Elisabeth Schärtel (6 October 1919 – 24 August 2012) was a German operatic mezzo-soprano and contralto. A member of the Cologne Opera from 1959 to 1967, she performed leading parts at major European opera houses and regularly at the Bayreuth Festival.

Career

Born in Weiden in der Oberpfalz, she studied with Anna Bahr-Mildenburg in Munich and with Henny Wolff in Hamburg. She made her debut in 1942 at the Stadttheater Gießen. From 1959 to 1967 she was a member of the Cologne Opera. In 1965, she appeared there as the mother of Stolzius in the premiere of Bernd Alois Zimmermann's Die Soldaten . [1] She performed in opera recordings by the broadcaster Westdeutscher Rundfunk, such as Verdi's Falstaff with Mario Rossi conducting, where she sang Meg Page alongside Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau in the title role. [2]

Schärtel performed at the Bayreuth Festival from 1954 to 1967, singing leading parts in Wagner's music dramas as well as minor parts. In 1954 and 1955 she appeared as Mary in Der fliegende Holländer , in 1958 to 1961 every year as Magdalene in Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg , in 1962 as Erda in Das Rheingold and Ortrud in Lohengrin . She was a guest in European opera houses and at festivals. In 1961 she appeared at the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino as Adelaide in Arabella by Richard Strauss. [1] In 1962 she was a guest at the Hamburg State Opera as the Nurse in Die Frau ohne Schatten by Richard Strauss, staged by Oscar Fritz Schuh and conducted by Wolfgang Sawallisch, alongside Franz Crass and Helga Pilarczyk, among others. [3] In 1966, she appeared as Brangäne in Wagner's Tristan und Isolde at the Vienna State Opera. [4] She performed Magdalene in Lisbon, and Kundry in Wagner's Parsifal at the Deutsche Oper Berlin. [1]

Schärtel was a voice teacher at the Musikhochschule Nürnberg. [1] She died in her home town and was buried on the municipal cemetery on 29 August 2012. [5]

Res Fischer was one of the few true German contraltos of the 1930s and 1940s, and was one of the most powerful singing-actresses of her day, performing internationally. She appeared in first recordings of complete operas, and created roles including the title role of Carl Orff's Antigonae.

Hertha Töpper was an Austrian contralto in opera and concert, and an academic voice teacher. A member of the Bavarian State Opera, she appeared in leading roles at major international opera houses and festivals.

Hannelore Bode is a German operatic soprano. She performed at the Bayreuth Festival from 1968 to 1978, including Elsa in Lohengrin, Eva in Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg, and several parts in the 1976 Jahrhundertring, including Sieglinde in Die Walküre. She performed internationally and recorded operas with conductors such as Eugen Jochum, Silvio Varviso and Pierre Boulez.

Evelyn Herlitzius is a German opera singer, a dramatic soprano. She is known for performing major roles in works by Richard Wagner and Richard Strauss, such as Brünnhilde, Isolde and Elektra, at the Semperoper, the Bayreuth Festival and leading European opera houses.

Ilse Gramatzki is a German operatic mezzo-soprano and contralto who performed at major European opera houses. A member of both the Cologne Opera and the Oper Frankfurt she is known for performing roles by Mozart, contemporary opera and roles by Wagner at the Bayreuth Festival including the Jahrhundertring.

Ruth Hesse is a German dramatic mezzo-soprano. She was a member of the Deutsche Oper Berlin from 1962 to 1995, and appeared internationally, including the Bayreuth Festival and the Salzburg Festival. She appeared regularly at the Vienna State Opera from 1965 to 1988, and was appointed an Austrian Kammersängerin in 1982. In Berlin, she took part in the world premiere of Henze's Der junge Lord.
