Elizabeth A. Holm, Richard F. and Eleanor A. Towner Professor of Engineering, is chair of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, University of Michigan. [1] Her research focus is computational materials. She worked at Sandia National Laboratories for 20 years before joining the faculty of Carnegie Mellon in 2012. She is a Fellow of The Minerals, Metals & Materials Society [2] and Fellow of ASM International. She was the 2013 President of the society. [3] She is internationally known for her theory and modeling work on microstructural response, interfaces, carbon nanotubes, and additive manufacturing. [4]

Education

Holm received her Bachelor of Science in Engineering degree in Materials Science and Engineering from the University of Michigan in 1987. She moved to Massachusetts Institute of Technology for a Master of Science in Ceramics in 1989, before returning to the University of Michigan dual Ph.D.s in materials science and engineering and scientific computing in 1992. [5]

Research and career

Holm performs research on microstructural evolution in complex polycrystals employing computational materials science tools. She has bridged length scales from molecular dynamics at the atomic scale to Monte Carlo and phase field methods at the mesoscale to finite element at the continuum scale. Her research areas include theory and modeling of microstructural evolution in complex polycrystals, physical and mechanical response of microstructures, and machine learning to predict rare events. [6] She makes novel use of machine vision and machine learning. [7]

Bhakta B. Rath is an Indian American material physicist and Head of the Materials Science and Component Technology of the United States Naval Research Laboratory (NRL), the corporate research laboratory for the United States Navy and the United States Marine Corps. He is the chief administrative officer for program planning, interdisciplinary coordination, supervision and control of research and is the associate director of research for Materials Science and Component Technology at NRL.

Julia Randall Weertman was an American materials scientist who taught at Northwestern University as the Walter P. Murphy Professor of Materials Science and Engineering.

Margaret Mary Hyland is a Canadian-born chemist based in New Zealand whose research focuses on aluminium technology, and the chemistry and engineering of material surfaces. She moved to New Zealand in 1989 and after holding many senior academic leadership roles supporting and developing research at the faculty, university and national level became recognised as an authority on the generation and capture of fluoride emissions from aluminium smelters and for coordinating the team that produced the 'Fluoride Emissions Management Guide' for the aluminium industry. This achievement was acknowledged when she became the first woman to win the Pickering Medal. In 2017, Hyland was seconded to the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment in the role of Chief Scientist and has held positions in a variety of other groups supporting the physical sciences and engineering. Since 2018 she has been Vice-Provost, (Research) at Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand.

Kevin J. Hemker is the Alonzo G. Decker Chair and Professor of Mechanical Engineering at Johns Hopkins University and holds joint appointments in the Departments of Materials Science & Engineering and Earth & Planetary Sciences. He earned a BS in metallurgy from the University of Cincinnati, MS and PhD degrees in materials science and engineering from Stanford University, and completed a postdoctoral fellowship in physics at the Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne. His doctoral advisor at Stanford was Prof. William Nix. He joined the faculty at Johns Hopkins University in 1993, was an NSF National Young Investigator (1994), an invited Professor at the EPFL (1995) and the University of Paris XIII (2001), and received the ASM Materials Science Research Silver Medal in 2001. He served as Chair of the Department of Mechanical Engineering (2007–2013) and editor of Scripta Materialia (2004–2011). Hemker was a member and Vice-Chair of the DARPA Defense Science Research Council (2010–2014), a member of the SRI Technology Council (2017–2019) and was the 2018 President of The Minerals, Metals, Materials Society (TMS). He is currently a member of the HRL Technical Advisory Group and the NCMS AMMP Advisory Council. Jagdish Narayan is an Indian-born American engineer. Since 2001, he has been the John C. C. Fan Family Distinguished Chair Professor in the Materials Science and Engineering Department at North Carolina State University. He is also the distinguished visiting scientist at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. Narayan has published above 500 high-impact journal articles, with his discoveries covered in over 40 US and international patents. His body of work can be segregated into highly non-equilibrium laser processing of novel nanomaterials, including Q-carbon, Q-BN, diamond and c-BN related materials. These research articles have received over 31,000 Google citations with h-index >85. Narayan and his students discovered Q-carbon asa new allotrope, thereby finding a new route to fabricate diamond and related materials in ambient conditions, resulting in properties and applications ranging from high-temperature superconductivity in boron-doped Q-carbon to hardness than diamond in Q-carbon to enhanced field-emission in Q-carbon to nitrogen-doped nanodiamonds for quantum computing, nanosensing and solid-state devices.

Somnath Ghosh is the Michael G. Callas Chair Professor in the Department of Civil & Systems Engineering and a Professor of Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science & Engineering at Johns Hopkins University (JHU). He is the founding director of the JHU Center for Integrated Structure-Materials Modeling and Simulation (CISMMS) and was the director of an Air Force Center of Excellence in Integrated Materials Modeling (CEIMM).
