Rudraksha is a seed that is used as a prayer bead in Hinduism, especially in Shaivism. When they are ripe, rudraksha seeds are covered by a blue outer shell and are sometimes called blueberry beads. The seeds are produced by several species of large, evergreen, broad-leaved tree in the genus Elaeocarpus, the principle of which is Elaeocarpus ganitrus. The seeds are associated with the Hindu deity Shiva and are commonly worn for protection and for chanting mantras such as Om Namah Shivaya. The seeds are primarily used in India, Indonesia and Nepal as beads for organic jewellery and malas; they are valued similarly to semi-precious stones. Various meanings and interpretations are attributed to beads with different numbers of segments or the locules of seed (mukh) [Sanskrit "मुख": face ], and rare or unique beads are highly prized and valuable.
Elaeaocarpaceae is a family of flowering plants. The family contains approximately 615 species of trees and shrubs in 12 genera. The largest genera are Elaeocarpus, with about 350 species, and Sloanea, with about 120.
Elaeocarpus is a genus of tropical and subtropical evergreen trees and shrubs. The approximately 350 species are distributed from Madagascar in the west through India, Southeast Asia, southern China, and Japan, through Australia to New Zealand, Fiji, and Hawaii in the east. The islands of Borneo and New Guinea have the greatest concentration of species. These trees are well-known for their attractive, pearl-like fruit which are often colorful. A notable feature of the family is the drooping, often frilly, small clusters of flowers.
Elaeocarpus ganitrus, is a large evergreen broad-leaved tree whose seed is traditionally used for prayer beads in Hinduism. The seeds are known as rudraksha, or rudraksh, Sanskrit: rudrākṣa. Rudraksha may be produced by several species of Elaeocarpus; however, E. ganitrus is the principal species used in the making of mala.
Elaeocarpus reticulatus, the blueberry ash, is an endemic tree native to Australia, occurring all along the east coast from Fraser Island, Queensland to Flinders Island, Tasmania. Other common names include: ash quandong, blue olive berry, fringe tree, lily of the valley tree, scrub ash, fairy Petticoats, koda, and perhaps even prima donna.

Mount Ciremai National Park is located around 50 km to the south of the city of Cirebon in West Java, Indonesia. The park extends into the Kuningan and Majalengka regencies south of Cirebon. The park surrounds Mt Ceremai, an active volcano, the highest peak in West Java. Groups of hikers, including parties of students, often climb the peak although care is needed.
Elaeocarpus angustifolius is a large and fast growing rainforest tree, native to Australia, in the Elaeocarpaceae family. It is commonly known as Blue Quandong, Blue Marble Tree, Bracelet Tree or Blue Fig, although it is not closely related to the genus of figs.
Elaeocarpus sedentarius, known as the Minyon quandong, is a species of Australian, endangered, mid-sized rainforest trees. In 2008 David J. Maynard and Darren M. Crayn formally scientifically described the species under this name. Previously it had several published informal scientific names and descriptions, the most well known was Elaeocarpus sp. Rocky Creek.
Elaeocarpus bancroftii is a species of plant native to Queensland in Australia. Common names include Kuranda quandong, ebony heart, grey nut, nut tree, nutwood and Johnstone River almond.
As of July 2016, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) lists 238 conservation dependent species. 0.29% of all evaluated species are listed as conservation dependent. The IUCN also lists seven subspecies and five varieties as conservation dependent.
