Elk Dale is an extinct town in Atchison County, in the U.S. state of Missouri. The GNIS classifies it as a populated place, but the precise location of the town site is unknown. [1]
Atchison County is the northwestern-most county in the U.S. state of Missouri. As of the 2010 census, the county had a population of 5,685. Its county seat is Rock Port. It was originally known as Allen County when it was detached from Holt County in 1843. The county was officially organized on February 14, 1845 and named for U.S. Senator David Rice Atchison from Missouri.

A post office called Elk Dale was in operation from 1875 until 1900. [2] Elk Dale most likely was named for the elk of Dale Township, in which the community was located. [3]
The elk or wapiti is one of the largest species within the deer family, Cervidae, and one of the largest terrestrial mammals in North America and Northeast Asia. This animal should not be confused with the still larger moose to which the name "elk" applies in British English and in reference to populations in Eurasia.
Dale Township is one of eleven townships in Atchison County, Missouri, United States. As of the 2010 census, its population was 231.
