shifted to Araimile, Tura in 1974. MBOSE also has a regional office located at the state capital of Shillong. At present, there are about 1400 affiliated schools spread across the state of Meghalaya.

National Law University and Judicial Academy, Assam is a National Law University located in Guwahati, Assam, India. It was established in 2009 through an Act passed by the State Legislature of Assam as a public university dedicated to the field of legal education.

David Reid Syiemlieh is an Indian academician and the former Chairman of the Union Public Service Commission of India. He studied in Dr Graham's Homes, Kalimpong (1958–1970) and graduated with history honours from St.Edmund's College, Shillong. This was followed with a master's degree in History (1976), MPhil (1980) and PhD (1985) from the North Eastern Hill University, Shillong. He taught undergraduates in St. Edmund's College (1977–1979) before joining the Department of History, NEHU, in 1979. He rose in the profession to become a Professor in the Department of History. He held numerous positions in the University, including Dean of Students' Welfare; Head Department of History; Controller of Examinations; Registrar and Pro-Vice-Chancellor. Prof. Syiemlieh, is a former vice-chancellor, Rajiv Gandhi University, Doimukh, Arunachal Pradesh.

The Indian state of Meghalaya has a literacy rate of 62.56, according to the census of 2001, and is India's 27th most literate state. This, however, had rapidly increased to 75.5 by 2011.

Amar Nath Rai is a professor of biochemistry at the North Eastern Hill University, Shillong, India. He had served as Vice Chancellor of Mizoram University and North Eastern Hill University. Between 2013 and 2015, he was Director of the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) of India.

North East India Christian Council (NEICC) is a Protestant ecumenical council of North East India, affiliated to the National Council of Churches in India as one of the regional councils in the year 1939.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Tourism in Northeast India</span>

Northeast India consists of eight states: Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim and Tripura. Tourism in this area is based around the unique Himalayan landscape and culture distinct from the rest of India.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Northeast India border disputes</span>

Border disputes of Northeast India mainly include inter-state conflict between Assam–Mizoram, Assam–Arunachal Pradesh, Assam–Nagaland and Assam–Meghalaya. The disputes, including clashes between rival police forces, have resulted in the loss of life, livelihood and property. The border disputes in some cases are part of the larger national (separatist), sub-regional and ethnic conflicts, as well as criminal enterprise fuelled. This internal land conflict in the districts of the northeast are part of the 322 districts affected by ongoing land conflicts out of a total of 703 districts in India.
