Ethiopia is a federation subdivided into ethno-linguistically based regional states and chartered cities. This system of administrative regions replaced the provinces of Ethiopia in 1992.
The Southern Nations, Nationalities, and Peoples' Region was a regional state in southwestern Ethiopia. It was formed from the merger of five kililoch, called Regions 7 to 11, following the regional council elections on 21 June 1992. Its government was based in Hawassa.
The Sidama are an ethnic group traditionally inhabiting the Sidama Region, formerly part of the Southern Nations, Nationalities, and Peoples' Region of Ethiopia. On 23 November 2019, the Sidama Zone became the 10th regional state in Ethiopia after a zone-wide referendum. They speak the Sidama language, which is a language of the Cushitic branch of the Afroasiatic language family. Despite their large numbers, the Sidama lacked a separate ethnic regional state until continuous protests resulted in the proposal being voted on in a November 2019 referendum.
Jimma is a zone in Oromia Region of Ethiopia. Jimma is named after former Kingdom of Jimma, which was absorbed into the former province of Kaffa in 1932. Jimma is bordered on the south by the Southern Nations, Nationalities and Peoples Region, the northwest by Illubabor Zone, on the north by East Welega Zone and on the northeast by West Shewa Zone; part of the boundary with West Shewa Zone is defined by the Gibe River. The highest point in this zone is Mount Maigudo. Towns and cities in Jimma include Agaro, Limmu Inariya and Saqqa. The town of Jimma was separated from Jimma Zone and is a special zone now.
Bale Zone is a zone in Oromia Region of Ethiopia. Bale is bordered on the south by the Ganale Dorya River which separates it from Guji Zone, on the west by the West Arsi Zone, on the north by Arsi Zone, on the northeast by the Shebelle River which separates it from West Hararghe Zone and East Hararghe Zone, and on the east by the Somali Region.
Gedeo is a zone in the South Ethiopia Regional State (SERS) of Ethiopia. This zone is named for the Gedeo people, whose homelands lie in this zone. Gedeo is an exclave of the SERS consisting of a narrow strip of land along the eastern escarpment of the Ethiopian Highlands. It is surrounded by the Oromia Region, which borders the Zone on the east, south and west; Gedeo shares its northern boundary with the Sidama Region. Dilla is the administrative center; other towns include Dilla, Wonago, Yirgachefe, Chelelekitu and Gedeb.
The Sidama Region is a regional state in southern Ethiopia. It was formed on 18 June 2020 from the Southern Nations, Nationalities, and Peoples' Region (SNNPR) and transformation of the Sidama Zone after a 98.52% vote in favour of increased autonomy in the 2019 Sidama referendum. It is the second smallest regional state in the country, after Harari. Sidama is the name of both the Sidama people and Sidama territory. Sidama is bordered to the south by the Oromia Region (except for a short stretch in the middle where it shares a border with Gedeo zone, in South Ethiopia Regional State, on the west by the Bilate River, which separates it from Wolayita Zone, and on the north and east by the Oromia Region. Towns in Sidama include Hawassa, the capital of Sidama and of SNNPR when it existed, Yirgalem, Wondogenet, Chuko, Hula, Bona, Bursa, Bensa, and Aleta Wendo. Sidama has a population of around 3.2 million in 2017 who speak the Cushitic language Sidama.
Dara is one of the woredas in the Sidama Region of Ethiopia. Part of the Sidama Region, Dara is bordered on the south by the Gedeo Zone and on either side of it by the Oromia Region, on the northwest by Chuko, on the north by Aleta Wendo, and on the northeast by Hula. Towns in Dara include Kebado, Teferi Kela Abera and Machisho.
Munesa is one of the Aanaas in the Oromia Regional State of Ethiopia. Part of the Arsi Zone located in the Great Rift Valley, Munesa is bordered on the south and west by the West Arsi Zone and Lake Langano, on the northwest by Batu Dugda, on the north by Tiyo, on the northeast by Digeluna Tijo, and on the east by Bekoji. The administrative center of the woreda is Kersa; other towns in Munesa include Ego.
Kokosa is one of the Aanaas in the Oromia of Ethiopia. Being part of the West Arsi Zone, Kokosa is bordered on the south and west by the Sidama Region, on the north by the Kofele, on the northeast by Dodola, and on the southeast by Nensebo. The administrative center of this woreda is Kokosa; other towns include Diki, Gata, BokoreHebano, Hogiso.
Nensebo is one of the Aanaas in the Oromia of Ethiopia. Part of the West Arsi Zone, Nensebo is bordered on the south by the Borena Zone, on the west by the Southern Nations, Nationalities and Peoples Region, on the northwest by Kokosa, on the north by Dodola, on the northeast by Adaba, on the east by Bale Zone. Towns in Nensebo include Werka.
West Guji is one of the zones of the Oromia Region of Ethiopia. Located in southern Oromia, West Guji is bordered on the south by Borena, on the west by the South Ethiopia Regional State, on the north by the Gedeo Zone of South Ethiopia and Sidama Region and on the east by the Guji Zone. Its administrative center is Bule Hora.
Ari is an administrative zone in South Ethiopia Regional State. Until August 2023, Ari was a part of the South Omo Zone. It is named for the Aari people, whose homeland is in the zone. Ari is bordered on the south by South Omo Zone, on the Northeast by the Gofa Zone and North by the Basketo Zone. The administrative centre of Ari Zone is Jinka.
Asrat Tera Dolebo is an Ethiopian politician serving as Director General of Livestock Development Institute of Ethiopia since October 2018. Asrat is from the Wolaita people and previously served as the chief administrator of Wolayita Zone. He also worked in South Agricultural Research Institute and Areka Agricultural Research Center.

The administrative centre of Northern Sidama Zone is Hawassa.
Central Sidama Zone is an administrative zone in Sidama Region. The zone was established upon a resolution passed by the Sidama regional state council at its third round meeting of the first year in 2022. The zone was established around the end of 2022. Central Sidama is bordered on the south by the Southern Sidama Zone, on the east by the Oromia region, on the north by the Northern Sidama Zone on the southeast by the Eastern Sidama Zone, and west by the Wolayita Zone and Oromia region. The administrative centre of Central Sidama Zone is Irgalem.
Southern Sidama Zone is an administrative zone in Sidama Region. The zone was established after two years later from the establishment of the Sidama region. Southern Sidama Zone is established in August 2022 up on resolution passed by Sidama regional state council. Southern Sidama is bordered on the south by the Oromia region and Gedeo Zone, on the east by the Eastern Sidama Zone, on the north by the Northern Sidama Zone on the west by Oromia region. The administrative centre of Southern Sidama Zone is Aleta Wendo.
