The Instituto Superior Técnico is the school of engineering and technology of the University of Lisbon. It was founded as an autonomous school in 1911,and was integrated into the Technical University of Lisbon in 1930. IST is the largest school of engineering in Portugal by number of enrolled students,faculty size,scientific production and patents.

The Order of Merit is a Portuguese Honorific Order of civil merit intended to award those responsible for meritorious acts or services performed in the exercise of any functions,both in the public and the private sphere,which reveal self-sacrifice in favor of the community. The decorations are given by the President of the Portuguese Republic,in his role as the Grand-Master of the Portuguese Honorific Orders. The Order of Merit can be awarded,during life or posthumously,to both Portuguese and foreign citizens;it can also be awarded to localities or institutions that are legal persons governed by public law or of public utility. This order has been awarded to a number of people performing the most diverse functions such as ambassadors,businesspeople,military personnel,athletes and musicians.

Claudina Rodrigues-Pousada was a Portuguese researcher in biochemistry. She was a research student at the Gulbenkian Institute of Science until 1973 and at the Institute of Physico-Chemical Biology (IBPC),Paris from 1973 to 1979 and Paris Diderot University. In 1979 she completed her PhD studies and in 1976 was employed by the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation as an adjoint researcher at the Gulbenkian Institute of Science;in 1984 she was a senior researcher until 31 December 1999. In 2000 she moved to the Institute of Technology Chemical Biology as an invited full professor,where she launched the Genomics and Stress laboratory. She worked with yeast to examine how the fungi reacts to environmental stressors,such as Iron,Arsenic,and Nitric oxide,and thus how these stressors regulate cellular homeostasis.
Mário João de Oliveira Ruivo GOSE •GOIH •GCM,known as Mário Ruivo,was a Portuguese scientist and politician,a pioneer in the defense of the ocean and the environment in Portugal. He briefly held ministerial offices in the Portuguese government after the Carnation Revolution,but spend most of his career in senior positions in numerous governmental and non-governmental environmental agencies and scientific organisations.

She was a full professor at the Institute of Chemical and Biological Technology (ITQB) of the NOVA University Lisbon and former president of the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT),the main funding institution for science in Portugal.
