EdLab is an education research organization located at Columbia University's Teachers College in New York City. The EdLab attempts to create easier methods of education through communication and advancements in technology, [2] and serves as both a university and community resource center. [3]
Founded in 2004, it started under the leadership of Professor Gary Natriello, [4] Edlab is a unit of the Gottesman Libraries at Teachers College. [5] [6] [7] EdLab houses both library administration and an interdisciplinary team of developers, designers and content creators. [8] Their work is divided into five foundational areas: Reimagining Schooling, Innovations for Online Learning, New Directions for Online Publishing, Efficiencies in Educational Research, and Charting the Future of Libraries. [1] EdLab is organized in small flexible multi-disciplinary teams that collaborate to develop and deliver products and services of distinction. [6]
Vialogues is a free, online video discussion platform. [9] It was created and developed by a dedicated team of educators, researchers, and engineers from EdLab at Teachers College Columbia University. [10] As well as uploading original content, vialogues allows users to "borrow" content from YouTube & Vimeo in order to create a discussions. [11] Vialogues also allows users to embed video discussion on other websites, and allows videos to be private or public, as well as include interactive features like polls. [12] Research has shown that the use of cognitive words within vialogues discussions contributes positively to user engagement, in addition to the number of views, the number of moderator comments, and the number of time-code clicks, which also correlate positively with user engagement. The New Learning Times (NLT) is an online publication created and hosted by EdLab, [14] centered on developing innovations in the education sector. It publishes articles daily, aiming to provide "coverage of the transformation of learning opportunities in the information age for those shaping the future of education". Seen in NY was a weekly web series produced by EdLab Studios and published as part of the New Learning Times project platform. [17] As a video series, Seen in NY focused on current educational opportunities in New York. The videos were designed as a resource for the education community, and as stand-alone pieces which represented the work of the featured organization or event. [18] They were part of the new learning sector, where the experience of making the videos are part of the pedagogic experience, as video dialogues. [19]
Seen in NY featured a wide array of educational opportunities, experiences and events, from hundreds of different organizations in New York City, [20] and across the entire state. There are approximately 250 episodes spanning multiple demographics and featuring a diverse range of subject matter, from STEM, to arts, and social justice, [21] that are available on the EdLab blog, on EdLab's Vialogues interface, [22] and as embedded content on the subject of the videos' organization websites.

Rhizr is an online learning tool which brings together learners of similar interests and provides a space to share thoughts, work together, and build off of ideas. Users are able to create, remix and share educational resources amongst each other. [23] Rhizr was created in 2017 [24] by a team of researchers, developers, and content creators at the Gottesman Libraries of Teachers College Columbia University. [25] The mSchool initiative paved the way for what is now known as Rhizr. [26] The name is a metaphor based on a Rhizome, which is a structure of roots and nodes organized in a random and non-hierarchically structure. "Rhizomatic learning" is based on ideas from Gilles Deleuze. [27] Rhizr utilizes modules so that users can share, organize and save information in a non-linear way with a format that is similar to Trello. [28] In June 2019 a new version of Rhizr was released by EdLab with greater flexibility and faster search. [29]
EdLab hosts seminars [30] at the EdLab space on the 5th Floor of the Gottesman Libraries at Teachers College (almost) every Wednesday. [31]
EdLab is the publisher of the Teachers College Record, [32] [33] [34] a journal of research, analysis, and commentary in the field of education which has been published continuously since 1900 by Teachers College.
Postdoctoral research scientists at Edlab draw on their prior professional experience to invent, manage, and assess a range of new functions and services as part of the overall research program designed to create a rich environment for self-directed and social learning in the library and beyond. The first introduction of the LMS was in the late 1990s. Learning management systems have faced a massive growth in usage due to the emphasis on remote learning during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Educational technology is the combined use of computer hardware, software, and educational theory and practice to facilitate learning. When referred to with its abbreviation, "EdTech," it often refers to the industry of companies that create educational technology. In EdTech Inc.: Selling, Automating and Globalizing Higher Education in the Digital Age, Tanner Mirrlees and Shahid Alvi (2019) argue "EdTech is no exception to industry ownership and market rules" and "define the EdTech industries as all the privately owned companies currently involved in the financing, production and distribution of commercial hardware, software, cultural goods, services and platforms for the educational market with the goal of turning a profit. Many of these companies are US-based and rapidly expanding into educational markets across North America, and increasingly growing all over the world."

TeacherTube is a video sharing website. It is designed to allow those in the educational industry, particularly teachers, to share educational resources such as video, audio, documents, photos, groups and blogs. The site contains a mixture of classroom teaching resources and others designed for teacher training. A number of students have also uploaded videos that they have made as part of K-12 and college courses. As of July 2008, the website contained over 26,000 videos. In October 2010, TeacherTube had over a million members and over 400,000 educational videos. It has found favor with educators from institutions where YouTube content is blocked by content filtering systems.
Sarah Maxine Greene was an American educational philosopher, author, social activist, and teacher. Described upon her death as "perhaps the most iconic and influential living figure associated with Teachers College, Columbia University", she was a pioneer for women in the field of philosophy of education, often being the sole woman presenter at educational philosophy conferences as well as being the first woman president of the Philosophy of Education Society in 1967. Additionally, she was the first woman to preside over the American Educational Research Association in 1981.

Susan Harriet Fuhrman is an American education policy scholar and served from 2006 as the first female president of Teachers College, Columbia University. Fuhrman earned her doctorate in Political Science and Education from Columbia University. She became very engaged in issues of educational equity and emerged as an authority on school reform. Fuhrman is known for her early and ongoing critical analysis of the standards movement and for her efforts to foster research that provides a scientific basis for effective teaching.
Learning analytics is the measurement, collection, analysis and reporting of data about learners and their contexts, for purposes of understanding and optimizing learning and the environments in which it occurs. The growth of online learning since the 1990s, particularly in higher education, has contributed to the advancement of Learning Analytics as student data can be captured and made available for analysis. When learners use an LMS, social media, or similar online tools, their clicks, navigation patterns, time on task, social networks, information flow, and concept development through discussions can be tracked. The rapid development of massive open online courses (MOOCs) offers additional data for researchers to evaluate teaching and learning in online environments.
Edmodo was an educational technology platform for K-12 schools and teachers. Edmodo enabled teachers to share content, distribute quizzes and assignments, and manage communication with students, colleagues, and parents. It was shut down on September 22, 2022.
A virtual learning environment (VLE) in educational technology is a web-based platform for the digital aspects of courses of study, usually within educational institutions. They present resources, activities, and interactions within a course structure and provide for the different stages of assessment. VLEs also usually report on participation and have some level of integration with other institutional systems. In North America, VLEs are often referred to as Learning Management Systems (LMS).

It is one of the nation's largest and most comprehensive research libraries in education, and the scope of its collections reflect the historic commitment to advanced study in education, psychology, and the health professions in their local, national, and international dimensions. Its standard opening hours are Monday through Thursday 8 am to 11 pm, Friday 8 am to 7 pm, Saturday 12 pm to 7 pm, and Sunday 12 pm to 11 pm. The library supports numerous services, including online and in-person support, chat or real-time transmission of text messages, sponsored events, exhibits and displays, instructional offerings and research consultations, the Library Blog, and live musical performances. Automated acquisitions, interlibrary loan, printing, scanning, and room booking services are available. Historical collections focus on pedagogical research, curriculum and children's literature, and institutional history, with extensive material accessible via Pocket Knowledge, the digital archive.
