Entumeni Forest Nature Reserve is a 750-hectare (1,900-acre) nature reserve located near Eshowe in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. Managed by Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife, the reserve preserves a significant patch of Mistbelt Scarp Forest, characterized by steep-sided gorges and a high-canopy forest floor. [1]
The reserve is situated approximately 15 km (9.3 mi) west of Eshowe. It lies at an altitude of roughly 600 to 800 meters above sea level, resulting in a cooler, mistier climate compared to the nearby coastal plains. [2] The terrain is rugged, featuring deep valleys and the headwaters of the Amatikulu River. [3]
The name "Entumeni" is derived from the Zulu word isiTumeni, referring to the "Bitter Apple" (Solanum aculeastrum), which grows in the area. [4] The forest was formally proclaimed as a nature reserve in 1970 to protect it from the expanding timber and sugar cane plantations in the surrounding district. [1]
Entumeni is renowned for its high levels of endemism and its "primeval" forest atmosphere.
The forest is dominated by massive Outeniqua Yellowwoods, Cape Chestnuts, and Flat-crown trees. The forest floor is rich in ferns and mosses due to the consistent mist and high rainfall. [1]
Entumeni offers a quiet, wilderness-oriented experience with limited development:
