Efrem Gidey (born 3 September 2000) is an Irish long distance runner. [1]
Gidey fled Eritrea as a refugee in 2016 and spent six months at a refugee camp in Calais before arriving in Dublin in March 2017 when he was 16 years-old. He learnt English at Le Chéile Secondary School in Tyrellstown, where he sat the Leaving Cert in 2019 and began training at Clonliffe Harriers under Joe Cooper. He later lived with Cooper's son Ian. He won the senior boys’ race at the Irish Schools Cross Country Championships and he won the senior boys’ 5,000m at the All-Ireland Schools Track and Field Championships in both 2018 and 2019. After Cooper's death in 2020 he continued a relationship with the family, with Cooper’s wife Gladys and Ian supporting him at races. [2] [3]
Gidey received Irish citizenship in 2019. [4] That year, he won the All Ireland Schools U20 men’s 5000m race with a U20 national record time of 14:34.22. [5] He won a bronze medal at the 2019 European Cross Country Championships in Lisbon in the U20 individual event, won by Jakob Ingebrigtsen. [2] [3] [6]
Gidey finished sixth in the 10,000 metres at the 2022 European Athletics Championships in Munich. [7] In October 2022, he set a course record in helping his Conliffe team win the Northern Ireland and Ulster Road Relay Championships in Victoria Park, Belfast. [8]
In September 2023, he finished fifth in the Great North Run in his debut run over the half marathon distance in a time of 1:04:3. [9]
In January 2024, he ran a new personal best time of 27:56 competing in Valencia over 5km on the road. [10] Competing at the Night of 10,000m PB's meet in London on 18 May 2024, Gidey clocked 27:40.00 to go second on the all-time Irish list, and just 0.45 of a second from Alistair Cragg's national 10,000m record. [11] He was selected for the Irish team for the 2024 European Athletics Championships. [12]
Kenenisa Bekele Beyecha is an Ethiopian long-distance runner. He was the world record holder in both the 5,000-metre and 10,000-metre from 2004 until 2020. He won the gold medal in both the 5,000 m and 10,000 m events at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. At the 2004 Olympics, he won the gold medal in the 10,000 m and the silver medal in the 5,000 m.

The 5000 m has been present on the Olympic programme since 1912 for men and since 1996 for women. Prior to 1996, women had competed in an Olympic 3000 metres race since 1984. The 5000 m has been held at each of the World Championships in Athletics in men's competition and since 1995 in women's.
Sifan Hassan is an Ethiopian-born Dutch middle- and long-distance runner. She is most recognized for her versatility in running championship and world leading performances in widely disparate distances. She completed an unprecedented triple at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, winning gold medals in both the 5,000 metres and 10,000 metres and a bronze medal for the 1,500 metres. Hassan is the only athlete in Olympic history to win medals across a middle-distance event and both long-distance races in a single Games. She is only the second woman to complete an Olympic distance double.
Gudaf Tsegay Desta is an Ethiopian middle- and long-distance runner. She is the current women’s world record holder for 5,000 m (14:00.21), set at the 2023 final Diamond League event, the Prefontaine Classic in Eugene, Oregon. Eugene is also where she won the World Athletics Championships on 5,000 m in 2022. At the World Athletics Championships, Tsegay also won the gold medal for 10,000 metres in 2023; a bronze for the 1,500 metres in 2019, and silver in 2022. She is the 2020 Tokyo Olympic bronze medallist in the women's 5,000 metres. She is a two-time World Indoor Championship 1,500 m medallist, claiming bronze in 2016 and gold in 2022. She is also the world indoor record holder for the 1,500 m, setting previously in this event world under-18 (current) and U20 (former) records.
Letesenbet Gidey is an Ethiopian long-distance runner. In the 10,000 metres, she is the 2020 Tokyo Olympic bronze medallist, 2019 World silver medallist, and 2022 World champion.
Rodgers Kwemoi Chumo is a Kenyan long-distance runner specialising in the 5000 metres and 10,000 metres. He is the 2018 Commonwealth Games bronze medallist at the longer distance.
