Eric Holtz (born December 5,1965) is an American former manager of the Israel national baseball team. [1] He was the assistant coach of gold-medal-winning Team USA in baseball at the 2013 Maccabiah Games,and the Team USA head coach for the gold-medal-winning Under-18 baseball team at the 2017 Maccabiah Games. He was the head coach of the 1st and Only Olympic Baseball team to represent Israel.
Holtz was born in New York,New York,and raised in the Bronx,New York. [2] [1] He is Jewish,and had his bar mitzvah at the Western Wall. [1] His father fought in World War II. [3]
Holtz founded and is the owner of Game On 13,a baseball and softball strength and sports conditioning and skills development training facility in Elmsford in Westchester County in New York State. [4] [5] [6]
His wife is Traci Holtz,and they have three children. [7]
He attended Dean College,where Holtz played baseball for two years. [8] He played third base and pitcher for the Bet Shemesh Blue Sox of the Israel Baseball League as a player-coach in 2007,during which time he roomed with player Nate Fish. He was an assistant baseball coach at Manhattanville College from 2004 to 2007,and then the hitting coach at Westchester Community College from 2008 to 2015. [1] [9]
Holtz was the assistant coach of gold-medal-winning Team USA in baseball at the 2013 Maccabiah Games. [1] [9] He was then the Team USA head coach for the gold-medal-winning Under-18 baseball team at the 2017 Maccabiah Games. [1]
He was named the baseball head coach of the Israel national baseball team in 2017. [1] [14] The Israel Association of Baseball named Holtz as the manager for the 2020 Olympic Qualifiers. [1] [14]
The team played in the 2019 European Baseball Championship - B-Pool in early July 2019 in Blagoevgrad,Bulgaria,winning all five of its games and advancing to the playoffs against Team Lithuania in the 2019 Playoff Series at the end of July 2019 for the last qualifying spot for the 2019 European Baseball Championship. In September 2019,he managed Team Israel to a fourth-place finish at the 2019 European Baseball Championship in Germany. Among the teams Team Israel defeated was Team Germany. Holtz noted:"Going to Germany,a country that we wouldn’t have been allowed in 80 years ago,and not only to go there but perform there and defeat them on their own land,yeah,it was a little bit more (meaningful) once the game was over." [3] He also managed the team at the Africa/Europe 2020 Olympic Qualification tournament in Italy in September 2019,which Israel won to qualify to play baseball at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo. Sport in Israel plays an important role in Israeli culture and is supported by the Ministry of Culture and Sport. The 6th Maccabiah Games were held in Tel Aviv,Israel in 1961,with 1,100 athletes from 27 countries competing in 18 sports. The Games were officially opened in an Opening Ceremony on August 29,1961,in Ramat Gan Stadium by Israeli President Yitzhak Ben-Zvi before a crowd of 30,000. The closing ceremony took place on September 5,1961,at the stadium before a crowd of 40,000,with Israeli Prime Minister David Ben Gurion telling the crowd that he hoped that in the future athletes from North Africa,Poland,Hungary,Czechoslovakia,and the Soviet Union would also compete. The United States won 58 gold medals,Israel won 28 gold medals,and South Africa was third with 11 gold medals. American sportscaster Mel Allen narrated a film about the 1961 Games.
At the 10th Maccabiah Games in Israel,more than 2,800 athletes from 34 countries participated in 26 different sports,including chess and bridge and for the first time badminton.
Twenty-one countries sent 980 athletes to compete in the 1957 5th Maccabiah Games,an international Jewish athletics competition similar to the Olympics. The opening ceremony on September 15,1957,was held in Ramat Gan Stadium,with athletes parading before Israeli President Yitzhak Ben Zvi.
The 11th Maccabiah Games brought 3,450 athletes to Israel from 35 nations. The Opening Ceremony was held on July 7,1981,before a crowd of 53,000 and Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin in Ramat Gan Stadium,with 3,500 Jewish athletes parading past him. Representative Jack Kemp and a supporter of Israel,marched with the United States team. Israel won the most medals (199),with 65 gold. The United States won 188 medals,85 gold. South Africa,Britain,and Canada had the next-most total medals.
At the 8th Maccabiah Games from July 29 to August 7,1969,1,450 athletes from 27 countries competed in 22 sports in Israel. The final gold medal count was the United States in first place (64),Israel second,and Great Britain third (11).
The 12th Maccabiah Games brought over 4,000 athletes to Israel from 38 nations to compete in 28 sports.
The 15th Maccabiah Games are remembered for being marred by a bridge collapse that killed several participants.
In Israel,there are approximately 1,000 baseball players in 16 cities across the country. Volunteer coaches and donors are instrumental to the growth and development of the sport,as baseball resources are very low. The Israel Association of Baseball (IAB) is the governing body of the sport. As of the end of 2023,Israel was ranked 19th in the world in the sport. The country was one of six nations to qualify for baseball at the 2020 Summer Olympics,finishing fifth in the tournament.
The 18th Maccabiah Games,were held in July 2009. According to the organizing committee these were the largest games held yet. These Games were the world's fifth-largest sporting event,behind the Olympic Games,Commonwealth Games,World Police and Fire Games,and Universiade. On the 13 July,more than 6,000 Jewish athletes from all over the world joined Team Israel's 3,000 participants at the Ramat Gan Stadium in Tel Aviv District,Israel,for the opening ceremony. American swimmer Jason Lezak was given the honor of lighting the Maccabiah torch at the Opening Ceremony.

The 2017 Maccabiah Games,also referred to as the 20th Maccabiah Games,were the 20th edition of the Maccabiah Games. They took place from 4 to 17 July 2017,in Israel. The Maccabiah Games are open to Jewish athletes from around the world,and to all Israeli citizens regardless of their religion. A total of 10,000 athletes competed,a Maccabiah Games record,making the 2017 Maccabiah Games the third-largest sporting competition in the world. The athletes were from 85 countries,also a record. Countries represented for the first time included the Bahamas,Barbados,Cambodia,the Cayman Islands,Haiti,Malta,Morocco,the Philippines,Singapore,South Korea,and Trinidad. The athletes competed in 45 sports.
Stuart Krohn is an American former professional rugby union player. At the University of California,Santa Barbara,he was an All-American in 1986. In Hong Kong,he played for Valley RFC for eight years,as the team won eight consecutive championships,and captained the international team at the 1993 Rugby World Cup Sevens and the 1997 Rugby World Cup Sevens. Krohn was a member of the silver medal winning USA Men's Rugby Team at the 1993 Maccabiah Games in Israel,and a member of the gold medal winning team at the 1997 Maccabiah Games.
Jordan Chait is a South African rugby union player and vice captain for the Tel Aviv Heat in the Rugby Europe Super Cup. He also plays for the Seattle Seawolves in Major League Rugby (MLR) in the U.S. His regular position is fly-half.
