Willie Brown is an American politician who served as the mayor of San Francisco from 1996 to 2004. Brown also served in the California State Assembly from 1965 to 1995. [1] During his tenure in the Assembly, Brown served as Speaker of the Assembly from 1980 to 1995, which is the longest tenure as Speaker. [2] He was the first African American to serve in the position of both the mayor of San Francisco and Speaker of the California State Assembly. [3] Brown retired from politics after the end of his mayoral term in 2004.
