Elisapee Sheutiapik is a Canadian politician,who served as mayor of Iqaluit,Nunavut,from 2003 to 2010, [1] and was elected to the Legislative Assembly of Nunavut in the 2017 general election. [2]
She won the mayoral election in 2003,defeating the incumbent mayor John Matthews by 40 votes,and was acclaimed to a second term in 2006.
On 10 September 2008,CBC North reported that Sheutiapik would be taking a leave of absence to run in the Nunavut election. [3] [4] She ran in Iqaluit West,which had the highest voter turnout at 90.2 per cent,but was defeated by incumbent MLA Paul Okalik by 44 votes. [5] [6] [7] She subsequently returned to the mayor's chair.
On 19 October 2009,Sheutiapik won a third term as mayor of Iqaluit. Her opponent was former city councillor Jim Little,who took 42.3% of the vote as opposed to 57.7% for Sheutiapik. [8] On November 9,2010,she announced her resignation as mayor effective December 13. [9] She was succeeded by Madeleine Redfern. [10]
In the 2017 Nunavut territorial election,Sheutiapik again faced off against Okalik in the riding of Iqaluit-Sinaa. This time,she won with 44.8% of the vote,defeating him with 237 votes to 150,as well as two other candidates. [2]
Sheutiapik,whose sister Mary Ann was murdered by an abusive relative in 1997,has collaborated with Iqaluit-based rock singer Lucie Idlout on a national project to have cities across Canada name a city street "Angel" as a memorial to Canadian victims of domestic violence. [11] As of 2014,cities that have named Angel Streets as part of the campaign included St. John's,Edmonton,Regina,Fredericton,Yellowknife and Kamloops. [12]

Paul Okalik is a Canadian politician. He is the first Inuk to have been called to the Nunavut Bar. He was also the first premier of Nunavut.

She was the first Conservative to win the seat,and only the second centre-right candidate ever to win it. Leona Aglukkaq is the first Inuk woman to serve in cabinet. She remained an MP until she was defeated in the 2015 federal election by Liberal candidate Hunter Tootoo. Aglukkaq unsuccessfully contested the 2019 federal election.
Levinia Nuqaalaq Brown is a Canadian Inuk politician who served as the Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) for the electoral district of Rankin Inlet South/Whale Cove in the Legislative Assembly of Nunavut from 2004 to 2008. She was elected as a MLA on February 16,2004,and further elected by other MLAs to serve on the Executive Council of Nunavut. Premier Paul Okalik named her as the Deputy Premier on March 9,2004. She also served as the territory's Minister of Community and Government Services.
The 2008 Nunavut General Election was held on October 27,2008,to return members to the 3rd Legislative Assembly of Nunavut. The election was contested across 15 of Nunavut's 19 electoral districts under the first past the post system of voting. Due to local circumstances,the election was delayed in two districts,and two districts did not hold elections as their incumbent MLAs faced no opposition and were acclaimed back into office.

Lorne Kusugak is a Canadian politician who is the member of the Legislative Assembly of Nunavut for the electoral district of Rankin Inlet South. Prior to becoming an MLA,Kusugak was the mayor of Rankin Inlet. Kusugak served as the Nunavut Minister for Community and Government Services,Minister for Energy and the Minister responsible for the Qulliq Energy Corporation.
Eva Qamaniq Aariaka is a Canadian Inuk politician,who was elected in the 2008 territorial election to represent the electoral district of Iqaluit East in the Legislative Assembly of Nunavut. She was subsequently chosen as the second premier of Nunavut,under the territory's consensus government system,on November 14,2008. Aariak was the fifth woman to serve as a premier in Canada.
Madeleine Redfern is a Canadian Inuit politician,who was elected mayor of Iqaluit,Nunavut in a by-election on 13 December 2010. She was the city's mayor until 2019.

In November 2012 the assembly passed the Nunavut Elections Act 2012,stating that the writs for election drop September 23,2013,and an election be held October 28,2013,the proclamation was registered November 9,2012. At the 2013 forum,held on November 15,2013,Peter Taptuna was selected as the new Premier of Nunavut.
