Elizaveta (Liza) Levina is a Russian and American mathematical statistician. [1] She is the Vijay Nair Collegiate Professor of Statistics at the University of Michigan, [2] and is known for her work in high-dimensional statistics, including covariance estimation, graphical models, statistical network analysis, and nonparametric statistics. [3]
Levina completed her undergraduate studies in mathematics at Saint Petersburg State University in Russia in 1994. After earning a master's degree in mathematics from the University of Utah in 1997, she completed her PhD in statistics in 2002 from the University of California, Berkeley. [3] Her dissertation, supervised by Peter J. Bickel, was Statistical Issues in Texture Analysis. [4]
Levina joined the faculty of Department of Statistics at University of Michigan after completing her PhD in 2002. [2] She was promoted to associate professor in 2009 [3] and to full professor in 2014. [5] She has been serving as the department's PhD program director since 2012 and also associate chair since 2014. She is also affiliated faculty at the Michigan Institute for Data Science (MIDAS) and the Center for the Study of Complex Systems. [6]
Levina received the American Statistical Association Gottfried E. Noether Young Scholar Award in 2010 for her contributions to nonparametric statistics. [7]
She was elected to the International Statistical Institute in 2011. [1] In 2016, she was elected as a Fellow of the American Statistical Association [8] and as a Fellow of the Institute of Mathematical Statistics (IMS) [9] .
She was awarded the Vijay Nair Collegiate Professorship in 2017. [10]
She was an invited speaker at the 2018 International Congress of Mathematicians, speaking in the section on Probability and Statistics. [11] She has been chosen as a 2019 Medallion Lecturer for the IMS. [12]
Professor Liza Levina is a “Thomson-ISI highly cited” researcher. [13]
She received University of Michigan Distinguished Faculty Achievement Award [14] in 2019. This honor is awarded university-wide to five senior faculty members annually.
Levina's husband, Edward Ionides, is also a professor of statistics at the University of Michigan. [15] [16] They have three children. [17]
Tianwen Tony Cai is a Chinese statistician. He is the Daniel H. Silberberg Professor of Statistics and Vice Dean at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. He is also professor of Applied Math & Computational Science Graduate Group, and associate scholar at the Department of Biostatistics, Epidemiology & Informatics, Perelman School of Medicine, University of Pennsylvania. In 2008 Tony Cai was awarded the COPSS Presidents' Award.

Vijayan (Vijay) N. Nair is currently Head of the Statistical Learning and Advanced Computing Group in Corporate Model Risk at Wells Fargo. He was Donald A. Darling Collegiate Professor of Statistics and Professor of Industrial and Operations Engineering at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor from 1993 to 2017. He served as Chair of the Statistics Department at Michigan from 1998 to 2010. Vijay was instrumental in launching the Michigan Institute for Data Science (MIDAS) and was recognized as a Distinguished Scientist by MIDAS. Prior to joining Michigan, he spent 15 years as a research scientist in the Mathematical Sciences Research Center at Bell Laboratories in New Jersey.
Aurore Delaigle is a Professor and ARC Future Fellow in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at the University of Melbourne, Australia. Her research interests include nonparametric statistics, deconvolution and functional data analysis.
Constance van Eeden was a Dutch mathematical statistician who made "exceptional contributions to the development of statistical sciences in Canada".
