The Embassy of the United States, Stockholm is the diplomatic mission of the United States in Diplomatstaden, Stockholm, Sweden. The diplomatic mission of the United States was established in April 1818 and elevated to an embassy in 1947. [1]
The history of the mission began in 1782 with Benjamin Franklin's appointment as the minister. Franklin served in the role from Paris, and never actually visited Sweden. [2] The next minister, and the first to work from Stockholm, was Jonathan Russell in 1814. Russell was also Ambassador to Norway, which remained a joint position until the Union between Sweden and Norway dissolved in 1905. [3] [4]
The American ambassador's residence was established in 1935. [5] The embassy building was inaugurated in 1955, designed by two American architects; Ralph Rapson and his colleague John Van der Muelen, with Swedish contact architect and collaborator Anders Tengbom. [6] [7] The same pair of architects also designed the Embassy of the United States, Copenhagen. [8] [7]
The embassy has been the subject of numerous demonstrations and barricades, [9] [10] including those related to the September 11 attacks and the Iraq War.
Diplomatstaden is a neighbourhood in the Östermalm district in central Stockholm, Sweden. As the name suggests, the neighbourhood is the home of many embassies and ambassadorial residencies.

Benjamin Franklin and some of the other Founding Fathers were the earliest United States Ambassadors to France. The Maritime Museum in Stockholm, Sweden is a museum for naval history, merchant shipping and shipbuilding. Located in the Gärdet section of the inner-city district Östermalm, the museum offers a panoramic view of the bay Djurgårdsbrunnsviken. The building was designed by architect Ragnar Östberg and built in 1933–36.
Barnhusviken is a body of water in central Stockholm, Sweden. Separating the island Kungsholmen from the mainland district Norrmalm north of it, it connects Karlbergssjön to Klara Sjö.

Sven Fredrik Hedin was a Swedish diplomat. Hedin joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Stockholm as an attaché in 1949 and served the following 40 years in many countries, including as ambassador in Dar es Salaam, Buenos Aires and Rome.
The Embassy of Sweden in Berlin is Sweden's diplomatic mission in Germany. Ambassador since 2017 is Per Thöresson. Sweden established a legation in Berlin in 1912. During World War II, it was destroyed in aerial bombings and the legation was moved to other addresses in Berlin. After the war, the Swedish legation moved to Cologne in West Germany, and in the mid-1950s to Bonn, where it remained until 1999. During the Cold War, Sweden also had an embassy in East Berlin from the 1970s onwards. In 1999, the new Swedish embassy in Berlin was inaugurated and the one in Bonn was closed. The building complex in which the Swedish embassy is located since 1999 is called Nordic Embassies.

The Embassy of Sweden in Algiers is Sweden's diplomatic mission in Algeria. The first Swedish ambassador was accredited to Algiers in 1963. The ambassador since 2021 is Björn Häggmark.
The Embassy of Sweden in Canberra is Sweden's diplomatic mission in Australia. The embassy opened in 1947 and has been located in Canberra since 1951. The ambassador since 2022 is Pontus Melander.
The Embassy of Sweden in Beijing is Sweden's diplomatic mission in China. The embassy's task is to represent Sweden, the Swedish government in China and to promote Swedish interests. Trade promotion and development cooperation are other tasks for the embassy, as well as press and culture issues and migration and consular services. The embassy's sphere of responsibility includes Mongolia. The ambassador has a dual accreditation to Ulaanbaatar.
